  1. Tonight I saw for the second time what would be my biggest buck. I'm not a scoring genious, but would put him at least the 150's. But, he busted me! Here's the set-up. I was in a ladder stand at the end of a bean field. Behind in the woods is a funnel created by a deep banked creek bed and the bean field. The wind was westerly from the woods into the field. But when the wind died while the sun set, it shifted to thermals only from the field to the woods. The buck was traveling on the trail in the funnel. He winded me from the thermals and stopped in his tracks. He looked right at me for a long stair down. I couldn't draw or do anything. He eventually bolted snorting tearing out of there big time. So,,,, what should I do now. And how long should I wait to try again. I know this is his core area because I've found his bedding area which is tore up with rubs and scrapes. Both times I've seen him he was traveling to that area. Should I hunt the field edge or stay in the woods in the funnel? Should I hunt the bedding area? Should I get back in there tomorrow or wait a week for him to settle down? Should I use the same stand or move to another tree to throw him off? Thanks,,, this will be my first targeting of a specific buck.
  2. thanks,,, I was thinking of that myself. I will do it at 75.
  3. What's the best/typical range to zero a scope on a .44 revolver? Thanks
  4. I've been having a squirrel problem here. I started out using my pellet gun which worked ok. I've been using my .22 rifle with cb's which are mini .22's. They only sound a little louder than the pellet gun, but are WAY more effective and accurate. illegal in many residential areas since it's a fire arm,, but where I am I can get away with it.
  5. Most definately a compound bow!!!
  6. I'm sorry,,, I just have to gloat somehow,, somewhere. My wife cares like,, zilcho!! This week was huge for me. I was looking for a used youth bow for my oldest of two daughters. I found a hardly used browning bow complete package, all accessories plus some, for below value!! The bare bow cost more new!! wagoo #1! Right below that "add" is a Mathew's Drenalin. Call the guy,,, comes down instantly and effortlessly to a great price below value!! I buy and was able to sell my Outback for 50 more than I payed for the Drenalin!! Wagoo #2 for newer bow and made 50!! (by the way,, it shoots better than my Outback!) Then,,, always wanted a Ruger Super Redhawk revolver to hunt with,,,, Shaaaa bang!!! below value on a like new .44 magnum. #3! Now I need a scope for it!!! anybody.... THE BEST PART IS... : Then,,, out of the blue,,, daughter #2... 7 years old. Has never shown any interest in hunting or shooting says..."Daddy,, can I have Brookie's old bow and shoot in the back yard??" So I take her out to the back yard to shoot the kiddie bow as far as it'll go (like 30 yards) to anywhere in the back yard it lands. She has an absolute blast!!! laughing, giggling, telling me she had no idea how fun that could be. Now she's hooked and wants her friends to come over to shoot arrows. Wagoo #4!! I have a full season of new toys, kids wanting to shoot and hunt!! what could be better? My job sucks but life is soo good!!! Thanks for listening to my amazing week!! cloud 9 over and out!!
  7. I think it's great that you are looking for feedback. I'm a woodworker and like to make furniture. You said you've done a few more and you like them more. The thing that I've learned from making my furniture, is that I actually like looking at my early pieces. When I can see my mistakes and flaws, which used to drive me CRAZY, I actually appreciate them now. I love being able to see my work progress through the years and get better from one to the another. I can point out to people, much like you are, the flaws then show them my better work and teach them the differences on how to critique furniture better. I usually find, as you have, most people have no clue! I can now look back at those pieces and laugh at my stupid mistakes. It really makes it more fun instead of frustrating. Nice work and keep the learning curve going. You are doing a good job!!
  8. I have two H & K USP 40 Expert 16 round magazines. They are New and factory from H & K. They are plastic with Law Enforcement on them. The price tag says 80.00 from Bass Pro. I'd like to sell these, but are they really that expensive? I don't know what to ask for them I would've thought they were only 25-35 bucks new. thanks for your help

    boots

I'm a cold feet quick kind of guy. When it gets below 20 my 1500 gram rubber boots didn't do squat for heat. I've recently bought Cabelas 2000 gram boots. I love them and don't even think about my feet now. They are not even chilled. One wool sock and that's it. I tried a liner, sweat in them and I was cold. After that only 1 wool and we're down in the teens and singles this week with not a thought of cold in my feet!! Cabelas 2000 gram boot was on sale for 119.00
  12. funny,,,, what your going to do to that friendship isn't what he's thinking about!! LOL
  13. bought seven Remington Hangons for 13 each in St. Louis area last week! o'fallon, L. st. louis, Warrenton, Troy, and Wentzville are all out of them. I checked. the 7 I got were at L. St. Louis.
  14. Thanks,,, that is what I was thinking. I'd like to set up on that slope as there really aren't many southern exposures on this property. With similare conditions of cold and clear day I hope he returns to get some warmth. It's also close to a hay field wich is mowed and has green grass for a food source. The woods are white and red oaks so he has it all!
  15. Congrats!!! Nice job!! Doesn't it feel GREAAATTTT???
  16. I spotted a good buck on the south facing slope the other day when it was cold. I had my rifle and couldn't shoot him because it was antlerless season. Is it likely he would be in that location again to bed on a cold day? Do they bed in random areas or do they like the same places?
  17. Federal is next on my list to try. Thanks!!
  18. I've been using 1500 gram Alpha Burleys. The rubber cracked and has punctures so now leak. Temps in the 20's and below my feet get cold. I want a 2000 gram boot that will hold up. I'm looking at Muck Woody Max, Irish Setter Snow claw but Guide Gear has a 2000 gram boot for 80.00 at Sportsmanguide.com Any ideas to help out. I'm a little worried about the muck boots puncturing or cracking with age like the Burley's did. thanks
  19. Ok.. now I shot a small doe. It was a broadside shot at 70 yards. The bullet literally pulverized the whole chest cavity. It blasted the whole sternum off with about 5 ribs on both sides of the sternum gone from the mid point down. Basketball size hole in her side with guts hanging out. Meat blood shot and severe trauma down the center of the neck to between the shoulder blades. Severe organ trauma made the insides look like they went through a blender. This seems like way too much damage for a deer. Crazy thing still ran 100 mph for 100 yards with all this damage! Does this seem like the right bullet. They are so accurate with my gun though.
  20. abosolutely a beautiful buck right there!!!! Congradulations. Your doing the right thing to have a full body mount. Some day the money wont make a difference but he will! Nice Job Man!!!!!!!
  21. I shot this 9pt. buck during our rifle season a couple of days ago. There were 5 bucks chasing one doe that was ready to breed. They were up on the opposite side of a drainage valley in thick brush. Running around in circles it was hard to keep my eyes on the best buck for about 15 minutes. I thought I saw a super nice buck up there. It was like watching a shell game. I'd see different deer come down lower into view and then back up. I watched this guy fend off 4 other bucks. He then came down with the doe and proceed to actually breed with the doe. (rare for most to be able to witness) I thought he was the bigger deer with the thick brush around. However, I am very happy with him due to the bad weather and low deer sightings this week. I'm out of days to hunt so a trophy to me is based on the given conditions and circumstances. And this deer and the excitiment of the hot doe made him a great trophy to me! It was a great hunt that I will always remember. Please score him for me.
  22. Last year I shot a doe twice. After I shot it a second time I inspected the first shot holes. I couldn't understand why she stood there and didn't know she was hit. Well the entry and exit holes on the first shot were both as small as the unexpanded bullet. No blood out either. The bullet zipped through her vitals with no expansion. She just stood there looking at me! The second shot blasted her! I called remington and they said that it didn't hit bone and that can happen. He also said that bullet is for larger game and intended for deep penetration. More than a whitetail needs. What do you guys think? Is this true or is this a good bullet for deer. I use 270 WSM 150 grain. I shot a buck today with them twice. Both bullets performed normally. I don't want to change. These bullets shoot great out of my model 70. The winchester's don't shoot good at all in my gun and I haven't tried any others. thanks
  23. the best camo is when you are not moving.
  24. a friend of mine who has an incredible resume of MONSTER bucks and does great photography with them does that. He hangs a rope holding up the deer head til rigormortase(spell??) sets in and then it stays up for the photos. It's a cool technique.
