Re: T/C Omega question? AJ like always I think you are right on. Ya, you get used to the right info with AJ

Re: I need Browning parts It still should have some kind of brass friction system in it. The one found in the Light is different than the Mag. But even with the "standard" there will need to be something. If there isn't any rings present then that is probably why you are cracking your front stock. Browning also has a Customer Service center on their website that will answer your question as to what your specific gun should have. Good luck! That's a great old gun - I've got 5 (four FN) of them but only my 16 gauge is that old. Let me know what you find out.

Re: How long to hang a deer? We usually skin them within 24 hours - quicker if the temp is above 40 or below 20. We prop the chest cavity open while hanging to promote cooling. We'll then let them hang for a day or two to ensure they have cooled down -- since we do our own butchering we find that it is easier to bone the meat out if the meat is a touch frozen (ice crystals present not solid)

Re: T/C Omega question? All three brothers had the same opinion and that was that the sights almost seemed too low what should have been the normal shooting position on the stock. I'd asked my brother whether he'd had anything modified he said no. Like I said he has a thumbhole stock that has a pretty high comb, maybe it's just us.

For all of you Omega owners I've got a question. This past week I was able to shoot my brothers Omega and found it VERY difficult to get a good sight picture. I seemed to have to lean my head way out over the stock in order to obtain a good sight picture. Definitely a lot different than my T/C Black Diamond, which needless to say performed flawlessly again this season. He has a laminated thumbhole stock if that makes any difference. Anyone else find this to be true??

Re: I need Browning parts RangerClay - if you go to the Browning web link above you'll see an exploded view of the parts you should be seeing. If you don't have a Light 12 then you've got a Magnum (does it take 3 " shells?). The friction rings are a set of rings that arrest the recoil following a shot, so that the barrel doesn't recoil too violently. This is what causes your cracked stock. When you take the front stock off and remove the barrel you should find ABOVE the spring a stack of rings that create the necessary friction to slow the barrel down during recoil. These rings can be added or removed depending on the load you are shooting. Better to start out with too much than not enough is my motto. Also don't lubricate the magazine tube. If you do this it eliminates the benefit the rings are providing you.

Got back from spending a week in MN yesterday. We had a party of five (me, three brothers, and Dad) and we filled our final tag last Saturday. Final tally was three with antlers and two without. None of the bucks were wall hangers, but being the final gun season in MN most of the "Wall Hangers" in farm country are either in hiding or at the taxidermist. I shot two of the bucks, one was a spike and the other was a small 6 point. Should have been an 8, but two points were broken off. I'll post some pictures as soon as I get them processed. Had an absolute great time hunting with my family. Hadn't seen my brothers in almost two years. Only problem was that the wind speed had more digits than the temperature :-) Most days it was in the single digits temperature wise and the wind was up around 20-30 mph. Makes for a tough hunt, especially since there wasn't any snow.

Re: I need Browning parts RangerClay - I'd try the Browning website or Brownells. I've ordered parts for my A5 from the Browning website http://www.browning.com/services/gunpartsprices/index.asp One word of caution however, and that is if you are shooting heavy duty shells in your A5 without enough friction rings you'll continue to crack from front stock. If you are shooting Magnum shells you'll need to have all your friction rings installed. If your A5 is a Magum then there should be three bronze friction rings and two friction pieces installed.

I have a good friend that inherited a Winchester Model 1886 in 45-70. The problem is it's been packed in grease and buried for a number of years/decades. The rifle is suffering from some rust on the barrel -- any suggestions on how to proceed to clean it up without damaging the gun? Or would you just recommend taking it to a gunsmith?

Re: Breech plug problem I've never had a problem with my BD, but I do what LETMGROW says and I use a liberal amount of grease on the threads of both the breach plug and nipple, careful not to get any on the business end of either. DO NOT over torque them when you put them back in the barrel! It isn't required. I hand tighten and then put the wrench on and snug it. That's it. Even after a good long day at the range where I may shoot 20+ shots, I've never had a problem getting the plug out.

Re: All Sighted In Made a slight mistake - legal caliber is 40 cal in a rifled barrel (45 cal in a smoothbore). Has to be open sights - no smokeless powder.

Re: not until dec Heading to MN this coming Friday in prep for Saturday's ML opener. Joining up with 3 brothers and my Dad for a week of deer / pheasant hunting. Can't wait!!

Re: so sick to my stomach...(wounded my first deer) Sorry to hear about the loss. Remember it is when this kind of thing doesn't bother you that you have to start to worry. You do whatever is in your power to recover the animal, that's all you can do. No matter how careful you are sometimes it's just not meant to be. It can happen to anyone.
-
Re: All Sighted In Yes you can use a black powder pistol, but it has to be 45 cal or better and it has to be single shot and only be able to be loaded from the muzzle.

Re: best day ever!! I agree. Used to do a lot of red fox and coyote hunting with a Model 700 in .222 -- absolutely loved it.

Re: Savage ML About dang time you weighted in on this one AJ!! Good hearing from you. Happy Thanksgiving! 1 week till I go to MN for their opening ML season. Got a license for small game too (pheasants, ducks and geese)

Re: Deer / Car Collisions Calm down...it's just a discussion. My point is that as long as you take steps to manage the animals on your property you have nothing to worry about. But that is exactly my point. You are obviously a land owner that has a plan.

Re: Severe Brag Alert I just doesn't get any better than that!!! Congratulations!!

Re: I can officially hunt ducks! Woohoo! I'd posted this earlier in a different thread. It's a good recipe...if you want all the details about it I'll send them to you. I ran across a good little duck breast recipe the other day. Have used it a couple times already this fall and it is really good. Calls for cutting the breast fillets into two slices each (done by pressing the breast against the cutting board and running a sharp fillet knife through the breast fillet) thus making two thin slabs. Cook butter and diced onions until soft, add the duck fillets that have been salt/peppered. Cook a couple of minutes on each side and then remove the duck. Then add brandy and mushrooms to the pan and cook a few minutes. Then add the duck breasts back to the pan until done (Don't overcook!!!).

Re: Deer / Car Collisions The area I'm talking about is a WELL KNOWN problem and yet Locals continue to hit deer there. LOTS of deer! Let me clarify something and that is I'm not asking the land owner to be responsible for the deer -- I'm asking them to be responsible for their actions. If you create an environment that holds a large number of deer, I believe it is your responsibility for managing their numbers. I believe if you hunt your property or allow others to do so, that would be considered a management tool. If I'm not mistaken don't property owners out west have to have some kind of game management plan?

Re: Savage ML That's correct, but they've been that way for a couple of years now. Not a real popular attribute for many of the ML traditionalists. Don't know if AJ uses his with smokeless powder or not.
-
Re: Savage ML I'm waiting for AJ to say something, because I know he really likes his Savage ML. I think his is a couple years old though.

Re: New Air Freshener I LOVE it!! Always have. Don't know if it's the smell or the flood of great hunting memories with family and friends it seems to stimulate that makes it so good.
