Finally, my Mexico buck is back from the taxidermist. It took a year and a half, but I am very pleased.

I figured the guy was stretching the truth a bit. Seems like he would have his facts in line before blurtin it out on national TV . I agree the Ferguson cartridges are some pretty hot rounds, but they need to do some serious research before making claims.

Stag produces right and left models, and a new varmiter for under a thousand bucks that shoots 1/2in groups. You may be right about Bushmaster and Remington , rather than DPMS. I like the DPMS and Stag alot better than the Bushmaster, they seem to have a better finish job.

I recently watched a hunting show and the host was shooting a custom rifle ( Ferguson Rifles ) that he claimed to sight in at 2 /12 inches high at 100yds and that allowed him to hold dead on out to 500yds. I went to the rifle makers sight and he has two custom rifle models in two calibers that he claims will allow the hunter to shoot out to 500 yds with no hold over. I know of no bullet out there except maybe a .50 cal that will do this. His two calibers were a 7 STW necked down to .257 , and a .300-.338. He gives no ballastic data chart, just his word that a 2 1/2 inch high at 100yd sight in will give you a 500 yd rifle with no hold over. Sounds like a bunch of bull to me.

The Remington and DPMS are basically the same rifle, they are both owned by the same company, the Rem might even be manufactured at the DPMS factory. Stag arms has a well built rifle that shoots 1/2 groups for alot less money, check them out.

5.56MM not getting it done in war on Terror
TexasDeerHunter replied to Adjam5's topic in Rifles & Accessories
I have heard the same thing about the 5.56 from alot of old timers, but have not found any documented evidence of the truth behind it. The documented explanation was the 5.56 allowed more ammo to be carried and was lighter weight, it was also proven to be very effective on humans. I know of several guys who served and had no complaints about about the .223/5.56 , in fact one of them is a special operations guy for DPS and his choice is a Colt M4 in .223. There is definately no flies on a .308, I wonder hom much truth there is to this report of troops wanting something bigger. -
I have never owned one , but have heard from some well informed sources that you don't want to trust your life on one.

Congrats Tom. Well I finally got a chance to hunt and scored on a bird. He's not a huge one but I was'nt sure if I would get another chance to go so I took him to get some points on the board. -
What causes a faster, more humane kill?
TexasDeerHunter replied to Randy's topic in Rifles & Accessories
Those animals that flipped did not do so because of bullet impact, it is the shock to the nervous system that causes that. I have seen this demonstrated first hand , also several gun writers with far more experience than you and I have proven and written about the same thing. Heck, even Myth Busters proved it. A modern big game rifle of any caliber will not flip or knoch over deer sized game due to the impact of the bullet. Despite what you may beleive, this has been proven by ballistic experts. I will say that the more energy you deliver to the target the greater chance of nervous system shock that can and will make an animal jump, flip, tumble, hop , skip and etc.... -
Glad to hear the victim is doing well. IMO any type of gang related activity should be zero tolerance and a minimum of 5 years in jail. These gangs are nothing but trouble and cause too many innocent people to get hurt or killed. Also, I think the girl in this case should face attempted murder charges period. This kind of behavior is crazy and any prosecutor or court system that wants to just give a slap on the wrist is underminning out judicial system and jepordizing our safety.

Yep I know, but this knife was intended to be a tool and I will definately use it. Randall offers a few tips on how to preserve the finish. It's amazing how the value of Randall's have went up in the last few years.

Yeah, I am chompin at the bits to get some blood on that blade. Hoping to maybe score on a summer axis hunt and get it broke in good.

What he did is wrong, but I think there are different degrees of poaching. I have a bigger problem with him trying to earn prizes or fame by entering an illegal deer in a contest. I would come down harder on him for the false document charges opposed to the hunting with no license. Here in Texas we have alot of contest and they will flat throw you under the jail for falsifying documents in a contest as well as a big fat fine and maybe jail for hunting illegally.

I have had my sights set on getting a Randall knife for hunting, but my budget just would not allow it anytime soon. Well, a good friend of mine decided he wanted me to have one so he purchased this Model 27 and presented it to me as a gift. What a friend!

Yes, I understand all that. Just wanting to know specifically if there is any advantage in the AR's with 16in barrels. I have one guy who swears by Colt and 1:7 only, but I am thinking that for a defense/truck gun/ shoot a few deer here and there that it really won't matter much.

In looking at AR rifles with 16in barrels chambered in .223, what rate of twist ( 1: 9, or 1:7 ) works best and why?

The high shoulder shot does not have to break the spine, there are alot of nerve endings in this area and the shock delivered by the bullets impact will cause the nervous system to fail and drop the animal. Look at a video called "Beyond Belief" by John Burns. He has mastered the art of long range shooting and one shot drops. This is the only shot he takes and drops elk out past 700 yards. It is a great video. I know the feeling oh so well when you have nightmares about a big ol buck that you wounded and he got away. I made a bad shot on a deer a few years ago in Kansas, a brisket shot that dropped him. I was busy celebrating and high fiving my buddy when the big boy gets up and runs off . I actually think the would was non fatal. -

How bout "Knock Down Power" , there is no such thing when it comes to hunting large animals. An impact from any bullet will not knock down deer sized game. Smaller animals, maybe. I saw this explained very well in a class years ago. A guy who invented a type of body armor demonstrated on himself. He stood on one leg with his body armor on and placed a phone book as a cushion between him and the vest to keep from brusing himself. His buddy shot him in the chest at 25yds with a .308 and again with a .44 mag. He never lost balance . The theory is that for a bullet to exert enough energy to knock down a 200 pound animal then it would knock down the 200 pound guy shooting the gun. The reason an animal falls , flips, tumbles , rolls, collapses is due to a direct shock to the central nervous system. I think a well placed bullet is the best way to drop animals. I have seen big animals drop from a .223 and the same size animal run a mile after three hits from a .300 mag. I would suggest the high shoulder shot to drop a deer or elk in their tracks, it shocks the nervous system and causes the deer to drop and become immobilized. Anyway, thats my two cents. -
I have hunted a couple of high fences and can tell you that there are places here in Texas that are fenced and you can drive all day and not see a deer. There are others where the deer run out at the sound of a feeder. To each his own as long as it's legal. Personally I prefer not to hunt in a fence, but would not turn it down if the circumstances were right.

Check out the CZ line of shotguns , they are well built and a little more affordable .

I use an over/under Beretta Silver Pigeon in 28ga of all things. Barrell length is not important, the choke, shot size, and knowing your gun's pattern are the key. Most knowlegable shotgunners will tell you that barrell length has no effect on the pattern or range of a shotgun, the only thing that controls that is the choke and shot size, and of course the powder charge. Longer guns simple balance better and allow for greater pointability which helps you shoot better.

I think some like Waddell actually worked their way up. However, I think alot of personalities we see on hunting shows today either have alot of money or friends that do. Some of these guys do not appear to be very well educated on hunting , but somehow they had enough coin to a get a show on air.

I think that is a bit much, I have been a member for a few years and participate in the deer contest. I have only about 800 posts or so, the fact is that we are gonna have people do this reguardless. I think maybee a check in time of three weeks after teams are posted and maybee periodocally. But then again, I am a ghost around here come hunting season because i am away hunting so much. I don't know the answer, but I think 2000 posts is a bit much.

You can pour a top coating of concrete on the garage to raise the level. I would also recommend having someone look at your lot drainage to ensure proper run off.
