Re: Need help with POACHERS!!!! Do you have any friends in the area where you own the land? My uncle has land that is three hours from where he lives and he has one of his friends that lives in the town watch it. If not maybe a caretaker would be a good idea. You might find someone that would trade watching over your property for the time you are not there for the rights to have just that one person hunt along with you. I am not sure if you want that but that would give the person some sort of attatchment to the property and the poachers would be hunting their deer also so they would want to catch them and have them arrested. There is a guy around here that has 2000 acres and he lets a guy who lives on the border of his property hunt to watch over his land and all the locals know that and stay away. Just a thought, hope you get them.

Re: \"Past the Ears\" Antler Restriction [ QUOTE ] I don't like it either. Makes it too difficult to assess a deer in a short time. Minimum points rule on at least one side makes a whole lot more sense. A minimum spread rule might be fine and dandy for a private hunting club, but not reasonable for the general public, IMO. [/ QUOTE ] I agree with buckee.

Re: SAD DAY IN NORTHERN NEW YORK Yeah it is time to put the riffle away for this year, but at least there is one more week of muzzleloader here in northern NY.

Re: My 05 whitetail story... What a nice deer, it sounds like one of those stories that you may never forget. These big deer always seem to run into the really thick stuff when they get hurt. I guess that is how they end up that big to begin with. It is great you found it congrats!!

Re: Harvest Reporting I report every deer I take, it is critical in getting a correct count of the deer harvested. It is to bad that everyone else can not do the same thing, it only takes a few minutes, alot less time that it takes to actually get the deer!!!

Re: New York State antler restrictions??? Doc, I am not one of those people that has been clouded by TV. I have actually seen this program work. When I said that doe permits should be handed out to meat hunters I did not mean that the state should hand out tags without researching each zone, better than they do now!! But the problem with some New York hunters is they do not bother to report their deer harvest which makes the information colleceted incorect. Research is the key not only if AR's were implemented but it is key now. Our age structure and buck to doe ratio is out of wack in New York state. When you shoot 85 to 90 percent of yearling bucks you take out many of the breeding bucks the way the system is set up now. Before we did QDM on our property you saw many does walking around without fawns which means they did not get bred. Now that we have been managing our property almost every doe we see has two to three fawns, which means every doe is getting bred and the deer heard is getting healthier. We all know that NY state is doing some research with three areas, and it will be interesting to see what they find out.

Re: QDM I think that some people have forgetten what QDM actually is. It is not just about getting that buck of a lifetime, it is more creating a healthier deer heard by taking more does and getting the numbers down to create a healthier environment for the deer to live in. Taking bigger and more mature bucks is just a step at creating a deer heard with an older age structure. I truly believe it works and do not try to offend anyone who shoots a younger buck but I am just presonaly very passionate about this topic. Here in New York we have not had a bad winter in quite a few years, but because our deer numbers are up if we do have a harsh winter many of our deer are going to die because of lack of food. QDM is a method to try to get the numbers to a managable size so that there would not be as many deer killed due to lack of food and they could be healthier to survive conditions like that.

Re: QDM I do and the benifits are great, I enjoy deer hunting a lot more now!!! I see a lot more mature bucks and we are working on getting a better buck to doe ratio.

Re: NY bucks....where are they? In my opinion with the popularity of muzzelloading and bow hunting there is a lot more pressure in the woods earlier. This is going to educate the deer much faster than it would if the first day you went out was opening day of riffle or shotgun. With the ability to take a buck with a muzzleloader early has also taken the buck population down. Another thing that has hurt the buck population is the fact that as a state we keep shooting almost all of the year and a half old bucks. This is obviously going to have an affect on the bucks that you see the next year.

Re: Deer running circles Don't know what to say to that one!! Better luck next time and hopefully you might spend a little time at the range in the of season.

Re: New York State antler restrictions??? Well I do understand where Ranger is coming from and it is good to hear your opinion and if you readers can imagine having two deer hunters in the same office makes for a lot of good stories and a few good discussions on our different beliefs. I just wanted to take a second to share a few things that I have learned on this topic that not only may the big businesses enjoy the benifits but as time has gone on biologists have learned more about the age structure and benifits of letting deer get older and controling the population to get it more balanced. When the sex ratio becomes more balanced and the number of older bucks increases and makes the older bucks avaliable for breeding, resulting in less stress on yearling bucks earlier and usually is a better rut where more does are bred. This uaually results in a better deer health and improved body weights due to the fact that the habitat has improved and this will also help other animals in the area. Its not just about the big horns to me its just about getting a stronger deer heard and a healthier deer heard, but I will be honest the big horns are a nice side affect I am in agreement with Ranger in the fact that if NY state does go with an AR that the doe permits will have to be more avaliable to a meat hunter. I am not going to sit here and tell anyone that I know everything that there is to know about hunting, but I will tell you that I am very excited about learning new things and I feel that this would be a great program.

Re: Just makes me sick..... I can understand the frustration that you are going through, there are a lot of people around here who shoot a lot of deer a year on other peoples tags, if they tag them at all. I hate that because that is why many people write on here that they do not see any deer in the woods. If everyone followed the laws there would be a lot more deer in the woods and honestly who could not go out and shoot everything they see. I think that it takes the fun and sport right out of it.

If you had to guess in a normal deer season how many deer do you see on average? You can include bow, muzzleloader and riffle or shotgun if you hunt those.
-
Re: New York hunting age I think that it is a good idea to get children involved at an earlier age then New York state does. By the time a person gets to be 16 they have many other things in their schedule but if we get them involved earlier we might get a few more people hooked like all of us seem to be!!
