  1. Re: deer I would agree with the food plot. It will probably actually be cheaper than trying to put out the feed year around. Just more labor on your end and you will have to keep on it pretty good the first year to get a good growth. The nice thing is next year the smae area will have more minerals in the ground from you plot last year to help the growth. If you have a large enough area you could actually put in 2 with one being possible a winter wheat or some type of food that could last through the winter.
  2. Re: i hate deer I would personally go to the owner now and talk with him. I usually like to talk to the neighboring property owners so that you can make a good freindship before hand. You could start by talking what deer you have seen and see if they have had any luck. Then lead into asking him if he would like for you to come and get him when a deer may run on his property. You would be surprised on how many property owners give you permission before hand knowing that you were a smart enough hunter to understand the property you were hunting. And then if he is stubborn then you know before hand and will have to be very picky on what shots you take. Hope it helps
  3. Has anyone shot the new 50 cal. by S & W? I have looked at this gun a few times and i own a Ruger 44 mag. They say it kicks the same as a 44 mag. I have started getting into hunting with handguns and like anything i get into i get a little addicted. Just wondering how this guns shoots.
  4. Re: Handgun harvest entry thread I wanted to post my first buck kill with my 44 mag on here. How do i post a pic? I put it in the trophy den but don't know how to here. Thanks for any help.
  5. Re: Taking a doe with twin fawns??? I have heard that your mature bucks will look for a doe that gives off 2 or even 3 yearlings every year. He then likes to follow her till she comes in. Wouldn't this mean that you would want to keep her on your property and possibly look for one that only has one yearling with her? I have just heard this recently so I don't really know if it is true or not.

    20pt buck

Re: 20pt buck No berries.... Must have just got married... LOL JK Congrats on the buck. Gotta love those different kind of bucks.
  7. Re: MONSTER Oklahoma Deer!!! WOW... Could you imagine trying to pull back on that thing? How could you not look at the horns. I would have to make sure he didn't have a tree stuck on his head or something.
  8. Re: More Meat Sounds like it will be good eating. Nobody should hang you out to dry cause who is to say what is too far? Have a friend that shot one of his biggest bucks at 60 yrds and shoots does at that distance all the time. It's all on how the person shoots to determine there own distances. I personally would only shoot out to about 40-45, but then again if i had a good shoulder i would probably practice longer shooting. Congrats.

    My Oct. buck

Re: My Oct. buck Very nice one. Weight?
  10. Re: Thermocell mosquito repellent I used mine all early season and i hunt some really swampy areas. Never had a deer wind me. Don't know what i would do without it now.
  11. Re: Tracking overnight... Good luck tracking it and let us know how you do. The temps are fine and hopefully cold enough to keep the yotes noses down a little. Good luck.
  12. Re: Cought on Camera I would prosecute him for tresspassing. A man at that age i don't think is going to scare easy. I know if you sent it to my grandpa ( who would never do anything like that ) you wouldn't scare him. I doubt he would stop if you just approach him. I guess you could let the police know you just wanted to have a stern warning given to him. That would probably go further than you doing it. Hope you get it resolved.
  13. Re: Tennesse monster That thing is wicked......
  14. Re: lost buck Be sure to let us know what they say. I would simply explain the whole thing to them and see what they say. Good Luck.
  15. Re: Question about Buck Pictures I will say one thing. If that is from a fight then you have one MONSTER on your property. I have seen scars on a deers neck like this before and they were from fighting. This will occur when a large buck will pin another buck to the ground. Again i say it would have to be a large buck to do this. If you look at the first spot on his neck you can actually see that something has cut the skin. Mange will make him loose his hair, but it does not make a hole in the skin like that. Could have been a bad run in with a wire fence also. Never thought about that.
  16. Re: How far do they run? Actually a heart shot will bring them down much faster, but the chances of hitting the shoulder bone does not make it a very good choice to strickly go for this shot. On a quartering away shot you can go for the gusto but i can tell you from experience this year that there shoulder blades are very tough and if you do make it past the first shoulder blade you will most likely not have a exit hole to have a blood trail. I have not lost a deer until this year and since this year i have lost 3 and as i sit back and think about what i was doing i can tell you i am almost certain that i got the front shoulder and did not get enough penetration or did not have a blood trail. I spent many hours looking for these deer when if I would have paid a little more attention to shot placement it could have been alot easier. Went out this weekend and shot another doe and was sure to hit the double lung. Watched her run about 70 yards and never had a chance. Had good blood trail the whole way.
  17. Re: bow hunting in lbl I have not been able to hunt it, but have been told numerous times that i needed to make it there. I live in Southwest Indiana so it is a little bit of a drive. When i have to drive somewhere i drive to IL.
  18. Re: What do you think about feeding deer? As far as the deer starving itself stated earlier in this forum said it is actually not true. ACIDTOSIS is actually the case where there is a high level of Alkaline in the body. Most bates used can actually prevent this such as carrots, apples, some suplimental feed, and even corn. I would think that installing a food plot would over heard you deer population would much worse than setting out some bait piles. We have bait piles on my dads property in MI and usually the deer that come in on these are the same deer over and over. Not vast amounts of different deer. Most deer use these bait piles as there secondary feed on the way to feilds and other feeding areas. Just 2 more of my cents......
  19. Re: A good sunday morning in the woods..... LOL. You would have to bring that up wouldn't you. For everyone else I shot a 3 legged 8 pointer last year on Thanksgiving morning. He actually had 3 legs from birth though.
  20. I went out hunting Sunday morning with it being about 30 degrees outside. It didn't feel that bad since i was in the woods on Saturday where it was about 10 degrees. I seen a couple of does run by and waited to see what was chasing them. You know at this point what is running through my mind. BUCK. I seen a bid bodied deer moving torward me bobbing and weaving through trees. I couldn't tell what it was until she got in about 100 yards. It was a doe and the bobbing was coming from her having half of her front leg blown off during gun season the week before. She got in to about 15 yards and i decided that it be best if i take her. I shot her and decided i would call it a day and go get my deer dollie. On the way out of the woods i was walking through some chest high grass and i heard some turkeys ahead of me. I dropped my treestand off my back and bent over to start walking torward the corn feild i heard the noise coming from. I worked to about 30 yards from one of the turkeys with a tree line separating us. I stood up slowly and decided to wait till i had a good shot on one. It was not long until i had a nice hen walk 20 yards in front of me. I slowly pulled back and released just to watch her do 2 flips and fall over. My first turkey with a bow. Weighed in a 19 lbs. Had a blast with the kids plucking feathers once i got home.
  21. Re: Figure This Out Do you have much poaching around the area? We just had some guys get caught FINALLY out by my dads property. We have know for years that they were poachers with bows and guns and have called the law ( both police and game warden ) on them numerous times. They were finally busted. Not for sure what they got fined. It could be that you have some poachers at work and if the deer does not drop quickly they get out of the area before getting busted. With you seeing deer in the summer it really makes me lean torward this.
  22. Re: When to use a grunt I should also say at this time of year i will rarely try to call a deer once i see it. It would have to be a monster for me to try. They really don't respond if they can't see what it is that is calling to them. Always good to get them in though if you are on the edge of a good thicket. They can't see in to it very well sometimes they will come to see.
  23. Re: When to use a grunt I use my grunt tube on a regular basis. It was best put to me when i first started really looking in to it. You use a call when trying to call every other species ( Turkeys, Ducks, Coyotes ). Why wouldn't you use it when trying to get deer closer. I mainly bow hunt so just seeing a deer don't guarntee me a shot at it. You have to get it in closer. At this time of year i will use a soft doe grunt or young buck grunt and make what they call a social grunt which is 3-4 soft grunts and being sure to pause between each one like a deer would to see if something responds. Just pause for a couple of seconds. I usually call blindly about every 20 to 30 minutes just depending on how i feel. Just the way i do it. I am sure some will agree and some will not.
  24. Re: buck mount finally done Nice buck.....
  25. Re: are they legal? I would have to agree with Texan Til I Die. Gotta love politics.
