If the first arrow went through the boar than it did all the damage it was gonna do and the arrow shaft was not gonna plug the hole. The thick skin of the boar is what makes the hole plug up. If he rolled in the mud than i am sure that did not help. The problem is the best shot you can take with a bow is a quartering away shot right into the pump station. Don't expect a pass through no matter what broadhead you are using because you are most likely to hit the opposite shoulder. The main issue is that 80% of the boars lungs and all the heart is located behind the shoulder blade. If you aim just behind the shoulder blade you have a spot about the size of a baseball to hit the top/back of the lungs. If the leg is back in its step then it is probably covering almost all the lungs. Unlike a deer, a hogs spine drops significantly from mid section of its body to the base of its neck and the animal only has a heart/lung cavity slightly larger than a human hand. I would personally keep using the rage but just pick a different shot angle. Good luck and hope you get one. Success with a bow feels so much better.

Thanks all. We have him down to a pretty good pattern now. My brother should have the best shot at him for opening weekend unless he changes his patterns. There is an 8 pt that is traveling with him that will dwarf this guy. Just a couple more weeks and hopefully we can see exactly what he scores. Good luck to all.

Any guesses on what this guy will score? I am amazed on what he put on for size over the past month. The one pic is of him one month earlier. If this don't get your heart pumpin for the season to start nothing will. We got our first hard horned buck at my dads property this weekend up in Michigan while i was visiting.

Here are a some nice bucks that we have on the property this year. The 8pt in the beanfield is probably on the top of the list. If you look at the other 8pt he has some wicked brow tines on him and a possible kicker off the back side of his left main beam. He never would stop and pose for the camera very good to get better pics. The 10pt in the final pic also has a nice little kicker off his left G2. This year is going to be a rough one cause we seem to have a few bucks running around that will go low to mid 120's that need another year or two. Will have to keep finger off release and trigger. lol...

This cold front should really help kickstart things. I think you should start to see good movement this weekend and start the early rut tactics. I unfortunately won't be in the woods this weekend but have cams out and have my brother checking them once this week and once next. Really thinking you will see great movement in 2 weeks.

The reason i think the neck looks so unreal is because it comes off the shoulders straight and then they try to make the whole turn at the top of the neck. As far as the arrow, I don't like it. Sorry.

Thanks guys for the help. I don't mind driving 30 to 45 minutes to hunt mornings. I drive over an hour at time back home. I looked at Ft Cambell just briefly and it looked like it was alot of weekend hunting and i will be going back to IL to hunt on weekends but maybe i will look into it a little bit more. Thansk again guys.

Hey guys, Was wondering if any of you TN guys knew of any places to hunt close to Nashville. I will be working there from mid October till Feb. some time. Wanted to get in some hunting during the week while there. It looks like there are a couple of state lands that might be within 30 minutes. Didn't know if any of them stood out better to anybody. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bobby

What's the biggest deer you have passed?
rad_112176 replied to hoosierhunter's topic in Deer Hunting
In the past i have let bucks pass that were pushing 120". The ones that get me are the ones that happen so fast and then you get ground shrinkage. I love the experience but just wish my trigger/release finger wouldn't have been so jumpy. LOL. This year i am raising my standards and am holding for a 130"+ even if i have to have tag soup for my buck tag. -
Congrats Flintlock. Waiting on season to open here in IL but thinking about doing a little hunting in MO just to start a little earlier. LOL...

I would say if you could just stick to 1500 calories a day and a little exercise you would see it come off quicker you would think and then also teach you better eating habbits for later in life. I have been on this diet with minimum exercise and have still lost a bit of weight. I am 5'10" and weighed 200-205. I have been watching my calories for the past couple of months and now i vary from 185-190 and more to the 185 area. I am just starting to get into exercising in the evening so hopefully shed a few more before summer. Another key thing is to eat multiple meals in a day. The more you can scatter out those 1500 calories the more you will get your matabolism working for you. If you eat them all in a couple of meals then it is not as productive especially if your eating them closer to bed time. Hope this helps and good luck.

That was good. Thanks for posting..

I agree with you Flintlock. I don't see anything wrong with them and had to shoot one for a year when i had a wreck and messed up my arm. I have noticed the states that are using them have alot more youth getting involved in it. Think all states should give you the choice to do so.

I am starting to hunt Kentucky next year. From what i have seen and heard i think it is one of the most under rated states out there. My brother started hunting it last year and the amount of deer he seen was amazing.

I drive past here every weekend during the summer on my way to my camper on the Ohio River. They do have some amazing bucks that run around there. Don't really know why everyone gets so riled up about this guy buying a hunt. Each hunt is what you take from it. This is no different than the baiting and not baiting issue. If you have the money and enjoy the experience for what it is then go for it. I personally would not get an enjoyment from it but as long as this guy respects the animal and understands the situation for what it is then go for it. It always amazing how everyone is so quick to condemn the way others hunt or how they hunt. I just enjoy hunting how ever i am doing it and just take each experience for what it is.

I won't be making it out this weekend but plan on catching the final weekend. Seen plenty of deer on there feet this weekend but nothing in bow range. Won't be able to make it out for the next couple of weekends so it will be a hail marry that weekend to fill the freezer.

I better do a little more research on this one. Don't need any more kids at this time in my life. LOL
-
Well, i did a little more research on it last night and have found out that deer feed best when the the pressure is 29.88 - 30.29 weather it is rising or falling. This could be at any time of the day. Usually when the presssure is falling it means clearer skys and colder weather to come. When it is rising usually means cloudier days but don't always mean rain. It does mean rain will be in the area but maybe not where you are at. If the pressure is staying steady and it is greatly below or above the measurements above then the deer will probably not move all that great. I guess the bottom line is to hunt as much as you can but i do take off work alot of days throughout season and like as much information as i can on which days to sneak back in town early. Any more thoughts on this would still be greatly appreciated.
-
Its my understanding that when the pressure is rising or falling it causes deer to move more. Does anyone hunt according to this and if so what do you think is better (rising or falling). I know that this usually happens when a front is coming or leaving and that is why it is always best to hunt just before or after a front. What alot of people miss is that the pressure can have big shift days before an actually storm shows up. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all, Bobby

Thanks for bringing this back to live. I have heard the story partially over the years but never did go back and read the original post. It was great to read. 4 more years to that age now buckee. You might want to only be picking fights with those nubbin heads now..... I think you could still take one of them. LOL.....

Awesome buck. That has to be a good record book buck for Alabama. From what i have seen from some friends down that is well above standard for a trophy whitetail.

The rate will very depending on the land. I have one lease that I am part of in Southern IL that costs us $3600 for 350 acres. 100 acres of that are field and the rest is woods. It is actually a pretty good priced lease. If you get up to Pike or Brown County plan on spending double that if not more. You will notice more leases start to come available this spring due to the economy the way it is alot of leases are not getting renewed. Good Luck....

I am thinking that this cold weather in Central IL may have kicked in the second rut. Have got a couple of text messages from guys on stand yesterday and today and have told me that they have seen some bucks pushing does. Hoping to be in stand tomorrow evening to fill my second IL buck tag. Have the new Traditions just waiting for its first kill. Good luck to everyone this weekend.
