Been hunting since opening day of KY bow season. I have a trail camera with 2,300 photos of some small bucks, a ton of does and yearlings, and coons. This guy showed up last week. I have practiced patience all season: holding out for something big to shoot with my new Excalibur Exocet. I hope I am presented with a good shot on this ole guy. Looks like maybe an 18 inch spread, big 8 pointer, maybe 12 inch G2's. I am going to hunt as much as I can before modern rifle starts in a few weeks, hoping to tag him before someone else does. I haven't shot a big rack buck in a few years. Wish me luck fellas. I hope I can get him.

Re: COMP-N-CHOKE Results round 2 [ QUOTE ] Funny how it differs from gun to gun. The flite control wads #5 shot(#6 shot FC finished 2nd) shoot better than 11 other shells that I've shot through my comp n choke stoeger 2000 combo. The HV loads do not shoot well at all. The Win. Ext #6 finished third. You've got to get to the pattern board to see what it likes. I'm glad you found what works well in your setup. [/ QUOTE ] I guess that clearly explains how to two guns are alike.

Re: COMP-N-CHOKE Results round 2 [ QUOTE ] Ok guys and gals here is the deal. It seems I may be happy after all. Here are my results: 4)Federal flight control ammo will not shoot well with the ultimag choke or the c-n-c [/ QUOTE ] The Comp-N-Choke is designed with slats cut into the choke to actually slow down the wad. This is the whole deal with a cnc. It kinda grabs the wad and lets the pellets leave the wad quicker. The Flight Control wad is designed to stay in tact with the pellets as long as it can. Hence, you hear of people seeing the wad hit a turkeys head or neck, or like my buddy and myself, witnessed the wad actually stick into a 2x4 stud downrange. I have a Comp-N-Choke and tried the same with Federal FC's. Crappy results. Comp-N-Chokes are better with Winchester HV's or Remingtons. Federal Flight Controls do better with extended chokes that don't have dramatic cuts in them. Federal FC's actually shot better with my Remington factory super full turkey choke which doesn't have any slats or holes in it, it is only extended.

Re: 2nd KY gobbler: tagged out [ QUOTE ] Congrats on another nice bird. Just because you're tagged out now doesn't mean you can't get back out there. Tag along as the guide now for a young hunter or a second caller for a friend. [/ QUOTE ] Well, that is what I did the rest of the day after I shot him in the morning. I took today off turkey hunting and work just to chill out for a bit. 3 straight days of chasing gobblers wore me out. I will be heading back this weekend to call for my friend and hopefully help him bag a nice gobbler.

Re: 2nd KY gobbler: tagged out thanks fellas. If I had to choose only one type of hunting, it would most definetly be turkey hunting. For those who don't turkey hunt.....I say, Thanks with a deep appreciation for leaving a few more turkeys in the spring woods for people to hunt.

I have been hunting for a few years with a good college friend. But, I haven't been able to tag a turkey with him until this year, 3 days into the 2006 season. We were able to get to this bird on the roost. He flew down but seemed to be going away from us, (with hens we thought). He wouldn't respond much to hen calls so we shocked him to find out where he was heading to. My friend knew the lay of the land and we setup an ambush with some light yelping. Sure enough, we saw him at the edge of a field coming our way. So, we just waited 'till he got within range. He strutted a few times then I decided it was time to take the shot. But, I missed and had to shoot as he started to run away. My friend was highly impressed with the speed of my followup shot and the instantaneous pumping of my shotgun. Another notch on the stock of my 870. Excited would be an understatement. We were on cloud nine and I had tagged out within 3 days of the 2006 season. 24 lbs. 1 1/4 inch and 1 1/8 inch spurs 10 3/4 inch beard Here is my wingman

Take me back to Poosey, Poosey Ridge that is: a mountain ridge that runs directly into the Kentucky river. Last year I was able to kill my biggest gobbler at 25lbs. in the evening at Poosey. This year, the day before season opener, I watched two gobblers chase a hen right past the tree that held my back just 12 months ago. I made a mental note, and constructed a plan to harvest another gobbler from that area. This morning my unlce and I sat up on a known roosted gobbler only to find out that his hens was way more important that the ever seducing calling from my unlce. So, after two hours of frustration, we decided to goto the spot where we saw the other two gobblers. Sure enough, as soon as we arived, we heard them gobble. So, we grabbed their attention with some yelps and set out three decoys just over the ridge in a nice grassy area. Through the trees, we could see two gobblers work their way down the hill towards the bottom gobbling every time my uncle hit his call. With 45 minutes, two gobblers peeked their heads out from the timber to pin point that ole hen they had been hearing. A few more steps and my 870 was sending #4 shot down the hill towards the larger of the two. My unlce shot as soon as he heard me shoot, but he missed. Mine feel at 30 yards and the other gobbler set sail back to the ridge where he came from. I wish we could have had our double, but then again, at least one of us was able to get one of the longbeards. Kudos to unlces superb seductive calling, he made it possible for me to take a nice longbeard on KY opening day. This bird was killed very close to where I killed my biggest gobbler last year. It almost had the exact beard. So, we decided to take the photo on the rock where I took my photo last year. We coined it, "Longbeard Rock". Hopefully many more gobblers will graciously lay their beard over the rock as we snap another photo of time not wasted at Poosey. 22 lbs. 3/4 inch spurs 10 3/4 inch beard

Re: CottonTop: The Centennial Bird .......A complete masterpiece. It is always a joy to read your stories. I wonder what it would be like to be a mosquito resting on your ear wittnessing this whole event. I know I would survive, 'cuase there is no way you would smack a skeeter when ole CottonTop was in line with your beads. Congrats dude.

Re: Encore or Omega ? I'll chime in. I have owned four muzzleloaders: CVA $99 POS, a Remi 700MLS okay, a terribly maintained TC Hawkin, and my last and keeper....OMEGA! I shoot a Stainless Flutted Thumbhole Omega .50 cal. I absolutley love this muzzleloader. I topped it with a Leupold VX-II 3-4X40 and TC Maxima rings and base. The ML really shoots great with 250 gr. TC Shockwaves and 2 50gr. 777 pellets. Grouped cutting bullets holes at 100 yards. Clean up is a breeze. I already have deer rifles, so the Encore wasn't an option. Also, I think an Encore is kinda awkward to hold. I know there are some Encore lovers that will flame me on that (including my brother). But, I just didn't like the feel of an Encore. Maybe with a thumbhole stock!!! The Omega is beginning to be a solid name in the muzzleloading community. For me, the Omega is the "end" of finding a good muzzleloader. First deer with my Omega was a nice 7 point at 100 yards. Noting between us but clean KY air! The Omega performed with ease!

I am thinking about going to Florida to turkey hunt this Spring. I have only hunted in KY, so I really don't have a clue about the outfitters in Florida. Anyone hunted in Florida, know any good outfitters. Thanks.

Re: What yardage did you kill your bird at this year 30 yards for mine. I called one in for a friend; he rolled him at 50 yards.

Re: Going to Florida in \'06: recommened outfitters??? That's nice to know RedBeard. No way I could do it in one year. Hard enough getting KY's two bird limit in 3 weeks!!!! -
I am going to get a start on my grand slam. I don't think I could do it in one season, so I guess it would be a career grand slam since it would take me some years. I am thinking about going to Florida to start my out of state hunting. What are some good guide services and outfitters in Florida to hunt some Osceolas?

The never ending story of a Spring Turkey hunt...
KYLimbHanger replied to KYLimbHanger's topic in Turkey Hunting
Re: The never ending story of a Spring Turkey hunt... ******************************************************** This was supposed to be a 5 word story, not 20 words. Making complete sentences takes the fun out of it. Reading how people take others ideas and create their own is what this is all about. Try to keep it at 5 words. Never thought it would reach 1000 views though. ******************************************************** -
Re: Kentucky hunting video [ QUOTE ] Nice gobbler and great footage! Looks like the videographer wasn't expecting the shot! [/ QUOTE ] Yep. My friend wanted to film a hunt real bad. He's a rookie hunting videographer. Had his hand on the camera and was getting ready to zoom in while our friend shot. He was bout 15 yards behind us and had no idea when we was gonna shoot. Spooked him a little.

Here is a video of a hunt on 4/16/05 where my hunting partner and I brought another hunter to get his first bird of the season. I called while my other partner filmed and our friend took a nice gobbler. 'Bout a 4 minute video. Got him before sunrise. He came in great, by himself. He shot him at 50 yards with a Benelli Nova and Federal FC 3.5 #5. We had our Renzo dekes and a full mounted strutting gobbler. You'll see them at the end of the film. http://www.kyoutdoors.com/video/Spring2005GobblerKill.htm
