Well.. this past weekend was the last weekend of rifle season here in NY. Late Archery/Muzzleloading opens up tomorrow. I had an unfilled doe tag for the WMU where our property is upstate. It took me 3 years of being denied for that area to get this tag so needless to say, I was not letting this tag go unfilled. I sat on stand Saturday morning in the box blind hoping to find a doe and I had no such luck. I sat til about 8:00am then called it a morning on a count of frozen toes. We planned on doing some drives with the guys this weekend but most everyone tagged out on bucks the first week of the season so no one was really out hunting this late. My dad and I spoke to a farmer and asked him if we could drive this one particular patch of woods he had permission to hunt on and he said sure. We have done this drive in years past and it always held does so our expectations were high. My dad dropped me off on one end of the woodlot and then he drove and parked the truck at the other end. He called me when he was about to start and I told him to go ahead as I was in position and ready. I set myself up on the main trail in the woods because I had a stream about 30 yards to my left with blowdowns alongside the bank and a field 30 yards to my right. I knew the deer wouldn't cross the stream, it was too deep and I knew they wouldn't expose themselves in the open field so they were gonna come head on at me on the trail. So at 11:01am my dad called me and told me he was starting. Around 11:12 I catch movement off to the left and get my gun up. Then I see it was 2 does. The first doe came down the trail and hit the brakes as soon as she saw me. I picked my gun up and layed the crosshairs on her chest and pulled the trigger. POW!! She went down like a ton of bricks on the spot. The second doe just stared at her and doubled back the way they came after not figuring out what happened. I called my dad up to let him know we had some more meat down. She was a huge doe!!! When we weighed her, she weighed 140lb dressed!!! She also had a really thick fat layer on her.. See the pics.. Anyway.. here's the pics: Check her size out in comparison to me: Fat layer: Check out her hooves.. They were white and spongy on the bottom of them. All we could make of it is that she was a swamp doe. You know, kinda like how you sit in the bathtub too long, your fingers get all wrinkly and spongy, her hooves remained soft as she was in the swamp most of her life: She barely even fit in the bed of the truck!! We drove on the highway the whole way home with her hooves sticking up out of the bed like this: And here's the slug hole from the Brenneke slug out of my Mossberg 500 20ga. There was no exit on her either and no recovery of the slug:

I'm shooting Goldtip XT Hunter 55/75's. -
Just to add on to what Texan is saying there... Oftentimes, the 2nd Amendment is questioned in todays society as to whether or not it is necessary and the liberal arguement is most always that it was different times when the Constitution was written and that our forefathers didn't think of or even imagine semi automatic or automatic firearms. My rebuttal to that comment is, then the internet shouldn't be included under free speech, right? I mean, surely our forefathers didn't think of the internet at the time. It was different times. Laws need to chance and adopt with the times and new technology. It really is insane how the Second Amendment is the only one that is questioned on so many levels when it is the ONLY Amendment that makes all others possible.

Not to throw this thread off track, but what blows my mind is that in certain areas of the nation, we have to have an issued document stating that we are allowed to own firearms, when the only document that should be neccesary was written well over 200 years ago.

I shoot Goldtip XT Hunter 55/75's.. total weight is 354gr. That's including a 100gr tip, nock, insert & 3 blazers. This arrow off my DXT at 27"/70lb blows through shoulders and ribs of deer with a Slick Trick BH with no problem whatsoever.

Kyle? Kyle who? Welcome back lol

IMO, I see no reason why we shouldn't use it in our posts. That's JMHO though.

Hey thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!!!

Those pictures are amazing!!! Makes me wanna jump in a treestand there with my bow in hand!! I love red snow!!

I'll be sticking with my DXT.

I bought the MAD Buck Growl last year at the end of deer season. This is my first year testing it out and I just don't think that it's loud enough in the woods. The growl and grunt just aren't as loud as my old grunt call.

I live in Rockland County, but my family owns property in Sullivan County. That's where I shot this deer. -
Chris.. I'm a senior. I graduate in June 2009. I'm really confused with this whole situation. I guess it may be time to sit down with my guidance counselor and really talk this whole thing out discuss my options.

Well.. I'm a little late I admit on filling these things out, but man this is so boring. I'm looking into a bunch of different colleges some SUNY schools here in NY, others community colleges here in NY. Nothing out of state, unless someone here has suggestions for my intended major & minor?? I'm pretty sure I want to do something with law enforcement and environmental law. So I considered working for NYS DEC as Environmental Conservation Officer. But now here's the thing, should I do 2 years at a community college majoring in Criminal Justice, get my bachellors then transfer to a 4 year school with a major in Biology or Wildlife Biology? Or should I just go to the 4 year school right from the getgo and major in one and minor in the other? I'm not sure which needs to be the major and which needs to be the minor. This is all so confusing and frustrating. Any help or input is appreciated. Thanks.. Joe

This is a very unfortunate event that occurred on Sunday in Sullivan County, NY. The town of Swan Lake, is only like a 10 or 15 minute ride from the town where my family's property is, so this is basically a local incident. This article was on the front page of the paper up there according to my dad. http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081117/NEWS/81117013 According to the news report on tv that I just watched, the man is being held in the county jail on charges of second degree manslaughter. NYS Law states that you must be 500ft away from an inhabited building or structure without written permission from the landowner, and I really doubt he had permission from the owner of the trailer park. My prayers go out to the little girls family. What are your thoughts on this?

Well.. I managed to knock down a spike Saturday morning. I'll have the pics posted for the contest soon. Story & pics are posted in the Deer Hunting Room. -
I hunted up at the property this past weekend with my brother and dad. We were out to get my brother his first deer and possibly get me my first gun deer. Despite the rainy and warm opener we had throughout most of Southern NY, we were out there and the deer were moving!! My brother and dad were covered in does all morning, but no bucks. My brother didn't have a doe tag so he had to wait for a buck. My dad had a doe tag but he was trying to get my brother to shoot before he shoots one. My bro was texting me telling me about the does he had in front of him. I didn't see a deer until 8:38am. I sat alone in a 2 man ladder stand on the far end of the property and the only deer I had come in was a lone spike. Because the woods were wet he snuck up on me from behind and I didn't see him til he was 50 yards to my right. There was maybe 7-10 seconds total between when I saw the deer and when I shot it. My Mossberg 500 20ga with the slug barrel shooting Brenneke slugs dropped him on the spot. He required a follow up shot as he was still alive on the ground. I shot him in the neck from the stand again. Turns out in the heat of the moment I forgot the ballistics of the slug. It's 1.5" high at 50 yards and because I aimed for the center of the lungs, that 1.5" high put my first shot right in the spine. He's not a huge buck but he's my first deer with the gun and obviously my first gun buck. I had 10 days from opening day Nov. 15th to shoot a buck smaller than the 3 point antler restrictions up there. Hunters under 17 years old are exempt from these restrictions so I took advantage of my late birthday (Nov 25th). Anyway.. sorry to ramble, but I had a great weekend and wanted to share. Also.. this buck did have a slight limp to him while he was walking, turns out that his front right hoof was busted and healed over. See pics below..

Well.. right after my brother gets home from school, him, my dad and I will be on our way to the house upstate for the weekend. Gun season opens up tomorrow. I plan on sitting sunrise to sunset. I'll just make sure I pack it some sandwiches, water and snacks. Like I mentioned earlier, I have a buck tag and a doe tag so if it's brown it's down. I think I'm gonna sit in the 2 man ladder stand we have, but I'll be alone, nice and comfortable plus isolated on the property. Forecast says rain for tonight and Saturday but then windy and clear on Sunday. But then of course snow on Sunday night. I have to go home Sunday night because of school on Monday. Isn't that just great? -

Well team.. the hunting where I do alot of my bowhunting has been horrible this year. I have been very fortunate to have harvested that button buck and that doe. I've only had 2 deer within range this year and they're both dead. But, our gun season opens up Saturday morning and I'll be at our property upstate looking to shoot my first gun deer. I have a buck and a doe tag for up there, plus I'm exempt from the 3 point antler restrictions til I turn 17 (Nov 25th). So I basically have one weekend where if it's brown it's down. I'll still be bowhunting during the week at the spot behind my house where I live in Rockland, but on weekends I'll be up at the property in Sullivan County. -
Price dropped 20 cents in 2 days!! Paying $2.429 per gallon here now.
