He's a nine, never was able to see him after being killed, but heard he scored 172ish.

That's funny you said that, sitting at my office at 9 a.m. Two bucks and one doe, the buck walked right in behind the doe, and another one in the tree line. Broad daylight, it might have started!

I was stationed there from June of 2006 till September. I was a training cadre, or coyote as we put it, for Mojave viper. It was integrated with CAX for a 30 training op for pre-deployment. The team I was attached to did SIM rounds, 9mm rounds tipped with paint balls.

MAN, you have one positive attitude, if it wasn't for having such an awesome command, it would have really sucked. I did take my 270, I don't know if the gun shop is there on main street in Yucca, but he re-did my stock, and fixed my magazine plate. I bet there's some AWESOME predator calling out there, and a TON of BLM land. Go to Joshua Tree national forrest, and they have paplets of BLM lands around there, there's quite a bit! I did find some, tried calling, didn't have much luck, later found out that it was for shotgun only, believe due to dessert bighorn.

Good ole 29 stumps, was there for a 120 day TDY. I'd say looking to Arizona for over the counter mulie tag or Big Bear.

Where at in southern CA, I was stationed there for four years. Toward the end I actually had some time to hunt, on base of course there at Pendleton. I have been to two bow shops, one in Escondido, the other in Mirmar. As far as I could see, it was TOTALLY different than huting whitetail, scrub mulies is what they called them. I would focus around water, seemed like that was a limiting factor out there!
-
What is different, is I have been lucky to get permission to hunt private land in southern KS, I have been hunting this area for several years, with constant hunting creating a lack of pressure from poachers, I am starting to see some of the deer make it, meaning I get to see them grow. Another question, how many mature bucks have you seen with a pot belly during rut running does? If you'd like I could post a couple pics of deer, I pretty certain of the age. This buck was a running mate to a mature 6.5 yr old buck I shot off public land, so he's every bit a 5.5 or better, thinking better because a hunter had a pic of him several years before and he was a 14 STUD!
-
If you read, the indicators you guys where also talking about, pot belly, roman nose, ever see a deer that stays on corn, soybean, and milo diet? EVERY buck I've seen this year, decent, had a pot belly and roman nose, nice racks. Their NOT 4.5 or 5.5 year old deer!

I'm in east kansas wondering if anyone had seed rut activity

Almost every year, second or third week in November, no chasing, big boys just cruising of morning. -
Here's some more info. How Accurate is Aging Deer on the Hoof?
-
That's a good philosphy, but I hunt in souther KS, within 2 miles, there was soybeans, milo, and corn. Most of the bucks I have seen have pot bellies, and a roman nose, and I'm pretty sure their not 5 1/2 for the simple fact I've passed em up last year! 4 1/2 maybe, more likely 3 1/2. I don't believe individuals can age on the hoof as accurately as they'd like to believe, for the simple fact, there's way more variables playing into effect than what they know. 3/4 of the shows, where their aging deer on the hoof is set in a controlled enviroment.Take these for example, you'd say the middle one is obviously older because of the mass, and signactly larger skull, right? Wrong, their all 3 1/2 olds. They all come from the same area, so nutrient does not have alot to do with it. Now hunter's that have hunted their areas long enough to get a good managment program, will have a good idea what there is in the area, simply because you've hunted it the past 10 years. Trail cam pics, passing them up, will kind of let you get a feel on what's in the area. I worked a check station pulling jaw bones on opening weekend, 3/4 of the hunter's KNEW how old the buck was, but GO AHEAD, and pull it. Well, pretty much all of em was wrong. BTW, if you don't think he has mass, his H1 and H3 on his left beam measures 5 1/2 inches, meaning the circumference between his G2 and 3 is the same as his base.
-
I have a question, other than mature, how do you know how old he is? I'm pretty sure out of all the wildlife classes offered never attended one that taught how to age a deer on the hoof, did take one on tooth wear, and there's still questions about that method.

AH, OK, I don't know what the rules and regulations have to do with whether the rut is on the way or not. Everything is posted on ODWC website, including harvest results from McAlester.

I was wondering if you guys have seen any rut activity yet
abrown replied to hunter109's topic in Deer Hunting
I have seen 4 different bucks, not a one reacted to a grunt or snort wheeze, I have seen two different scrapes, but I'm pretty sure it's the little guys making them. You have to hit the pre-rut first! Hunting the rut sucks, cause they get with a doe, your done, pre-rut, they come in ticked off, looking to fight, usually REALLY CLOSE! The majority of my bucks are killed during pre-rut, their cusing, making rubs, getting REAL territorial. You grunt, and they come in on a string straight to you. -
I hunt in northern OK, and southern KS. I have seen 4 good bucks, one a dandy! I grunted, rattled, snort wheezed, and nothing! I saw a nice 10 come into a food plot and snort wheeze at a 4 pointer, and had an 8 snort wheeze at a 6 on a deer feeder. I guess it's how they show their aggression, and time of season does not have much to do. We have about another week or so, they should start reacting to grunts and rattling. I head to McAlester wednesday, hoping to hit the pre-rut, they've only harvested 1 P&Y so far.

I gut mine where they lay. Main reason is to get them cooled down, sooner the better! I also don't want to worry about dealing with a gut pile at home. I take mine to the processor's, I have never saw a deer that was not field dressed. With that being said, we don't have bears here, that would defiantly be a deal breaker here, unless I had a bear tag!

I have shot nothing but Hoyt, love em, but one bow I'd look into would be the Elite. I heard them advertise that they have a Lifetime warranty that carries with the bow, and if ANYTHING goes wrong due to manufacturing, like limbs bust, they would overnight ship them to the nearest archery shop. That's a heck of warranty to put on a bow! I wish Hoyt and Mathews would back their products like that. Although I have had new limbs put on a Hoyt, shouldn't have, but did just in case. It didn't cost anything.

I love Wasp BOSS SST, fly pretty much like your field tips. There fixed blades made for high performance bows. The chisel tip is sharper than muzzy's, and solid SS.

I'm usually in a stand 2-3 days a week. I work on a lake, so I can usually be in a stand within 30-45 minutes of leaving work, that is if my wife pics our daughter up. KS isn't that far either.
-
I tried Copehagen once, well actually twice, I was going to take a pretty good pinch of it, and my friend highly advised me to go lower or I'd be throwing my gutts up. I took his advice, good flavor, just needed something to keep me awake while standing post.
-
I like a flextone grunt tube also. I usually use doe grunts during early season, that's how I shot my doe this year, and I've shot several doe using one. The Primos hands free call is the one I've had the most luck with doe grunts. Pre-rut is going to be by far the best time to call, since the does have not quite went into heat, and the bucks are getting VERY territoral. I've grunted at bucks with does, they just look around and stick with the lady, can't say I don't blame em!

I would just contact your state biologist. As far as bachelor groups go, I had four bucks come in, two of them where NICE. It obviously depends where your located. Alot of times doe will bed their fawns down, and leave them, then come back to them later. So it is a good possabliity they still have em, or their either just barren does. Again your local biogist would have a good idea. All the does here have their fawns with them. Usually your 1.5 old bucks are alone, because they've just been booted by their mother out of the doe hurd. It was thought for a long time that inbreeding would accure with a large doe hurd, but found out that the does usually run the bucks off after a certain age. Kind of cool how nature takes care of itself.

Man, I've missed out! I've been shooting a Hoyt sense 1997 or so, I believe. Was Mathew around then? I can pretty well name every Hoyt I've owned. The first one was a bow my neighbor sold me, then Striker II, HavocTec, and Maxxis. EVERY person I've shot with has ALWAYS commented on how quiet they've shot, MAINLY your Mathews shooters. Jessica, as far as women shooting, well I'll brag ANY day, that's who taught me how to shoot was my next door neighbor, and one of my teachers. She was pretty good when she competed!

I shot a doe, I just accidently deleted the pic on my phone moving it to a new album, I'll get the pics restored soon, and get it in. I did not get a pic of me and deer, guess that's not good either. I don't see how I can take a pic of myself and the deer at 8:00 p.m., and no one is around to take it, it's warm out, and the deer needs to get to the cooler.

Mathews? Oh you mean THAT OTHER bow. right? LOL, add up all the years the other bow companies have been in business, and it still wouldn't equal the length of time Hoyt's been in business, the only one close would be Bear. I don't know anything about the Creed, most of the guys I know have the Z7. I'm sure it's a good bow, pretty sure all the companies are good, it's just preference. As far as a 1 pin system, Cam Hanes uses it, so it can't be too bad.
