Bullet Holes! Paper Tuned

Paper tuned the bows yesterday. The first arrow shot was a bullet hole, on my bow! Too cool! Got about 200 shots with a new string and cable and figured its shot in. Peep stays in place with no rotation so I figured it was time. Actually I got bullet holes with seven different arrows. This year I got the RS Nock Level kit and a shelf level, and a bow vise. Once in the vise and level, this allowed me to set the nock in the correct position with the rest. Needless to say, it made the arrow dead on with no adjustments needed! Absolutely a must for the do-it-yourselfer! ;)

Got Kaitlyn's bow out just see how far off it was. Her bow had a low and right tear. I know her arrows are spined too stiff, Cabela's Carbon Hunters 55/70. But was able to correct it with a few simple moves of her rest. We will be going out tonight to do a final test as well.

Its time to break out the broad heads anyways. :cool:

i got a new bow this past Feb. and i've been thinking about paper tuning it. although, i shoot a whisker biscuit and i was playing around with it ready to paper tune it and the allen wrench slipped. i stripped the head of one of the bolts to it. i was mad to say the least...lol....but i just have to see if i can find a replacement at a hardware store now. i'll then try again.

It's always good to paper tune but the ultimate test is to see if the broadheads hit in the same spot. If you have a winner record the measurements of the bow so you can come close to dupilcating them again when you change strings and cables. Axle to axle, tiller, brace height. wheel alignment, limb adjustment, draw weight, nock height, centershot, arrow height above the arrow shelf,etc. Check this occasionally as it will change as the strings wear. I just checked mine and found that the upper wheel was not aligned anymore and I need to put 2 full turns on the right hand leg of the buss cable. Remember a bow is always a work in progress. It's almost like it's alive sometimes. Scary thought though!!:D

Hey life I think you mean minor move of your rest. If you move the sight the field points will be hitting left.

Actually I moved the entire sight over one line. Been shooting FT's and BH's, hitting the same. The difference between FT's and BH's were only 2-3 inches. But after seeing this again, I believe I missed something here!

Now I think I been doing something wrong here! I thought after you paper tune that you need only to move your sight slightly to group them both. Because that is what I have done. Now after looking again at a few web sites, I think I might have to get back out and re-do this all over! Arrg!!!! Maybe Ill move it back and move the rest, paper tune again, then try the BH's.

Bad thing is, the BH's are hitting where I want them! I might just leave it be until the season is over, what do you think?

I don't want to sound critical about what anyone is using when it comes to broad heads, but I have never had a problem when it come to hitting the same mark with broad heads as I do with field points. Now I have not tried every broadhead on the market, but if there are broadheads that shoot like the field point, both mechanical and fixed blade, wouldn't it make sense to check them out before messing with a setup that is shooting bullet holes when paper tuning? I know this may open a large can of worms, but if one head shoots perfect and another head shoots off, then isn't it something with the head and not the bow? Now I have heard of times when someone was shooting aluminum arrows and the insert was not perfectly aligned with the arrow or the arrow was bent a little to cause a different flight when shooting broadheads compared to field points, but with carbons I have not heard of this happening. A buddy of mine was shooting his bow and hitting it good. Put on HIS broadhead and dropped down a few inches and off to one side. He changed to a mechanical I had on hand and hit just as he did with the field point. Is it the bow? The set up? or the broadhead that caused it? I think it is the broadhead. So Please someone tell me why change a setup that shoots bullets holes on paper with field points when a different broadhead may do the trick?

I am not a big fan of mech heads unless turkey hunting. Papertune and broadhead tune are 2 different things. Mainly what you are doing when broadhead tuning is micro adjusting your rest to where the broadheads aren't plaining as much but rather flying the same path as your field points. Fixed blades are a little more critical of this compared to a mech because of the diameter of the head. Think of it like this......If your arrow was a jumbo jet and the nose was tilted down slightly then more air is pushing it down because it is hitting the top of the nose. If it is flying level then the air is evenly distributed and it will fly straight. That is just an example of the planing effect. Same goes for right and left.........If the centershot is a hair left of what it should be the arrow with the broadhead is going to shoot left of the field point because the blade is catching air and pushing it left.

As you said with your friend inserts aren't always square and that cam happen with aluminums and carbons. That is the exact reason I use a G5 ASD to square up both ends of the arrow and I spin test each shaft to make sure the tip is without any wobble. I also index my cock vane to the one of the blades on the broadead mainly so that each shaft is uniform. I haven't found a bow yet that won't shoot broadheads and fieldpoints together. Simply I want my bows to be shooting the same hole so no matter while shooting at a target or a deer I am confident that I will be hitting the same spot without moving my sites. Normally once you get it set you can change fixed heads and they will hit the same spot.

BTW- Your buddy could have shot those fixed heads out of his bow. If they were a few inches low then his nock point was high. He could have moved his rest up or his nock down just a small amount and been fine. If the bow was perfectly tuned when he bought it and cams in time I would say that more than likely the nock point was always off or it was a case of string stretch.

I understand why and what is going on when some one tunes their bow / broadhead combination. What doesn't make sense to me is why some broadheads, fixed blade not mechanical, can shoot the same as the field points do and some can't. There must be something better in the design of the broadhead for flight than one that doesn't fly the same. Why not switch to a better designed broadhead from one that doesn't fly as good?

I have been using one by American BroadHead Company... Sonic Pro.

The Sonic Fury is the smaller head they make, but the Pro version is a 1" cut on contact blade. They fly just like the field points do.

Some of the guys on here tried them I shot a couple of small game animals with them but in the end I was worried about blade retention on the ferrul and I knew these heads would be a one shot head more than likely. I found out that I was right first time I shot one into my target and one of the blades bent. I was using a foam target.

Finally got out tonight. Started at 10 yards, 20, 30, and 40 yards. Shot three arrows of each, field tips and broad heads. I set my block and yellow jacket side by side and shot the three arrows at each. All hit their mark. Not sure why they didn't move left? But hey I am not complaining! The Muzzy's were flying great! This is the best this bow has shot since I owned it.

Hutch, I am not arguing with you here! But I am trying to figure out why. If you paper tune with field tips and then have to move the rest to get broad heads and field tips to have the same impact. Isn't this defeating the purpose of paper tuning? If the arrows are coming out of the bow cleanly and straight, why not just move the sight? Because that is all I did, and they are hitting the same spot. I must be missing something here.

Wasn't trying to start an arguement. Some guys have good luck with paper. I never have.........I've never setup a bow straight out of the box, shot the field points, and then my bh be the same spot. Normally they are normally off by at least an inch or 2. Different heads fly differently..............alot of times a head with fly great when show out of a bow at 240 fps but move it up to 280 or so and it really shoots differently. I'm not saying papertuning can't work because there are guys that it works great for. I'm simply saying to be sure and check your bh against your fieldpoints at 20, 30, and 40.........and if need be don't be afraid to broadhead tune it. Papertune is a great starting point for myself and I do it to every bow I have. If I am hunting with it I broadhead tune and if I am going to use it as a target bow then I walkback tune it. Don't take it for granted that the papertune will do the trick.

Life, you wouldn't believe how many guys around here papertune and then just expect their broadheads to fly with their fp's. Most times they get clued in the first shot they get and then they want to blame the broadheads when in fact it is the guy that never checked to make sure.

BTW-Guys that are just moving their sites over to where the broadheads impact[especially if it is plaining very far] will find out that not all the pins will be perfectly in line. Their 20 will shoot dead on and then say the 30 will be left and 40 will be further left. That's because the further that arrow flys the more it is off course. 5 feet from the bow it may only be 1/16 left or right but out at 40 is is alot more.

Never said you were! I just didn't want you to think I was! ;) I was out again tonight, same thing. Bow shot great with both FT's and BH's! Some how I think maybe I just got lucky! But as I said before, I ain't complaining! :cool: But I researched broad head tuning, and have several web pages bookmarked! ;) But thanks for your input! That also goes for everyone! :cool:
