  1. Re: What do you think about feeding deer? LETMGROW.... MI had a much worse case of this, but now it is narrowed down to a few counties on the north part of Lower Peninsula. There rule now is that you can bait but with only 2 gallons of bait and it has to be spread around a 10' radius. When MI first realized they had a problem it was spread in most of the counties where we hunt. If you read the most recent surveys on CWD they are now debating the theory that this disease is spread due to nose to nose contact. I beleive MI does have there head out of the sand and has done more research into this to not only think about what is best for the deer, but what is really causing the issue and what are the best attacks at fixing it. MI has up to 1,000,000 hunters that go into the woods on opening morning so it is not as easy for the state to just do what they want without the back up to support it. The problem in other states is that the number of hunters have a hard problem overcoming the nervous actions of the DNR to what they need to do to stop the desease. I have hunted in michigan for 20 years and to today i have not killed a deer or nor do i know someone that has killed a deer with CWD. We have all our deer checked when we come back from up north and at the check stations we have yet to hear them say they have found one checked in at there station. So I guess you can say what some people see as a big problem, could actually be a state taking a positive role to take care of it at the early stages.
  2. Re: What do you think about feeding deer? Feeding is fine. This is a debated subject time and time again. States that can't feed have all kind of studies that show why you can't and states that can have studies that say it is fine. MI has had a bad problem with CWD and it still is allowed to bait.
  3. Re: whisker biscuit I would suggest to try to find a good bow shop close to your house and talk to the guys working there. Alot of times they have releases in the back that they will let you try out to see what one you like best. The wisker biscuit is very nice to have especially if you are just getting into bowhunting. It will help take the worry off your mind of your arrow falling off the rest at draw. I remember this as a kid and would not change my biscuit for anything. Once you get your bow take it with you to the shop and they can help you with setting it up. Most of the shops i have been to are eager to help out someone that is trying to get his bow set up. They can set you peep sight and help just get everything set up for you. Usually you don't have to pay anything for the service except if you are getting it restrung. Hope you have some luck.
  4. Re: silver skin I always like to leave my meat in a cooler on ice for 24 hrs before i start to process. It really seams to firm the meat up good and cuts so much better. Good luck to ya.
  5. Re: Tonight at the blind Congrats on the doe. Shot my first deer with a pistol ( Ruger 44 Mag. ) this year. I think i am addicted now.
  6. Re: Unbelievable WI Hunting Season I was thinking the same thing Hoyt03 was thinking. I have taken a few doubles in the past few years and that was a chore all its own. I do process all my own meat and do it by myself, so when i looked at that pick i was thinking " Well looks like i know what i will be doing for the next couple of weeks " Congrats on the good season. I have 3 in the freezer now and working on a couple more.
  7. Re: Lets see your 06 Deer! How do i post my pic on here?
  8. Re: got another one Congrats
  9. Re: Broadheads \" Mechanical vs Fixed \" I have not shot a deer and was not able to recover it until this year. I understand that shot placement is the key, but like what i said in my original post was that i hate knowing i am shooting something that is not really the best option for the game that i am shooting. It is about the same as using a hollow point bullet in my 44 mag. I know that if the shot placement is perfect and everything goes well that it will kill it on the spot, but if the deer happens to move slightly or i am just off it will mushroom on the bone and could possibly not enter the vitals. It is always good to be checking on what are the best options out there. I appreciate all the info on what you are using and going to try out the Mussy's and Montec's this weekend to see what works best with my set up. Thanks again and good luck with the rest of the season.
  10. Re: Broadheads \" Mechanical vs Fixed \" I have looked at the Montec blades and so far i would say that is what i would go with. Looks like it would be the most durable. Wondering how they hold a edge? I usually change out my blades everytime i shoot a deer on the Spitfires so i assume i would need to resharpen these after every use. Thanks for the input.
  11. I am seriously thinking of making a change in broadheads. Wondering if i could get some opinions of what everyone is currently using and why. I currently use 100 gr Spitfires. I have hit 3 deer with what i thought were good hits at first until really thinking of the shot. All the shots that i could not recover the deer on where ones that i hit the front shoulder bones and either did not get good penetration or it did not even get into the boiler room past the bone. I like using mechanical broadheads cause they do leave a much better blood trail with the larger cutting diamiter when you make that great shot, but hate to injure deer just by being off a few inches and hitting the shoulder.. Thanks for the help and look forward to the input. Thanks guys.
  12. Re: 12/02/06 Public Land Buck Indiana Nice looking buck. Where about in Indiana do you live? Just moved to Evansville this past year and still looking for good places to hunt. Congrats
  13. Re: tapeing hunts Me and my brother have taped each other a few times. I am going to tell you though the camera is bad luck. Just kidding. It is for us though. We always see deer and shoot plenty of deer throughout the year but every time we get out the camera we seem to go cold. We had a friend try to tape my brother this year and he missed 2 does just a couple of minutes apart. It was nice to replay this for him time and time again to start off the season. Hope you have luck with it.
  14. Re: cleaning and hanging deer We have never really hosed ours out. I usually have a large bottled water in my backpack and i use this to clean my hands and to rinse it out just slightly. Would aggree if you had gut shot it or got into the guts pretty bad that it would be a good idea. Why do they say that it is not a good idea to hose it out? Guess i never have heard this, but we have processed our own meat since as long as i remember.
  15. Re: The Red neck way to bow hunt I hate to say it but i am currently hunting on my friends dads land right now that makes this same situation. He has 6 acres on the edge of town and his neighbor has about 6 acres of thicket behind his pond. He wanted to know if i could kill a couple of the deer cause they were rubbing his new pine trees all up. Thought i was going to shoot a little scrub buck or something until i drove by there on Saturday morning and noticed a 11 pointer standing about 20 yards from his garage. I set up just inside the thicket about 10 feet and made a natural ground blind. I am only about 60 yards from his garage. Was only able to hunt on Sunday morning so far and had a doe about 6 yards from me and never had a idea i was there. Going to hunt hard this weekend. Kinda weird hunting with bow and watching people go get there Sunday papers about 120 yards from ya.
  16. Re: The calls you take with you... I always take my True Talker grunt tube and primos bleet can with me. I usually have my rattle bag somewhere in my back pack also because you never know what a large buck may come to. I have have bucks come in to the rattle back early and late in the season with just barely rubbing them on my leg so it sounds like a couple of smaller bucks messing around. For no more room than these calls take up they are better to have on hand instead of wondering if you could have done something different.
  17. Re: Heres that 9 point finally Nice deer...
  18. Re: my first deer(pic) Congrats on the deer. Very nice one for your first. Going to get it mounted? I had my first buck mounted and now it is pretty small compared to my others, but it is pretty cool to look up at the wall and see where my addiction came from.
