  1. Re: 300 WSM Reload Good stuff 280AI, thanks! I think I've decided on a Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 to replace what my Savage Model 16 came with. My only question is what do I need for rings and bases. I've only ever put on one other scope in my life and that was almost 20 years ago. I printed out the rings/bases info from www.shortmags.org, but is that all the info I need?
  2. Re: 300 WSM Reload 777 I'll let you know how I do. I reloaded 300 rounds of 9mm this past weekend, but you can almost buy factory loads for cheaper than I can reload them. Not the case with 300 WSM, however I need to get the dies. I bought three boxes of Federal ammo 180 gr softpoints just to get the rifle somewhat sighted in and get some shooting in. I'm scheduled to head out to MT next fall to hunt elk/mule deer. Figured by then I'll be setup with whatever my reloads will be. Thanks for the input AJ!
  3. Question for you reloaders. Now that I have purchased my 300 WSM I'm looking for a round to take on my elk/mule deer hunt next year. Any suggestions??
  4. Went out Saturday morning to do a little resident goose hunting and in a matter of about an hour 5 of us had 20 on the ground. I was a bit worried because we were fighting a bluebird sky, but we had three flights come in on the decoys and we downed 5, 10 and 5 respectively. Back home, geese cleaned in time to watch the Saturday NFL games. Lifes good!
  5. Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM Went to the Galyan's sale and picked up a Savage Weather Warrior in 300 WSM. Thanks for all the help...now I got to get to the range
  6. Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM So AJ what's your opinion on rifle and scope setup? I'm heading out with checkbook in hand this weekend. Are you shooting in IWLA Winter League? Starts Jan 9
  7. Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM Appreciate everyones input...looking forward to going to the Gun Store this weekend to see what they have
  8. Re: Austin & Halleck\'s are sweet!! I've never fired a A&H rifle, however I did hunt with a guy who was carrying one (420 with wood stock). I will tell you it was a beautiful gun, but VERY heavy
  9. Re: In the Market for a 300 WSM Thanks for the info. Recoil is no problem. I only have a .243 because I've never had cause to own anything bigger. I have fired 30.06 and 7mm Mag rifles in the past (borrowed from friends). I've done mostly blackpowder hunting over the course of the last 15 years or so (both .50 and .54 cal). I'm also a relatively large 6'3" 240 pounds -- no recoil I don't believe will be a problem. I'm torn between Winchester and Browning.
  10. Headed to MT next year for a Elk/Deer hunt and need to purchase a rifle for the trip. Largest center fire I own is a .243, so I'm in the market for a 300 WSM. Be interested in getting some insight and lessons learned from those of you out there that have purchased a 300 WSM
  11. Re: Firing a squibb shot to foul? Because of the style of hunting we do in MN I can't count on having the time to clean the barrel in between shots so I will foul the barrel by firing a couple of caps and a partial load of powder first thing in the morning before putting in my initial load. Since I know my gun shoots slightly different if it's a clean barrel or fouled, I now sight my gun in with a fouled barrel. It does force me to clean my gun at the end of each day regardless of whether I took a shot or not. I took two shots this year and took two deer both out past 70 yards.
  12. Re: Owner\'s Manual Problems I am an A5 guy and that's probably part of the problem. I'd bought the Beretta (20 gauge) for my son. If I could find an old A5 (20 gauge) I would hav bought it. The Beretta operates quite a bit different than my A5s so in aviation language I'm suffering from negative habit transfer. Beretta did send me a survey and when I filled it out I expressed my disappointment with the manual. Gun shots great though once I got it on the range. I went 23/25 the first round of trap I shot with it. Happy Holidays!!
  13. I purchased a Beretta AL 390 (20 gauge) a few months back. To make a long story short I found the Owner's Manual that came with the gun VERY uninformative, almost confusing. I've been around guns all my life and have a pretty good idea how they work, but I always read the "book" before I operate. The problem this time it didn't help. Some of the features of the gun I found out be accident and even then trying to go back into the book to read more about it I couldn't. I'm not a genius, but I have a Masters in Engineering, and if I'm having trouble I'd guess I'm not the only one. I'd like to hear what others have to say.
  14. Re: Powerbelts - thoughts? I've shot 295 hollow points for 3 or 4 years now and have taken a number of deer with it both whitetail and muley. I've had a number of bullets deflect off of ribs at 70+ yards that did not pass completely through. However the internal damage was significant and the animals did not go far after the shot. I've found a number of slugs in the outer skin that were approximately 1/5 the size of the original slug. I didn't weight the slug, so it may have been compressed, but it appeared more that the upper 4/5ths of the slug was gone. I'll continue to use Powerbelts, easy to load, good accuracy and they enable me to fill my freezer each year.
  15. Re: Just Back From The Range Before I left for MN I'd been to the range and my final eight shots at 100 yards (open sights) had six in the bull and two just on the edge. Sure was nice going into the season with that confidence of hitting where you're aiming. As you read in my other post - two nice does fell to my Blackdiamond this year. Good Hunting and Good Luck!!
  16. Re: Filled Out in MN Also had an opportunity while I was there to take a couple of pheasants and a Hungarian Partridge. I may need to think about getting a blackpowder shotgun
  17. Linked up with two of my brothers and my Dad last week in MN. Our emphasis during the hunt is more social and filling the freezer than on trophies. We took 2 days and 3 hours (about 20 miles of walking) to bag our four deer. We ended up with two small bucks and two nice does. Perfect for filling everyones freezer. I made two nice shots on does out 70 yards (+/-) with open sights. Very happy with how the T/C Blackdiamond performed again this year. Found the Powerbelt 295 gr slug in the one doe. She was standing 75 yards away took her right behind the front shoulder, however it glanced off a rib and ended up coming out just in front of the last rib on the other side. Wasn't much left of the slug which I found in the skin on the far side. She was standing perfectly sideways to me, meaning the slug had to deflect almost a foot to the left once it hit the rib. Had to laugh when I called my 9 year old son who was still back in VA. His first question when I told him we'd been successful getting our deer was, "Dad did you save the hearts?" The boy loves eating his wild game. He's taking a heart sandwich in his lunch to school tomorrow . What a great time was had by all. The trophies we took this year were more in the joy of hunting with my brothers and Dad as well as the retelling of old stories that we've heard numerous times before and still laughing at them. Good hunting!
  18. Just got back from my muzzle loader hunt with my brothers and Dad in MN...2 day and 3 hours after beginning our season we had our four deer. Nothing big, but it was a very rewarding hunt and we all have venison to last us till next year. I feel sorry those folks who have never experienced the socializing that takes place during a group hunt. For me it's what makes any deer we get a real trophy.
  19. Re: Buckshot question My opinion is to forget about the buckshot and go strictly with the slugs. I think your testing demonstrated the limitations of buckshot quite accurately. You hit them with a slug and there is no doubt.
  20. Re: .222 remington I've used my Model 700 .222 for years to hunt fox and coyotes in Minnesota and I absolutely loved it. You've got a great gun, enjoy it!!
  21. Re: 30-06 Set Up?????????? Hey AJ, if you're looking for ideas on what to turn one of those Rem 700 into here's an idea. Turn it into ME.
  22. Re: BP bullet for Black Bear I've owned a T/C BD for a number of years now and once I got hooked up with Powerbelt bullets I've never gone back to anything else. I've had very good success with the accuracy and the performance of both the 295 gr and (even better) with the 348 gr. I use 110 gr of Pyrodex Select behind both bullets. Happy Hunting!
