Re: Cool Songs.....*LISTEN* If you like Nugent's Fred Bear then... Check out the Nuge's Hunt Music 2004 cd. It's only available at his website. It's got a couple versions of Fred Bear, I Just Want to go Hunting, Spirit of the Wild, Tooth Fang and Claw and more! It's worth every penny I spent on it.

Re: Sportsmansguide.com? I've never ordered from their catalogs. They have a store on sight at their headquarters and warehouse. Living close enough, I've gone to the store a few times. It's not the highest quality stuff in the land, but it is functional. The quality is not always the best, but the price is always right. I bought a pair of bdu style pants in the original DUcks Unlimited camo pattern and only paid $4.00 and they've lasted several years now. The deals in store are even better pricewise than what you can get through their catalogs. Think of them more as a "surplus" style store and you'll be happy with what you get. A lot of close-out and factory-seconds kind of stuff.

Re: Get the vote out for Bush!!!!! [ QUOTE ] People like that are probably all for suppressing certain voters based on their nationality or skin color. [/ QUOTE ] Slugshooter, this is borderline name calling, and is most definately stereotyping. Be a bigger person than that.

Re: how many bands My brother just emailed me and said his hen mallard was banded Sept 12, 2003 At Rochert, MN (Near Detroit Lakes, 60 miles East of Fargo/Moorhead). The info said it was hatched in 2002 or earlier. So to recap. Hen mallard was banded in Minnesota, then killed 400 miles away in Manitoba by a Minnesota hunter, and then returned to Minnesota a year after being banded here.

Re: how many bands I shot a snow goose in Manitoba two years ago that was banded. My brother shot a banded Hen Mallard this year in Manitoba. These were first bands for both of us in over 20 years of waterfowling. It's those darn hunters down south who seem to be killing all the banded birds!

I just got back from SW Manitoba a couple of days ago. I spent a week there with my Dad, Brother, and some friends of ours. I didn't keep track of the final numbers this year, but between seven of us we brought back over 40 geese and just over 70 ducks. In the part of the province we hunt, we normally don't get a lot of Canada geese, but this year we bagged more Canada's than we ever have, mostly the small Richardson's (lesser) Canadas. Though I did wack one dandy greater - all dressed out it wouldn't fit into a two gallon freezer bag. We ended up with about 16 Canadas and the rest were snow/blue geese. Including a triple I shot - three geese passed by, and I dropped all three with three shots fired. That earned me the honor of being labled a "Game Hog"! The duck hunting was better than the goose hunting, and we could have limited out (16 a piece) if we had really wanted to. We shot a lot of Mallards. We also took a bunch of green wing teal, and more canvas backs than we've shot in a long time. We hit a few pintails, but not as many as usual. A couple blue wing teal, and a bunch of spoonies (shovelers) that we decided to marinate, fry and eat in camp rather than bring home with us. We also got a couple gadwall, a redhead, and a ringbill and a couple of widgeon. (The variety of ducks in this area never fails to amaze me.) My brother got his first band ever. It came from a hen mallard. It was a relatively new band, probably this year's, but he'll find out when he calls it in. I was really surprised by the quality of the drakes we shot. The green wing teal and the spoonies had some of the nicest mature color I've ever seen. (Better than the GW Teal I had mounted last year.) The weather at the first part of the week was sunny but windy. By the end of the week it had turned much colder and was rainy. We shot birds every day that we hunted. Like Pallsonator, we celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving in our camp. Our tradition goes back to the very beginning when we started hunting up there 22 years ago. Waterfowling wasn't allowed on Sunday's then, so we hosted a Thanksgiving party and invited the family of the guy that owns our goose shack and all of his local relatives and their kids. We also invite the landowners who let us hunt their land. As the event has grown over the years we've had to increase the spread. It bagan with one big turkey and all the fixin's. It grew to two turkeys, then two turkeys and a ham. We make about 15-20 pounds of mashed potatos, and so much stuffing that we have to mix it in a trash bag, a gallon of corn, two or three onion pies (a local family delicacy) and more fruit pies than you can count. I think we had seven this year. One of the families that we always invite, raises turkeys for family and friends. Last year they told us to stop buying turkeys and they would have one ready for us when we arrived this year. The darned thing weighed in at 45 pounds ! Their biggest this year was a 48 pounder !! The only way to cook a bird that size without out quartering it is to grill it in a large wood-fired grill used for pig roasts. Man was that bird good eating. We didn't take many pctures this year. I know there was a few taken of the greater Canada I shot and the 45 pound turkey. I'll try to get those posted once I get copies of them.

Re: Need a good goose recipe One of my favorites: Clay's Gourmet CrockPot Goose Breast meat from one or two geese 16 oz fresh mushrooms sliced 1 medium (3") onion diced 4 stalks of celery diced 1-4 diced Hungarian Yellow peppers (OPTIONAL - these babies are HOT) 1 tbs salt 1 tsp black pepper 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1/2 of above soup can milk cut breasts into thirds, rinse and pat dry. Place on bottom of crockpot. Mix all other ingredients in large bowl then pour over meat in crock pot. Cook on low 8-10 hours. Serve over egg noodles or potatoes. The hungarian peppers are completely optional. I like them, but there too hot for my kids so I haven't added them when the kids are eating it. I've used 4 peppers and I've used one pepper. 4 is bout the max anyone can stand.

Re: Quiz...How smart are you? 23 correct! Question 5 is correct on older phones but many new phones now include Q and Z (PQRS=7, WXYZ=9).

Re: 25 ways to know you are canadian I get most of 'em, but living this close to the northern border gives me an advantage. Heck I understand the dialect and lingo a heckuva lot more than I do than from all y'all southerners! Which reminds me...only 17 days and counting 'til I'm in Manitoba for the annual 10 day father-son waterfowl whackathon!

Re: Went goose hunting... As Yosemite Sam would say...oooooohhh I hates when that happens! The other one that always gets me is when I'm watching the field of vision in front of me and my periferals, and out of nowhere a bird comes screaming over your head from behind low enough to drag his big orange swim flippers across the little button on top of your ballcap. I think they do it on purpose, kinda like when Tom Cruise buzzes the control towers in "Top Gun."

Re: Megaduck Challenge A visit to the National Waterfowlers' Registry's website indicates that they fell under so much pressure that they took the childish low-road and "took their ball and went home." Here's the only thing you find on their website that appeared to once have a great deal of information. NOTICE It has been made clear to us that our ability to obtain the needed information through the Freedom of Information Act may be hindered by those that hold the power to do so. What this means in regard to the FOIA and our abilities as citizens to access data through it remains very unclear. Therefore, we regret to inform you that effective immediately the $1,000,000 MEGADUCK CHALLENGE event is canceled. All memberships will be refunded in full and no prizes will be awarded. We appreciate the support of the many who heard the truth of what we were attempting to do. We encourage all our fellow waterfowlers to participate in selective harvest, to bring new hunters into the sport and to abide by the laws set forth to govern the tradition we all share.

Re: Megaduck Challenge This thing is so bad that many of it's corporate sponsors including RealTree are pulling out. Macks Prairie Wings has a statement on their website disassociating themselves from Megaduck. They also apologized for including Columbia Sportswear as a sponsor. Here's the statement from Macks: MACK'S CANCELED THEIR AFFILIATION WITH THE MEGADUCK CHALLENGE After further consultation with U.S. Department of the Interior regarding potential negative ramifications, Mack's Prairie Wings, Realtree and Remington are withdrawing any further support to the National Waterfowlers' Registry's MegaDuck Challenge event. Please note that Columbia Sportswear had not approved the use of its name or logo, and at no time did they offer or give any support to this promotion. We apologize to Columbia for this error. We have officially canceled any association with the NWR-MegaDuck offer and will not offer any means for registration. We extend a sincere apology to those we have offended. We will continue to demonstrate our strong commitment to all of our valued customers and friends in the field. Thank you, Deena Fisher If you read the details of the contest the odds of shooting a winning duck are atrocious. They are banding several ducks in each of the four flyways with individual code numbers. Then after the birds are realeased they will decide which four numbers (presumably one in each flyway) will be worth $250,000 each. So first you have to shoot a duck with a Megaduck band, then you have to beat the odds that the one you shot is one of the four who's number was selected to be the quarter million dollar "MegaDuck." The only way you could win a million in this contest is to shoot all four of the selected birds. Thank You RealTree for withdrawing your support of this abomination!! This is not the right way to go about luring people back into hunting.

Re: First duck of the season... Actually RTF, that's about average for the northern tier states. USFWS allowes states to open regular waterfowling season as early as September 21st. North Dakota, I think, opened on 9-21. But most other states listened to their hunters who wanted it to remain as close to the traditional "weekend closes to October 1st." Minnesota considered the 9-21 opener, but after pressure and outcry from hunters held off a week and opened this past weekend on 9-28. Last I heard most of the neighboring states also opened on the 28th.

You can find some good info on decoy spreads at DU's website. I've linked a section to freshwater marsh spreads that I think is most relevant for you. http://www.ducks.org/waterfowling/decoys/decoyspread_freshwater_marsh.asp Decoy placement can vary from one pothole to the next. Many factors include the size of the water you are on, wind direction, blind location etc. SOme small ponds only need to have a half-dozen decoys to be affective. It's important to provide some sort of landing strip in the direction of the wind. If you have a North wind, you'll want a north-south landing zone. Put your farthest decoys out at 35-40 yards from your blind. That way, you'll know that any bird in the decoys is in range. It's important to be flexible and ready to change. If the ducks are flying and they aren't giving your spread more than a glance, you need to make come changes. It could be adding or subtracting decoys in the spread. It could be reconfiguring the spread. Point is, if the spread is not working, get out there and rearrange. Good Luck!
