  1. Re: Those who process their own deer I've been doing this since the I was 12. I've got my 2 girls helping too. They are 9 and 6 and they have been helping from the age of 3. They started with a butter knife, then a pairing knife and eventually a good knife. Now on to the cuts. Backstraps- cut into steaks or leave in 8 to 10" sections, great for the grill this way. Hind quarters- cubed up and canned(this is a great breakfast replacement for bacon. Just fry it until the juices are gone and enjoy with eggs or whatever.) Front legs, ribs and neck go in for hamburger. We grind all our own adding beef talow. We also smoke all our own bologna and knuckwurst. This is a good thing to teach the kids, just have to keep an eye on them. My girls love to help with this.

    Good Or Bad

Re: Good Or Bad Keep after him and keep your calling simple. I've had more luck not calling until I actual see one just to get him coming in the right direction.
  3. Re: New Spot, Big Deer! Great looking buck, nice mass on him.

  6. Re: Don\'t ask me why Came in from 38 degrees. Good luck in your warm weather. Bucks are bucks they'll follow does in any weather when the time is right.

    Rattling

Re: Rattling Right now some light tapping works well don't be to agressive yet. Give it another week or so then go to town and get some good volume. Don't forget the extra effects. I've had some luck with scrapping the bark of the trees during a rattling sequence. I have had this work whether on the ground or in a stand. Sometimes you gotta throw the kitchen sink at them to get them to react. Best of luck.

    What broadhead?

Re: What broadhead? I'm a Muzzy fan, been using them for years. 125grain with my old bow and 100 grain with 5575 Goldtips on my new Bow. They bust through bone good. That's been my experience. Never been a fan of expandables, really like the fixed blade. Shot placement is the biggest thing to worry about. Hope it helps you out.

  14. Re: My wife is getting into hunting Tried getting mine to hunt but she said "I can eat 'em but I can't shoot 'em".
  15. Re: Update on the Newest Archer in the Family Good job, keep it up Jen.
  16. Re: update on the season Good job. Looks like some great steak suppers ahead of you.
  17. Re: Having bad luck Keep working at it, and good things will happen. It took me 23 years to get my first wall mount with the bow. If it was easy it wouldn't be called hunting.

    Wisconsin Hunters!!

Re: Wisconsin Hunters!! I'm in W Central WI and I have had some real good luck so far. Taken a couple does and my best buck to date. Things have slowed down a bit over the last few days, but it should pick up in the next week or so. To bad all I have left is doe tags until rifle season.
  20. After 17 years shooting the same bow I decided it was time to come into the new age of compound bows. Last spring I bought a Browning Adrenaline SX, carbon arrows and a mechanical release. Basically I started from scratch. After putting in hours of practice with the new bow I felt really confident in the new set up. The biggest difference is the speed. Man is this thing fast. Started out the season with a couple does and then I was able to take my biggest buck yet. I harvested this big boy on 10-12-06. It was one of those nights you really don't plan on seeing much, but good things just happen. It was about 30 degrees, 20 to 30 mph wind out of the SW with a snow/rain mix falling. I'm setup on the N end of a creek bottoms on the edge of a cornfield. There is a water run heading north to south and my stand is at the end of it where it enters the woods. Had a dandy doe with a set of triplettes come out, but the doe didn't offer a shot, good thing now that I look back on it. About 45 minutes later I see this big boy show up about 400 yd to the N. He slowly works his way through a strip of soybeans, the a strip of alfalfa and then disappears at the end of the corn. Figured he crawled into the corn. Rolled the Can over 4-5 times and he came blasting around the corner of the corn and right down the water run to me. He stopped at about 50 yds for just a second and trotted the rest of the way in. He stopped at 10 yards and with a well placed arrow right behind the front shoulder he is mine. He went about 80 yds before piling up. He has a 17" inside with 6" brows and 10 3/4" G-2's and weighed 195 field dressed. Turned out to be quite a night. [image][/image] [image][/image]

    ez-hangers

Re: ez-hangers Had this happen to me tonight putting one in a white oak. Got a little PO'd, crawled out of the stand, grabbed a piece of wood laying on the ground, crawled back up, gave it a couple good whacks, then it went right in. Noise didn't matter much, had a doe pass by about 20 minutes later.

  24. Re: tree stand accident!!!! Glad to hear he is ok. The only thing the crank in steps are good for is hanging your bow on.

    the can

Re: the can The can worked for me. Called in my biggest buck yet with it a couple weeks ago. I have the middle sized can and he heard it out to 200 yards, but I did have the help of 20 mph winds to help carry the sound. But he heard it and came in on a rail.
