  1. Re: 280 being made-barrel suggestions? Thanks AJ. I know the mauser is not perfrct for a light weight gun, but this is the second & last LH action I have so it will be used for the task. I don't really need a super light weight rifle. Just one made as trim as posible. The action weighs about 1.5 lbs if I remember correctly.I am not worried about lugging an extra couple of ounces. I am guessing that with a 2-7x Leupold VX-II I will be comng in around 7 1/2- 7 3/4 pounds or so. When finished I will weigh ito be sure.
  2. I have Gary Stiles making me a 280 based on a LH mauser action. This rifle will be built s a light(er) weight hunting rig. My "mountain" rifle. Built Along the lines of a M70 featherweight or Mauser pattern "B" hunting rifle. Turkish walnut stock made trim with the schnable forend. Point pattern checkering. My initial thoughts are to go with a # 1 countour Douglas barrel cut to 22" Do you thing that light barrel would screw up the balance of the rifle ? Should I add a bit of weight & go with a #2 contour? How would the profile of the #1 compare with that of the Winchester M70 featherweight?
  3. Re: Kind of Cool Good luck Bob! Maybe the 280 will be ready if you draw & wanat to use it.
  4. Re: Marlin 336C in 35 Remington I have one. very nice rifle. Accurate to. I like the fact that it is light & compact. I use it as my truck gun during the hunting season.
  5. Re: Great offer for the OTPG! Hmmmmm...............Magnums Kick? Nevr seemed to notice it. Never had an issue shooting mine. Even after many 300 yard sessions with my 338 at the range over the summer. I think recoil & kick is more mental than anything. Many have a built in fear before they even pull the trigger. even with standard calibers. But with practice magnums are not har to shoot well at all.
  6. Re: GOLD status for OPTG!!!!!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Hey, Pudd????? Here's a riddle for you........... Q: How do you upgrade your status if you're a SCOPE member?? A: McDonald's straw & a spitwad. [/ QUOTE ] Tisk Tisk...... Remember, David used a sling to slay the mighty Goliath! [/ QUOTE ] Only because the 416 Rigby had not been invented yet!.......................
  7. Re: GOLD status for OPTG!!!!!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] just purchased a 416 rigby barrel for my T/C pro.. can't wait to shoot it [/ QUOTE ] As goundhogs through out central pennsylvania shiver at the the thought of 400 grain bullets being directed at there tiny little brains.... Yes.....the rigby WILL stop a charge
  8. Re: Elk Hunt - 2007! [ QUOTE ] This can not be true. Since I've been scanning the net---I've learned that elk have kevlar hides & a lowly 270 does not stand a chance. Now, I read that you used a 20 cent "Hornady" bullet--- Can I have a couple of marshmallows in my cup of cocoa. Conglads on the cow. Nothing like a wapiti for a freezer of good eatin. CB [/ QUOTE ] I needed a good laugh this morning! Gotta admit...this mag vs standard caliber thing is prety funny Congrats again on the elk. Any pictures? ......still think she might just be knocked out
  9. Re: SCOPE Scores With A 270! Congrats on the elk! Are you sure she's dead? That is a small bullet BUt I thought 270 bullets came with packs of cocoa in them????
  10. Re: Bears aren\'t wasting any time! Life comes at you fast........................ Looks like that was the highlight of the game for the bears. The were just not strong enough to beat the colts.
  11. Re: Classic Literature...... The best one I heard was "pick a caliber that works when everthing goes wrong......not one that requires everything to go right" Or something along those lines. Makes lots of sense. Rurack was writing about Africa. Great book by the way. Over there...you pay a trophy fee if yu draw blood....EVEN IF you do not get the animal. We are talking THOUSANDS of dolars in many cases..not a few bucks. Makes you re-evaluate what rifle you pick to hunt with. Especially when things bite back! Here in the states, to me, this means using a 338 win mag at a minimum when hunting in areas that have gizzlies. I defintely would not go lower than a 300 win mag. Have you ever stood beside a mount & looked at those claws! In yellowstone I had a grizzlie walk THROUGH camp, 10 yards outside my tent during early evening....tense situation is an undestatement! I'd want a whole lot more than a 270 when hunting in areas like that! So.........yes.....use enough gun. Enough gun to bail your A$$ out if needed!
  12. Re: Custom 35 Whelen finished! Sorry about the drool on the floor in the second picture down Someone pointed it out to me.....but in all fareness....I have been working on this rifle for almost 3 years now! Can't wait to get it to the range.
  13. Re: Custom 35 Whelen finished! Thanks for the congrats all! AJ: Can't wait to shoot it. I have a Leupold VAriX-III 2.5-8x that will go on it. In the pictures you see a Talley removable peep. A "just in case" backup. I will be loading up some 225gr Nosler Ballsitic tips to see how they perform. As well as some 250gr Speer & Hornadys. It will be fun playing this spring. Strut: What do you mean baby it.....you are the one that told me to use it bear hunting next year! But I think that is resolved.....your bears are to big. I will be forced to use my 375HH! BUt this rifle was built to use. No safe queen!! Bob: Good luck on that moose hunt! While the 35 will not make the trek out to Colorado. If you draw that sheep tag the 280 will. I most likely will take my Ruger 300 WM next season & leave it there as my "west gun". Such a hassel taking firearms on flights. And I always worry what is happening to them with the bagage guys....lost ..stoolen..broken etc. Robk The action on my rifle is not Turkish....The stock wood is. It is "Turkish Circassion Walnut" Very dense, tight grained & strong. Not as figured as typical California English, but less prone to warp & it takes checkering better than the other walnuts. The blank for my 280 is about the same as this one. [ QUOTE ] Turkish Circassian Walnut Wood Type: Juglans Regia Native to the Caucusus Mountains Seedling: wild wood, normally uncultivated Color: blond, brown, red, to almost black Weight: varies, from region to region - blank to blank Density: varies from region to region - blank to blank Figure: varies according to type of cut, slab, 1/4 saw, etc. almost all has some faint fiddle back to extreme fiddle back; higher grades exhibit a translucence or inner glow as if there is light from within Stability: extremely good, the best of all walnut Hardness: varies from region to region - blank to blank Workability: the best in the opinion of most stockmakers This is the wood by which all other wood is judged in the stockmaking trade [/ QUOTE ]
  14. My custom LH 35 Whelen built by Gary Stiles is finally done! And AHEAD of schedule by 4 months! Don't hear that often. Anyway.....he had it on display at a gun show & I took some pictures. He still has a few minor things to do but it is 98% right now. I am more than pleased. The Turkish blank I bought from Ray atkinson turned out very nice. These pictures do not do it justice. I was not able to get many good shots in the tight confines of the show. I will take better ones when I pick it up. All I need to do now is get the rest of the $$$ together. Hopefully by months end so I can bring it home Saw strut & snapper at the show. Had a good time. They got to see this beauty as well! I have another action with him now....it will be a 280.
  15. You guys will like this ground hog OTPG gun! 50 cal @ 600 yards video
  16. Re: OTP ... Elk-Gun I agree that it is a BIT HEAVY to lug up the rockies The scope is also a bit big for my tatse. Even for a single shot long range rig like this.
  17. Re: Browning Guns I have an a-bolt SS in 375HH & like it just fine. On several sites Browning gets a bad rap for being made in Japan, having a complex trigger & using cheap metal for the bottom metal assembly. To each his own I guess. Mine has never given me any problems.
  18. Re: Nikon Monarch interesting. I may have to pick up a 2-7x or 3-9 if they are going to have cood deals. What are they changing with respect to the new ones?
  19. Re: Colts vs. Bears Colts will win by more than 10. I do not see this as a close game.
  20. Re: Question for the OTPG Between the WSM & the 300 win mag....I'd take the 300 win mag. No need to contribute to the wealth of Jamison. And the 30 win mag is here to stay. The short mag deal has yet to run it's course. Maybe it stays. Maybe it just fades away.
  21. Re: Not For The Cocoa Drinkers............... One thing is for sure.....if you dd not stop the groundhog charge with the first shot.....you may get lucky & roast him with the flame & muzzle blast from that break!
  22. Re: The few...the proud...The OTPG!!!!!!! Strut....you need to add my 300 wby & 7mm rem mag to my list of "ground hog guns" Also, let me know when the Indiana gun show is. I need to talk to Gary Stiles about a 460 WBY
  23. Re: Official Off the Porch Gang signup thread!!!!! So...........when do the hats & T-shirts come out? Can we go over designs at the Indiana gun show?
  24. Re: 35 whelen I own two. A Remington 7600 & a custom mauser. It is ny favorite hunting caliber. There is only one thing I dislike about hunting with the 35 whelen.......everything that I hit wit it goes "bang-flop" Straight down. No movement. SO I don't get to practice my tracking skills If you get a good deal on one, jump all over it!
  25. Re: Buying a gun on-line I have bought plenty of used guns over the web. Both from auction sites & from private parties through classified sections on sites like this. Things I insist on are 1. Talk to the person on the phone first 2. Make sure they can provide pictures. I had one guy that was dragging his feet on sending pictures. I just walked away from the deal. If they can not send pictures.....they may not even have the gun.
