  1. Here is a picture of my new set up.Remington Genesis "Buckmasters Edition"Scope: Leuopold Ultraslam 3X9X40 with SABR reticle. I hope to try it out during the IL late season antlerless only season (third weekend of January). I had my 7 year old daughter practicing (not shooting yet) with it today. The 4-5 inch eye relief makes it easy for her to acquire the target. The salesman at Cabelas recommended American Pioneer powder with sabot hallow points so that's what I went with.I'm going to try my daughter out with 80 grains of powder. I've heard that should down a deer inside 100 yards? http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/standard-pod-wrapped.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=null-cat601638_TGP&rid=&indexId=cat601638&navAction=push&masterpathid=&navCount=0&parentType=index&parentId=cat601638&id=0031501&cmCat=netcon&cm_ven=netcon&cm_cat=www.cabelas.com&cm_pla=N/A&cm_ite=netcon&rid=0180101070502
  2. Go to the Pope and Young Link below: http://www.pope-young.org/minimum-scores_charts.asp Find the type of deer you will be scoring and decide if you will use the typical or non-typical score sheets. Then fill in the blanks. My first time using them a couple years ago I was 5 inches lower than than an official measurer. In case you didn't know: Boone and Crocket uses the same system. B&C has a higher minimum entry score and doesn't restrict to bow and arrow.
  3. I've never had any success with grunting after gun season.

I have lost (more likely mis-placed) my bino harness. I know it's somewhere so I won't buy a new one. Meanwhile I'm hunting without it when I really need one. I figure it will show up on the last day of the deer archery season (mid-Jan.)

    Boiling question?

Thanks RTF. The taxidermist has already removed the antlers and a section of the skull which opens up the cranial vault. The brain will come out easy for my case.
  7. I've heard to use tape over the end of the ML barrel to keep out moisture. What type of tape have you had success with? Keeps out moisture and doesn't come off. Thanks Frank
  8. Welcome to the RT forums. Nice 8-pointer. Congratulations!
  9. Not sure about MW hunting in your county, but with deer like that everyone else will be! Great deer ya got there. Welcome to the RT forums.
  10. I'm having a chest mount completed on the buck I took this season. I asked the taxidermist to save the skull of my deer this year so i could have the teeth examined to determine the age. I'd like to keep the jaw bones (perhaps the whole skull minus the antlers would be easier)? I'm picking up the skull tomorrow (frozen) and was wondering what you all would recommend? I'd rather not use the beatles I've heard of, boiling sounds like the way to go? Is there a solution that is needed or will plain old water work fine? About how long would I anticipate letting it boil? Thanks, Frank
  11. Last harvest was a big 8-pointer on Nov. 21st. Haven't been out a lot though. I got my 2 does (one in Oct. and one in early Nov.). I will also have a 350.00 taxidermist bill for the 8-pointer. I'm still seeing does near feeding areas, but no bucks. If there was a rut this year it sure went quick!
  12. I'd say could be either. I've seen piles at feeding and bedding locations. Not seeing the beds would make one believe a feeding area.
  13. The deer with the broke brow tine in your first post has a thick neck which would lead me to believe he is older (3.5). However, it's mid November and he may be in full rut. If so he may only be 2.5 years old. Not too sure about the others, but I'd say 3.5 looks about right.
  14. Nice looking buck there. I love the long brow tines. I'd say he'll gross 140 inches (net in the low 130's).
  15. I bought the same scope for my ML. Got it from Cabela's. I had one of those coupons where the more you spend the more you save. I also cashed in some points. They had to order it (should be in any day). I'll have them install it and put a picture up. I looked inside the omega and the Ultimate slam. I really like the SABR reticle better. That small dots on the omega BDC reticle are difficult for me to see (run together some). I also liked the clarity better. I think it's a scope that will be turning a lot of heads this next year.
  16. What do you think Ishi paid for this set up?
  17. Any legal harvest is worthy of honorable celebration (bragging). If not then why post a picture? Congratulations on a fine looking deer.
  18. Not sure how I'd like 6 weeks alone. One, maybe two but that would about it. Nice clip, thanks for posting.

    Rifle/Scope Choices

I've heard a lot about the .270 for deer. Might want to consider a 50 cal. muzzeloader rifle as well??? I have a Nikon Buckmasters scope that works great and doesn't break the bank.
  20. Welcome and congratulations! It took me 20 years to get my first deer over 125 inches. In 06 I took my first P&Y. Then in 07 I took my second. In 08 I took another buck over 125 inches (biggest to date with a shotgun). Hopefully you too will have the big buck ball rolling!
  21. Hate to hear that. Prayers on the way. Hope you're little deer hunter gets better soon.
  22. A couple nice looking deer there. Congratulations!
  23. I always thought of duck/geese hunting as the most expensive? Boat/blind, decoys, waders, and a 12-10 ga. that will run 500.00 easy with some of the nicer semi-autos running well over 1000.00. True, top end bows will run 1000.00, but there are several decent new bows that a beginner could use that run under 300.00 (with a set up package included). Cabela's has several in that price range. I guess any sport can get as expensive as you let it get.
  24. Here in Southern IL. it was 60 yesterday afternoon and 14 this morning.
  25. Great looking deer! Congratulations! I've never had to flip the bill for 2 mounts in 1 year. It would be a nice problem to have. I think I'd have to sell my wifes bookcase to get the extra money.
