  1. Re: mule deer hunting All I am willing to say is that it is from a public land section of the Weminuche It is an area where I have seen some monster mule deer bucks. WAY up above treeline & at the fringes of the pines at drainage tops. Just like this one. If Elk tags keep going up...........I am switching over to hunting deer in Colorado LOL
  2. Re: mule deer hunting I have never had a mulie tag.........but I have run into some beauties while elk hunting open unit public land elk. Here is one I was able to get a picture of. We ran into him at 12,500 feet while stalking a 5x5 bull with cows. The bull was 3 drainages away..........but I had to stop & get pictures of this guy! Very tall. LOTS of stickers. Great mass. Just not real wide.I guess him at 28-29" wide inside. Wish I had a tag anyway!
  3. Re: Elk Rifle Dilema-Need help Never tried the Barnes. And I do not have a Barnes manual. What weights do they come in? How about velocities? My 700 is a bone stock BDL with 24" barrel. I don't need this gun to be a speed burner.........just an accurate hammer of Thor LOL If I am lucky enough to run into a bull from bayonet range to 300-400 yards, I want to be able to knock his lights out
  4. Re: Elk Rifle Dilema-Need help Dons 375 WBY might make me have back problems also I think I've decided on taking the 338. Now..........you guys think 225 grain or 250 grain partitions would be the way to go?
  5. Re: Elk Rifle Dilema-Need help Ok Don............Never enough. BUT for now I am good LOL
  6. Re: Elk Rifle Dilema-Need help I shoot alot. And I shoot all of the rifles mentioned equally well. Recoil is a non factor. I actually prefer the 2.5-8x power range over the 3.5-10. If I'd take my Ruger I'd most likely switch the scope. Elk are BIG animals. I'd have no problem shoting them out to 300 +/- yards even with the scope set at 2.5x. And in all honesty.........I never shot any big game animal with any scope turned up past 6x. Of the 3, the Remington has a slight weight advantage. But even at that it just over 8 pounds scoped. So .......still no light weight. I am going to pick up some 225 grain & 250 grain Nosler partitions & see what kind of load I can develop. If I can get the group down to 1 MOA from the bench........I think the BDL will get the nod. I have a few months to work this issue through before I have to commit. This will be fun Hey snap.........good luck out there. I will be coming home before your hunt begins. I hope we both end up with some elk to take pictures of! I'll have to pass on that 270 WSM. I already have more magnums than I need. As this post begins to point out LOL.
  7. I drew a first season rifle tag for unit 75 in Colorado. Time to start geting in shape & shooting. I can't decide which rifle to use. I have 3 that fit the bill for elk handily but can't decide. Which would you guys use & why? 1. Ruger Mark II M77 300 win mag with 3.5-10 Leupold Varix-III. Shooting 180 gr factory coreloks into .75" 2. Weatherby Mark V 300 WBY mag with Leupold Varix-III 2.5-8x. Shooting 200 grain nosler partiotion handloads into 1" goups 3. Remington M700 338 Win Mag with Leupold Varix-III 2.5-8x. Shooting factory 225 grain core lokts into 1.5" groups.
  8. Re: Colorado Elk Results are posted! I'm in I'm in!!!!!! Got my fist season rifle tag. Can't wait for October
  9. Re: BARRY BONDS I want to see Bonds break the record. He may not be the nicest guy..............But that is why he'll finish #1 LOL. Lets go BB!
  10. Re: I\'m all tagged out here in NY!!! VERY nice! Great story also. It will be a hunt to remember for sure.
  11. Re: Realtree Turkey Team #22 Sounds like a whopper! Congrats on the hunt. That is a REAL nice bird.
  12. Re: winchester 88 .308 JUst the fact that it was from my grandfather would make it a sentimemntal favorite if it were me. Actual monatary value aside.............it would be pricless. I'd loved to gotten one of my Grandfathers rifles when he passed. Nothing he owned was as nice as the 88 here. But I loved his old deer rifle. A sporterized 30-40 craig. Peep sight & all! My incle now owns it. Someday it may still be mine.
  13. Re: New Encore Barrell but which one ? 308 would be a nice choice.
  14. Re: New Encore Barrell but which one ? I agree with AJ. the 270/280/30-06/7mmRemMag are all very similar in the ground they cover. While it was not one of your choices mentioned........I'd go with the 25-06. Still a nice deer round, but with lighter bullets it is a nice varminter as well.
  15. Re: 2006 RT Forum\'s Turkey Contest Photo Thread Submission for Team# 22 Cuttin-n-Struttin Not a big one......but taste! 4" beard .25" spurs R&L 14 lbs
  16. Re: Realtree Turkey Team #22 I here that! I passed on several jakes last year.........and ended up with NO bird last spring. I hate that. Because of all wild game. I like turkey the best. Nothing like a wild turkey dinner! I was also hunting a new area. The birds up there are hunted much harder that the local birds in the burbs of Pitsburgh. I worked WAy harder to nail this jake than the bird I got two years ago that won the overall here at RT. That bird scored 76 or so. He came in Gobbling all the way Up where took thi sbird I did not here a single gobble after they were off roost more than 15 mins. They just SHUT UP. Anyway, I've got to get all the stuff submitted so we get credit. And good luck to you guys still hunting! I can only take 1 bird per season. So I am done for the year.
  17. Re: Realtree Turkey Team #22 Well fellas I went out this am. At 6am I usually hear gobbles from one of three ridge tops near where I set up. Today.............NOTHING! I was a bit discouraged seeing that any hunting time aside from Saturday mornings is very hard for me to get. I hate to waste a day. Anyway, at 9am I decided to relocate about 100 yards to a saddle in the oak flat I was hunting. I set up my decoys about 25 yards out in front & to left of me and hit the slate call with a few soft purrs & clucks. I did this every 15 minutes until 9:45 am. I had a bird coming in ..............silent of course..........dead ahead. He walked into an opening 40 yards out & stuck up his head so he could see my decoys. He was not a big bird. But I could not pass up the turkey on the table One shot from my trusty of Winchester 1300XTR bowled him down. Just a jake.........but I am happy with him He'll grill up good for dinner tomorrow night Here are his stats: 4" beard 1/4" spurs left & right 14 lbs. Total score..........27! Not a big guy but a very fun hunt. FINALLY one of the silent birds came in from ahead of me instead of behind like twice before this year LOL
  18. Re: Realtree Turkey Team #22 I have been out 3 times so far. I have been busted TWICE by birds coming in silent from BEHIND ME Guess I need to hunt with rear view mirrors attached to my nogin LOL I will skip out on work tomorrow morning & try again. REAL nice bird that I am after. I will try relocating further away & down the valley a bit. He likes going that way. Maybe I'll fool him tomorrow. Or maybe he'll just laugh at me On the bright side. The birds were more talkative this week than last. Good luck to the rest of you guys. And remember to have fun while trying to get points on the board
  19. Re: Realtree Turkey Team #22 I am going to head out again Monday Morning. Time to take a break from work LOL. Hopefully I can score. I have called in two nice birds but they came in silent......and from BEHIND me. Busted both times. Just my luck LOL. Maybe I can make that change tomorrow. I let you guys know.
  20. Re: Moussaoui Gets Life [ QUOTE ] i wanted death, my wife wanted life in the super max. guys, i've been to florence colorado. he's in for ****. a small cell, no windows, no human contact, no one to talk to, in his cell 23 hours per day, no outside contact, no visitors, an 8" tv that only the guards will decide what he sees and when, and only if he's good. no talking with humans. no seeing humans. bland food, nutricious but poorly prepared and not tasty. in short, death would be better. he's 37, and has no life. most inmates pray for death within a year. this jerk has had his 15 minutes of fame, and is now destined to the same life as ted kozinsky, terry nichols, and 200 others who you have forgotten. i have a guard friend at that prison, and she says death is better.... [/ QUOTE ] I have to agree after reading this. If the conditions are as you say...........It is a fate worse than death. This SOB wanted to be executed. To be called a Martr. What he got.............is the equivalent of being burried alive. Only that they keep you breathing for your natural life. He is a scum bag. I am happy to see him not be able to take death, the easy way out.
  21. Re: Brush gun suggestion Try the Williams fool proof receiver sight. Your Marlin is already tapped for it. Use a fiber optic front bead & you are set. A VERY handy, light and quick handling brush gun. With teh receiver sight you look through the apeture & focus your eye only on the front bead. They are very accurate. The military has used this system for years over open sights. They are far easier to use, more accurate and well.........like Wiliams calls it.......foolproof
  22. Re: Realtree Turkey Team #22 Congrats of the bird
  23. Re: Reloading I was lucky enough to get a starter RCBS kit as a Christmas present 2 years ago. BUt even at that. By the time I buy dies, powder & accesories..........it would be 20 years before I come out ahead of just buying factory ammo LOL. I do not feel that reloading saves money. At least not for rifles. BUT it does offer the advantage of tuning loads, accuracy, bullet selections that otherwise are not available . And the ability to load uncommom rounds such as 300 savage, 358 win or expensive rounds like the 300 wby or for that mater any of the WSMs. It WILL make you very aware of ballistics. It made me realize that magnums are not that neccessary. A 30-06 wil do anything a 30 mag will to 300 yards......with a lot less drama on the shooters end It is a great hobby. It does make me shoot more. I really enjoy the whole process. But it has not saved me any money if I honestly look at the total costs involved. At least not the first several years
  24. Re: PA Opener! Same to you. Hope you have a good story to tell & pictures to share.
  25. Re: PA Opener! I'll be just outside of Portersville, off of yellow creek road. My uncle has 300 acres there.
