Minn hunters that scored so far..........
hoosierhunter replied to hoosierhunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Re: Minn hunters that scored so far.......... The bucks up in Duluth were running noses down and I had one in the brush grunting, but unforunately he didn't show himself..... -
Re: DOGS HARASSING DEER I would go with the approach of kindly asking the dog owners to please contain their pets on their property. I would make mention of some "other" people have shot dogs for this same reason and that he wouldn't want to see that happen...Since it was the first time you saw them I wouldn't have shot them, but if it continues to be a problem and nothing is done by authorities or owners then the only solution I see to the problem is to eliminate the source of the problem......We had a experience with this about 10-15 years ago and the people were warned and nothing was done....The final straw came when the dogs got a big buck down by our house but couldn't kill him......Needless to say the deer wasn't the only thing that bit the dusk that evening.......That is something That I hate to see happen being as I'm a huge dog lover, but people need to control their animals.....If you can't keep track of your animals then maybe it's time to evaluate not having them...... Well I'm a native from Indiana but moved to Owatonna a month ago for a job. I got a chance this weekend to take a trip up to Duluth to rifle hunt with a co-worker of mine.......Well Saturday was uneventful as I sent three hours dragging my buddies' dads deer out of the woods. He shot a 7 pointer while walking in the woods and go figure he killed him all the way back....Saturday night we didn't see a single thing and at this point I'm a little discouraged b/c I have heard so much about up here but hadn't seen a deer yet.....So Sunday morning rolls around and this is do or die time for m buddy and me. Well the morning started off just like the others with no deer showing up....It was 9:30 and now I'm beginning to wonder if Minn even has deer at this point...Just as that thought crossed my mind...I see a monster doe coming through the pines fast....She gets the the clearing and throws her nose up in the air....Go figure she comes from downwind of me.....Well for how she came out it looked like she was being pushed by a buck, but with her getting ready to blow and run I decided that one in hand is better than two in the bush and I took her....I shot her with a 30-06 at 25 yards and she literally dropped right there and didn't kick at all!!!I hit her in the front shoulder and literally exploded her heart....When I field dressed her the heart was gone....Anyway she dressed out a big 160 pounds...A absolute tank.....So everyone from Minn let me know how your first weekend went......

choke question for slugs.........
hoosierhunter replied to hoosierhunter's topic in Shotguns & Accessories
Re: choke question for slugs......... dave, thanks for the help.....I know about not running sabots through the smooth bore...I bought some cheap federals to run through it....As for the tube I'm just gonna stop at cabela's up here in MN before we head up....Again thanks for the help.... -
I have a verona semiauto with several choke tubes but i forgot them at home and can't get them in time and don't have my directions. If I take my choke tube out will I ruin the threads in my barrell....Help needed asap as I leave tonight for the trip......So the question is can I run rifled slugs through my smooth bore barrell without the choke tube and not screw it up......

Re: Muzzy Broadhead question Here's my take.......This is my first year shooting Muzzy and I have had a great and a terrible experience. First I'm shooting a Fred Bear G2XL pulling 68 LBS. with PSE Carbon Force Dominator 300's with Muzzy 125's.......Im shooting constistently from 275-279 FPS. Now here's the stories....My first deer shot was a big eight from 7 yards....I hit him square in the front left shoulder slightly quartering away. On that buck I only got 7-9 inches of penetration and lost that buck.....He ran 450 yards before I backed out for the night and went back the next day to find nothing.....He never bedded down and put out alright blood, then spilled blood for 75 yards, then dried up in about 5 yards........This was absolutely crazy to me seeing how close this deer was and not getting any penetration....The next deer came the next night and was a doe at 15 yards straight broadside.....Again another shoulder shot that passed through the left shoulder through the brisket and out the other shoulder!!!Complete pass through!!!!This deer ran 40 yards and was done.......(BTW didn't mean to take shoulder shot on second deer, I did mean to on first one b/c that was the only shot and I was confident in my setup, but obivously it didnt' do the job) Now after a very heated debate with some people about not being about to hit a deer in the shoulder from that close and getting good penetration(I still think I can) I took the broadhead that I killed the doe with and shot it into a CEMENT block, not a cinder block CEMENT block.........That broadhead stuck right in the block and didnt break!!!!! So I guess my take on this is that Muzzy is just fine along with a lot of other boradheads out there....The thing that matters most is shot placement.......I truely believe that part of the hit is luck of the draw when you hit bone.......I really think that if I hit that buck 99 more times with that same shot that I would kill that deer almost 100% of the time.....Sometimes things just don't go as planned...... The only advice I would give you on broadheads is fixed blades over mechanical blades....I have seen way too many of my buddies lose deer due to malfunctions of mechanical blades versus fixed blades......Granted some fixed blades malfunction too, but not to the degree of mechanical blades.......Whatever you decide be confident if your setup....Even if it's as much as a mental thing make the switch.....Mental confidence affects the shot just as much as equipment....... I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO
hoosierhunter replied to fisherguy's topic in Bowhunting
Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO BTW that crack you heard was hitting a big bone.....It's more or a hollow thump when a deer isn't hit in the shoulder.............You might have hit a shoulder blade and it also depends on how high you were for terms of penetration angle.......... -
I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO
hoosierhunter replied to fisherguy's topic in Bowhunting
Re: I STUCK AN ABSOLUTE HOG TONIGHT!! WIFE SHOT ONE TO you made the right decision by backing out and waiting til morning.....I wish you nothing but the best in locating this deer........I also feel your pain a bit....Earlier this season I shot a big 8 at literally 7 yards in the front shoulder and didn't get enough penetration(only 6 to 8 inches) not to mention I shoot a fred bear G2XL pulling 70 lbs. with pse 300 dominators with muzzy 125 three fixed blades........My bow shoots 279 FPS.........I tracked him for about 400 yards that night before backing our and went back the next day and couldn't find him...It made me sick...It's the first deer I have lost in my 14 or 15 years of hunting.........I still can't figure out what happened b/c the next night I zipped a doe from 15 yards and passed through both shoulders on her(didn't mean for shoulder hit again, just confidence was a little shook)............Anyway the only thing to do now it give both deer the recovery effort they deserve........GL and let us know how it goes......... -
Re: Big Saskatchewan Muley (photos) I think its time to sit him on the edge and tell him to stay there and wait

Re: FIRST BOW KILL!!!! (240lbs & 8pts) not many people kill a deer that big their whole life and it's your first bow kill....It's something to be very proud of!!!

Re: Morning or afternoon? It depends on the time of the year for me....In early season I stick primarily to evening hunts due to the fact that deer are very patternable in the early season.....Once the rut starts though it can be any time event....... Also I hunt deep woods in the morning closer to the bedding areas and hunt field edges and known travel corridors to feeding areas in the evening........

Re: maximum range 33 yards, zipped him right through the boiler room. He never knew what hit him. He ran 40 yards and stopped then looked back, took two steps and down he went.
