I use the Wasp BOSS SST, fixed blades, if something goes wrong it's my fault not the broadhead. I haven't had that problem yet. Leave bad blood trails, but I haven't really had to trail anything, just watch em fall, go over and get em. Shot several deer, and an elk with em.

Here's a better pic of the second buck, his net green score was 129 3/8. He only had a 14 in spread, so you can figure what the mass was on him. The smallest circ measurement was still over 3 in!
-
That's a stud! I saw it earlier, didn't know where you shot it at, you just said Corps land. I kind of have somewhat of an idea how the deer move. Our public hunting up here is open for only the first 9 days of rifle season, and closed the last 7 days to rifle hunting. Obviously the hunters on private land push big deer onto public, then usually they'll stay there for the remainder of the season.

Northern Oklahoma, on the Arkansas river, as it comes out of Kansas. I have private land, but I've had my best luck on public land. I wouldn't have thought the two biggest deer I've shot would have came off of public.

I think they scored him as a typical, I heard two different scores, and both where over 200. Like I said, I'm not sure on the details, just the gentleman that shot him and the general area where he was harvested.
-
I recieved this pic from my cousin on my cell phone. I'm pretty sure it's 200 incher, but don't know all the details. It's one of my cousins that harvested the deer too.

LOL, snort wheezed! That's funny, I don't care who you are!
-
Hoosier, my apologizes! I think he might be crossbred, the trail cam pics did him NO JUSTICE, what a stud!
-
Dang, he must be cross bred between an elk! LOL, I have a friend that has a 390 inch bull elk, he has 14 inch bases, and this buck is only 4 inches off? I've seen a 160+ inch 8, that buck is not near the same size. He's an awesome buck, and I'd shoot him, but 160, I can't see it.

The young bucks are still grouped up, went out yesterday 10/26. We had a cold front move through, saw 6 bucks, 4 does, only 1 of the bucks was decent, the others where young and still hanging together. The older one responded to my grunt. Which obviously the older machure bucks are starting to get territorial. I had a spike come in hard to my rattling last week. By the way I hunt unit 13. As far as tree stands go, I keep tree spikes, a rope and bow hanger with me. I usually find a good fork on a larger tree on a funnel, ridge or tree line seems to be the best. Keep some prunes with you to cut a cedar branch to help with cover scent!!
-
I'm not too familar with those units, but it looks like tallgrass prairie, cedars, river bottoms, and ag. If you keep in touch I'd be more than happy to keep you posted on the which phase of rut they might be in. I hunt in southern Kansas, ALOT, the rancher/farmer is a good friend and he keeps in contact with me, lets me know where and what the deer are doing. Super nice guy. So far, they was still grouped up as of last week. Should start splitting up and fighting within the next week or so.

I'd just practice with whatever broadhead you do decide on. Hunters have their own preferences for their own reasons. Mine is accuracy, doesn't matter what size of hole you leave if you don't hit where your aiming. The the other is cutting size, some will say that if you have a marginal shot and a good broadhead, it'll pay off, but then again, it comes down to accuracy. It also depends on your bow setup. I like the Wasp Boss SST 100gr. These broadheads fly EXACTLY like my field points do. The accuracy is UNREAL. I have no problem with taking a 60 yrd shot with one. Then again, I practice those shots, ALOT. It makes the closer shots easier, but still have to becareful to not rush the shot too. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE!! You'll decide on the ones you like, may take a couple of kills or misses, but good luck with whatever you decide on!!

Here's a couple of links, you think your good at aging deer on the goof or jaw bone! This gentleman has his PHD from Texas A&M. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading these, then try to age a deer on the hoof! How Accurate is Aging Deer on the Hoof? Aging White-Tailed Deer

I'd say brisket shot. Dark hair would be more on the lower chest than the back. I've shot a doe like that, didn't kill her, then shot a buck about 15 minutes later, hit him a little higher, found him 2 weeks later, obviously I clipped something in the lower chest. I'd look around water, alot of times with a lethal shot they'll head towards water!

You could keep spraying, but what if you have something the deer would browse on after the clover goes dormant? Sounds like you know what your doing, using round up before hand, and then spraying afterwards. When I was in school we had to pick a particular crop to plant, we was responsible for planting. We had the option of spraying before, and then we where responsible for after. Most of the research I did on spraying alfalfa, I used Raptor, but I had to spray early. I personally would wait, like you said, then spray when spring comes. Nothing else get advice from you local ag. agent.

Good bucks! I don't know what the last one would go, I'd say he still could use a year or two, but that nice of a buck, it'd be hard to pass up!
-
Awesome deer, and heck of a shot! Must have a good teacher.
-
That's awesome! Warning though, you might have started something! LOL Lets hope so, huh!
-
Congrads, that's a stud! What lake did you get him on?
-
I can't stand Jake, but he is good, whether you like him or not. I don't really have a favorite either, but it's cool to see the hunters or country boys out perform the competition shooters!

a free $170 stand....what would you do?!?!?
abrown replied to MichiganHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
I have several stands because of that! I work for Corps of Engineers, and our regulations on Corps property is that a stand can't be hung for more than 24 hours, not to mention screw in tree steps aren't allowed. I don't enforce that, cause I think it's kind of crazy, so from September thru March, I leave stands alone, but after March I remove them. I haven't had 1 hunter come in and ask for their stand or complain about it, you know why, because when hunters do that, they know their wrong and if they claim that stand, it'll cost more than what the stand is worth in fines to get it back! So, don't feel guilty about keeping it, because whoever left it was wrong and KNEW IT! -
I'd go with Redfield, the numbers are larger and easier to read than any other range finder, except the ones that are red! Their also smaller, and cost alot less than Nikon, Bushnell, or Leupold range finders!
-
I tried that last year, he just stayed on the ridge and chuckled. Oh I know that's why it's called hunting, that's why I'm a junky!

Guys and Gals, I need some advice on calling in call shy elk! I've tried several things. Tried bugling, estrus calls, and just simple mews. Seems like these dang elk are smarter than an ole gobbler with hens. I'm sure he has cows with him, but just doesn't want to come all the way in, usually hangs up about 100 yrds or so. My next option is keeping the caller farther back than the shooter, but when hunting in dark timber it is hard to set up on a particular route. ANYONE have advice?
