fellow hunters...I am headed to Kansas this upcoming November 11 thru the 20th to do some bow hunting for whitetail. I will be hunting in units 4 and 6. How anyone have any insight on the follwomg: - What type of terrain / topography can I expect? - Are those heavily hunted units? - In general, how is the rut activity that time of year in Kansas? Really...I am just looking for any helpful insight. All input and info is welcome.

Fello hunters...with archery season right around the corner, I was wondering what most of you do as your preseason preparation at this time of the year. I am assuming most are probably shooting some arrows on a somewhat frequent basis, but what else? Hanging treestands? Scouting with binos? Cardio/conditioning? Shopping for new gear? Absolutely notrhing? I'd like to hear what most are doing to get ready for the upcoming season.

I have a 4 pin Cobra sight. 20, 30, 40, 50...and mainly hunt whitetail in PA and Ohio so that's all I need. I have been out west to hunt elk in Colorado and Idaho and I can say from experience, a 7 pin sight is needed if you want to increase your opportunities.

Depending on the terrain I am hunting and cover...I am usually right around 25 feet. Archery season I mainly use hang-on stands or a climber...and usually get to around 25 feet. Ladder stands I use for gun season...and usually go to about 15 feet.

For all you archers...how many arrows are you shooting daily at this time of the year?

Thinking about a new bow. Was looking at the Bowtech Admiral. Anyone have any comments about this bow, good or bad??
-
its a shame that first buck you posted seemingly meant an unfortunate demise. He was a friggin beast!
-
To each his own...if people weren't buying, they would be producing those types of bows. Some can afford, most can't...I spent $850.00 on my Bowtech General a few years ago because I wanted a new bow so I am guitly as well. But, not sure I'd go up to $2100 for a bow. Depending on what you are hunting and how it needs to perform I guess. Most guys just hunting deer don't need to spend that much.

I give you credit for letting him walk. He'll probably make it through and be impressive again this year. Not sure I could have held off though...that palmation is really cool. Good luck tracking him down this season!

I have a few of them...Lone Wolf and Summit Viper....the Summit Viper is pretty economical and comfortable...not sure where you live...but if their is a Dicks Sporting Goods near you...usually you can pick one up for under $200 this time of the year since they are tying to unload hunting inventory.

I have only used a Whisker Biscuit and would never switch.

Since I started bow hunting hardcore about 7 years ago...I have used Muzzy 3 blade, 100 grain broadheads. I have taken quite a few deer with them...including the 3 bucks I having hanging on my wall...and this past September...I took a 277 inch Pope & Young elk with one too. So..at this point...I don't plan on switching...they are cost efficient and performance effective!

In my opinion, that deer is dead...no doubt. The million dollar question is simply, "where at"? I once about 5 years ago made a 10 yard shot on a buck, down through its neck and into its chest cavity. It was Nov 2nd in PA and the rut was on. From the moment of impact...I saw blood...his coat was covered in blood...and I had a great blood trail. However, it took me and two others 2 days to find this deer.... 2.5 miles from where i shot him. The funny thing is...I gave him almost 5 hours before we even went to begin looking...never jumped the deer once...he just had it in him to go despite what ended up becoming a fatal shot. If 1/2 your arrow is in his body...your broadhead will be slicing away at internal soft organs...this deer will bleed out from the inside. If you want to recover this deer...my only advice is summed up in one word: Perserverance. Good luck!

wow! that is a great buck!
-
Congrats man! That buck is a dandy for sure!
-
too bad you couldn't make the recovery. It seems as though deer tend to do the opposite of what logic tells us the hunter they should do. Yet another lesson taught by the whitetail deer.
-
for me, I only really look to take either broadside or quartering away. Main reason being...too many things can go wrong with the other shots. I like knowing that I can take an ethical heart / lung type shot and have a very high percentage recovery versus marginal and spending time kicking myself in the butt walking through the woods trying to find a wounded animal.
-
man...that buck is simply outstanding! congrats!
-
Chances are...he is not spooked. If that is his core area...he's there...you'll see him again. If he didn't wind you...and just kinda walked away after a bit after you missed...just get back in the stand or adjust your stand location and hunt the same area. Good luck

as they say...$*&! Happens! Only thing I would recommend is to routinely look over your bow for accesories that might be wearing, need adjusted and/or simply replaced. I adjust my equipment and check things over regularly because naturally my bow is going to bumped and banged climbing in and out of treestands and walking in and out of the field. Not sure what type of equipment you use...but for me...I saved the money to get myself better equipment so that I would enjoy my time afield and increase my success. If my equipment is in order...then the blame for any short comings is squarely on my shoulders.

nice buck man...congrats

This is my PA 2010 buck. He is a 9 point. A little on the younger side I believe...probably a 3 1/2 year old. I shot him on October 30th in a new stand I hung this year. The area was loaded with scrapes and rubs as it traditionally is. I had a perfect wind. This buck came in from a thicket area to my left...was working a little away from me. I grunted at him...he swung back around...came up a trail to my right...hit a rub real quick and offered me up a 10 yard broadside shot. I double lunged hit with a pass through shot. He went about 100 yards and dropped. Great thrill...always feel great about a bow kill. He isn't the biggest buck on our farm...but a trophy in my eyes. I was out in Malta, Ohio last week for a few days...I saw 3 deer in 3 days...and no real rutting activity. I saw 1 young 8 point that was kind of out just cruising...I tried to play with him a bit but he did not respond to anyone my calls...just looked backn in my direction and kept walking.
