XT, I went college to learn, majored in Natural Resources, loved it, most of my professors where very professional, kept their personal views to themselves, but it was an ag school though. While on recruiting duty I learned, if someone walked up and complained to me while in uniform, the best way to respond was, you just nod your head, and tell em, I respect your opinion even if I don't agree, that's why I wear this uniform, if your ever interested in keeping those rights, come and see me! The mind of the youth starts in the house, with the parents, don't blame the education system for doing their job, lay blame where it should, parents!

I'm fortunate enough to be able to hunt OK and KS, both states have VERY different seasons. OK legalized crossbows, KS doesn't allow em. KS muzzle loading season is the last week in September, and the rifle season is the first week in December, which keeps the pressure off the bucks during rut. OK has ml season during pre-rut, and rifle during rut, which in my opinion is hard on the machure bucks. One thing I do like about OK, is we have lifetime licenses, which means I'll NEVER have to buy another hunting license or tag, goes for turkey also. As far as managing deer herds it's going to ALWAYS be debated between the max amount of $$$ the state can bring in vs. what the public wants, that just my opinion. They will keep the wildlife in mind, to the minimum of what is needed to sustain the herd vs. how a private land owner manages his land to maxumize the quality. Quantity vs. Quality, quantity will always win, sad to say!

Sound like it's that chapter, cause they actually have hunts for the WWP around here, so it's kind of hard for me to believe that, especially when their located on a military base.

What's the best way to get your deer out of the woods??
abrown replied to kudu88's topic in Deer Hunting
Find you a HEAVY DUTY poly sled, and make a harness for your bike. We shot an elk about 2 miles from the truck, and used one, only made two trips! They run around $100. I'm pretty sure it will work on half an elk a deer won't be a problem! -
I'm glad your ok! Did you get the backstraps? lol I hear ya, I had a replacement front end put on my Z71. We had a nice buck hit out here, and the man behind the car that hit it had to cut it's throat to put it down, the lady behind him flipped out too! That was done after the gamewarden had given the instructions to do so, seeing how he wasn't in the area. I bet the cars behind you or coming up was thankful that you moved it!

Hang in there bud, I love to hunt ALOT too, my wife kind of breaks the mold as far as women go, but she still hits me about my hunting. They don't quite understand it's not about blasting away at something or the need to KILL something, but the memories that are made and lessons learned in the deer woods! I love the outdoors SO much I went to school for it, and am very blessed to be a Park Ranger on a lake, so every morning I get to sit at my desk and look at the lake. Only thing I can say is, stick to your guns and just let her know, that family will ALWAYS come first! I took my 3 year old daughter hunting the other day, walked around a couple fields, she was wanting me shoot something, we did see a young buck, but the thought of shooting something with her that young, and thinking that was the ONLY thing it was about didn't sit right with me, I tried to explain we want to only shoot old deer, not babies or young ones. That's a hard topic trying to explain to a 3 year old. Hang in there bud, try to get your family involved, then your wife will be out numbered!

Same here, get a piece of 3/4 plywood, and shoot each arrow in it, the one that survives, use them!

I talked to a hunter from Tennesee, he was telling me the same thing, that the bucks are small. I think and will still say, people cry out about genetics when the main problem is the age of harvest. Look at the states that have big deer, they have a one buck limit, makes that gun totten redneck think twice about shooting a spike if he knows that'll be the end of his hunting, also with QDMA your just managing numbers not quality, with trophy management you can do both, but ones more intensive. Here in OK their trying to combine our ML and Rifle bucks to just one, which is awesome. BTW, when I pulled jaw bones for our wildlife department, the majority of the BIG bucks didn't get their jaw bone pulled because they where scared of it messing up the mount, so we didn't usually get anything over an 8 pointer.

LOL, I haven't read ANYTHING yet that says it affects the accuracy, SO I guess it's whether you want to waste the time doing it or not. Looks like I have been!
-
Dang redkneck, wouldn't want to get on your bad side. That's good question hoosier, I can't think of anything either. I have the same problem too.

I love watching that show. Seem like a bunch of quality guys! What did Phil say, "Terry went after the bucks, and I went after the ducks?"

I align my broadheads with my vanes also. I read some where that it allows for a more stable arrow flight. I had a guy tell me to align them opposite of your fletchings, and it would be more stable, LOL, ya right. Apparently he's never tuned a 3 blade broadhead before, even adjusting the nock a little will increase the accuracy on an arrow. FYI, you don't want helicals, go with offset or straight fletching, makes a BIG difference!

Sounds familar, two things, doe grunts to pull the does in and a drag rag to pull the bucks in, those are the only two things I know other than setting up on a travel route!
-
I've had my best luck in December, I grunted in BOTH bucks and grunted in another one this past weekend. Alot of hunters have put the grunt tube up, but I've come to find out that since the rut is done and most the does have been bred, that the bucks are still cruzing for the younger does, and they've already established their dominancey so they come in looking to run another buck off. In essence, the competition for the few remaining does in heat go WAY UP. That's just a philosophy, I've never heard of any hunting shows talk about it, but I've filled two tags with mature bucks using it. P.S. Food sources in return are where the does are going to be hitting, so like the guys above said, food sources are always a good place. I hunt CRP thats close to a wheat field, so I'm hitting their coridor, or travel route.

I currently own 2 Hoyts, 2003 Hoyt HavocTec, and 2010 Hoyt Maxxis 35. Love em both, I have shot beside a Mathews, and the noise difference was pretty distinct, of course I have string, cable, and limb savers, along with putting teflon tape on ALL the screws that go on or into the bow. My Maxxis is WAY smoother than my Cam 1/2, but it's a parrallel limb bow too, big difference in my opinion. I don't know if I helped or not, but that's from my experience.

I don't think it'd be an eagle, their not aggile enough to take a hawk, we have eagles that migrate down here with the ducks, they'll nab a duck off the water or wounded ones. We winged a mallard once, and when we found it, it looked like someone had fillet the breast out, and the hunters said it was more than likely a raptor. Flying into a highlines is highly possible too, I know they say that's a problem with Prairie Chickens!

Heard an awesome story last year. A falconer was hunting ducks with his falcon, and it made a dive on a duck, the hunter said he walked over to where he saw the bird fall, and something else that fell a little ways away, and the falcon had completely severed the head off the ducks body, I don't know if that's what it would have been, but a possiability! Pretty cool story I thought though!

I don't know, someone commented on it, so I chimed in.

I haven't seen any rut activity. I think we're in pre rut. Last weekend the bucks where still together.
-
I just had a friend get back from McAlester, he shot a heck of a 9 pointer. He said he came into a snort wheeze, so I'm thinking their starting pre-rut!
-
So question, do you think it's funner than coon hunting? Again, have you ever climbed up a big oak tree with a 22 revolver trying to kick a coon out? I'm sure you've read Where the Red Firn Grows?
-
Diddo, then that's when I see how accurate my +50 yrd pins are, j/k!
-
I haven't seen anything chasing, just harrassing. I've been having the same reaction where I hunt. There's a nice 9 pointer, I've grunted at him, but he won't have anything to do with me. I grunted Saturday morning mixed with a rattle pack, there he was, a bigger 8, came straight to me, but the dang deer feeder spook em when it went off. So note, one reason he's not responsive might be because there's more dominant buck, hopefully bigger! Here in north central OK, it's usually the second week in November when the rut is hitting.
-
Congrats, I agree with db, that's on my list too! We have a fur season, so we can't get one before Dec 1. Which the way luck plays, it is usually before that when the opportunity comes.

I keep in contact with the landowners I hunt on. I have never ran anyone off someone elses property, I don't feel like I have the authority to, even though I've been told who's allowed to hunt. I feel like if I was to, I'd be over stepping that boundry. I just contact the owner and let them know. Lets them keep the authority but, gives them a piece of mind when they feel like someone is watching out.
