  1. Re: 835 shells and chokes Next time try a rock. Less recoil and cheaper.LOL
  2. Re: Turkey gun ????????? [ QUOTE ] One thing to remember about that 835 is, it's somewhat of a light weight gun. And when shooting those 3 1/2" Howitzer rounds, it is one heck of a handful in the recoil department. I use to own one of the first ones they made way back when in the Realtree brownleaf camo. At the pattern range is where the real facts on recoil came to life with that gun. After only 9 shots, I was done!!! Talk about BRUTAL recoil!! I have since went with a Winchester 1300 with the 3" chamber, which is more than enough for turkeys. [/ QUOTE ] Try shooting my NEF 10 ga. Hang on tightly, grit your teeth and let her go!
  3. Re: 7mm-08 Good answer AJ This is exactly why I am considering this round. Also appears to shoot flatter than the .308. Maybe I'll use it once in a while too. No offense to .270 fans. This is also a great round.
  4. Re: 7mm-08 Thanks for the input guys. Actually I have been looking at the Remington 700 mountain rifle with detachable magazine. The DM sure makes unloading easier and I feel safer to unload.
  5. Re: Tradition Muzzleloaders??? Any users here? Hey tallone Just happen to know Borntohunt is busy. He's using 260 grain Winchester Partition Gold Sabots 3 Triple seven pellets and Winchester 209 primers. I have the same gun. use only 2 pellets with the same bullet and primer and have had great results.
  6. Re: 7mm-08 I'm considering buying my wife a 7mm-08 for Christmas. Seems like short action. availability in lighter weight rifles and good ballistics are qualities she would like. Any one out there got an opinion on a real good choice for a smaller frame person to carry and shoot?

    QDM

Re: QDM Hey Thayer. Sorry about that. You're correct 5 is the number. Do you agree with me about the quality of the magazine? Good luck on creating more branches! Can't express the fun we have had and the info we have shared within our branch.
  8. Re: Game farms gotta go! I have talked some to a biologist from NY Dec. I asked about the spread of CWD and how we can help prevent it. Problem here is no one knows for sure. Consenses seems to be contact from infected deer to uninfected deer through feces. saliva and urine. I personally don't carry feces or deer saliva around with me. but I have carried urine with me in the form of bottled scents. How do we really know these scents are pure and don't have a virus within them. Are they certified in any way? I know some of us have saved urine from our deer we have harvested to use ourselves. Maybe this isn't really such a good idea. Ipersonally have refrained from using scents for this very reason. Maybe it sounds a bit off the wall But until I know more about the subject I'll continue to not use any scent. Any input from anyone else on this idea?

    QDM

Re: QDM I am really surprised someone else has not suggested this. Last Dec. we had a small group get together to see if there was any intrest in forming a QDMA branch. Turns out there was. We scheduled a seminar at a local restaurant and our small group grew to over 200. Our speaker was Kip Adams from QDMA national. This gentleman knows deer and and is well informed on any topic concerning deer. He is a trained wildlife biologist. His presentation was excellent and held the intrest of everyone there. After the meeting Kip stayed around and answered any and all questions anyone had. We formed a formal branch and had meetings and seminars on a monthly basis thereafter. Our attendance has been good and have had very positive input from many who were skeptics at the start. I would suggest this approach to any one interested in QDM. Invite all your neighbors. No. you will not change everybody's thinking but it is a good start. Also it is great fun to mingle with others who love to hunt . It is also a great opportunity to share ideas about subgects like land management and food plots. We have had several speakers come in to our meetings and talk about food plots. Got some really good information. One of the best things is the QDMA dosent try to sell you anything. Want to become a member.they will sign you up. The Qdma sends out a magazine about four times a year called "Quality Whitetails" this is perhaps one of the best magazines out there concerning deer and land issues. Well written and great photography. the magazine is well worth the small cost of membership. I would suggest you visit the QDMA website and join up. Look into forming a branch and enjoy your passions year around.
  10. Re: Apple Trees.... Try planting some crab apple trees. Apples are smaller, deer love them and I have had apples still on the tree the following March. Take a look at a product called "Plotsaver" this works! It will protect your trees as well as your food plots to get them started.
  11. Re: Game farms gotta go! Glad to see so many folks are responding to the CWD topic. Iattended a forum last spring in northern NY where a large number of attendies were upset because NY had put emergency regulations in effect to help prevent CWD entering our state. For EX. a ban on feeding deer. The majority of folks objected to the States regs because we had not seen CWD in our state yet. Now we have, and many so called sportsmen are still not fully supporting our DEC. A point in this matter should bebrought up as yhe USDA is in control of captive deer farms regardless of their location. I feel if deer farms are still going to be allowed we should insist they be double fenced with fencing far enough apart to prevent captive deer and wild deer from contact. My real preference would be to eliminate deer farms altogether. Which industry is larger deer farms or hunting?
  12. Re: Food plot question Dog doc is right on target. My main concern would be what works in his home state may not work in yours.Be aware northern seed blends must be cold tolerent. Buy big brand name and follow their advice for planting times. If in doubt call the seed company. If you don!t like their answers find another.Good luck and happy hunting.
  13. Re: New York hunting age Gun powder is cheaper than Pot. Give these kids achance and they may surprise you. 12 years of age should be a good start to teaching good hunting ethics. Show you trust them, teach them, sit back and enjoy them. They will stay with you. You will be rewarded richly.
  14. Re: corn or milo? depends on who is buying it. You or your Dad.
