Re: 20 ga ? Well guys my son has shot about 50 shells thru the 12 over the last couple weeks. So he tells me yesterday that he will try a turkey load. So I gave him one. He shot it just fine. He said it kicked like crazy and he didn't really enjoy it, but he could deal with it for Turkey hunting. It was just a mental thing. Thanks for all the replys. By the way the 12 with a 3 inch turkey load does kick a bit more than my 30-06. Now I guess I need to order a turkey barrel for my NEF Huntsman.

Re: Bullet ? I had also thought about the Triple Shock, but wasn't sure about accuracy with a hollow point. I may have to look into them also. I wish you could purchase different bullets in a box of ten instead of 50. Then if you don't like them you aren't out much cash, and you don't have all these extra bullets. Thanks for the info.

Re: 20 ga ? The 20 I have is a Older H&R single shot. It will not take interchangeable choke tubes, it will hold 3 inch shells. I haven't tried to pattern it yet with some turkey loads. I would have to look but I think it is Improved Cylinder, so that will limit the range. We'll just have to shoot some in the next couple months and see if he can work up to some turkey loads in either the 12 or the 20. I will not do the switch on him. I he can only shoot a heavy field load then so be it. Maybe his range will only be 20 or 25 yards, as long as he is comfortable shooting. I have shot several turkeys at that range and closer. Thanks for all the info. Matt

Re: Bullet ? Thanks guys. I will load some this spring and see how they shoot. If I ever get out west to elk hunt I will load a heavier bullet.

Re: Traditions exploded yesterday I'll gladly take that ML off your hands. What is the shipping to 49327? Matt

Re: 20 ga ? Well guys I think it's just a mental thing with him. He hasn't even shot a turkey load in the 12. He is 15 years old, 5'11 and about 140 lbs. He shoots my 30-06 pump gun just fine. He has seen me shoot the 12 and said there is no way he wants to shoot that gun. That is why I thought I might be able to do the switch on him. I don't think he is too young or too small to shoot the 12, he is just scared it will kick him too much. I keep telling him if he can shoot the 06 he can shoot some turkey loads in the 12. Thanks for the input on the loads for the 12 and 20. Matt

Re: Bullet ? Thanks, that's the kind of info I'm looking for.

I am going to try some new loads for my 300H&H. I've been looking at the Scirocco and the SST bullets. Does anybody have any input on these two bullets? They will be used for Whitetails only. The Scirocco has a very high BC according to the website. I just am curious how these bullets will hold up on impact, I don't want them to blow up and not penetrate. I was considering the 150's, I should get around 3200 fps. Shots could be close or out as far as I want. I don't plan on shooting much past 350 yards but I could if I can get the gun and myself capable. Thanks Matt

My son wants to Turkey hunt this spring, but he is afraid to shoot my 12. What is the range on a 20 gauge turkey load? I have a 20 he could use but I have never put any turkey loads thru it. I thought about letting him practice alot with the 12 with some light target loads and then when its time to shoot a turkey he wouldn't expect the recoil, and you don't really notice the recoil with one shot on game. Any advice? Matt

Re: TC Shockwave Bonded Bullets? I have had mixed results with the shochwaves. Saturday I shot 2 deer with those bullets. The first one was at about 80 yards, slightly quartering to me. The bullet hit the shoulder blade then followed it up and came out just below the spine on the other side with little expansion. I had to track that deer all morning and shoot it again. Finally put it down around 11:00, it was first shot at 7:45. The second deer was broadside about 50 yards. Shot behind the shoulder, the bullet entered behind the shoulder and took out both lungs and the top of the heart with about a 2 inch exit hole. The blood trail was good and she only went about 30 yards. I was wondering if when those bullets hit on an angle maybe the yellow plastic tip doesn't get pushed into the bullet straight and then you get weird results. I know I won't be shooting them next year. Still searching for a good bullet with consistent performance from every shot.

Re: pump action rifles I have a old 760 that I picked up used. It is very accurate and reliable. It's a 30-06 with the longer barrel not the 18 inch carbine. I haven't had any problems with it, and I hunt some nasty weather also. By the way the barrells on pump guns are free floated, there is nothing to touch the barrell. You can also get a trigger job done. Then you can put it against any bolt out there. The best group I've shot at 100 yards measured around 5/8 and that is with factory ammo.

Re: Michigan bow hunters I live in Newaygo County. Hunt Newaygo, kent, Montcalm, and Mecosta some. Mostly Montcalm and North East Kent County.

Re: open sights ? Well thats what I thought. But it is already all the way down. It must be the way he is mounting the rifle. I shot it, and hit 1 inch low at 50. So he needs to change how he is mounting the rifle. Maybe I should get him a peep sight. He would have to get his head down then in order to see thru the hole. Thanks guys.

My son is shooting open sights and is hitting about 7 inches high at 50 yards and I can't ever remember which way to move the back sight. Do I need to move it up or down? Thanks

Re: QDM Well we have been doing it for 5 years now. The 2 farms I hunt have about 2900 acres combined, but the lands are not connected. We have an 80 here 200 there, so its hard to get the neighbors to go along. We have shot lots and lots of does been letting bucks under 3.5 years old go. Now the results of this over 5 years. Very dissapointing!!! All that has changed is that I see alot less deer. With less does around I see less bucks. Our bucks havent gotten any bigger, the neighbors still shoot what ever they want during rifle season and we aren't getting any bucks. Last year it was getting so bad I didn't even want to hunt. I was sick of sitting there watching deer I couldn't shoot and I wasn't enjoying it. This year I said heck with this, I remember when I was younger and couldn't wait to shoot any buck and I had alot more fun. So I shot the first legal buck with my bow. Still shot a few does and had a much more enjoyable season. I read some study from Texas that said you need something like 10,000 acres of continuous land to really have an effect on the buck population. Most 1.5 year old bucks pick up and move the next year trying to find a new home range. So why let all these bucks go if they are going to be 3 miles away the next year? I think next year we are going to lift the restrictions off the farms and just have fun hunting. If you see something you want to shoot and you have a legal tag then I have no problem with it. I had more fun when I used to see 30 to 40 deer a day instead of 5 to 10.

Is there any way to find the MV for my muzzleloader without a chronograph? Even an approximate number. I shoot a NEF Huntsman with 100 grains of pyrodex pellets and a 300 grain SST. Just curious about the MV. Was considering going to a lighter bullet. Thanks Matt

I own a Huntsman ML and I am trying to find out if I can purchase another barrel for it. The website is unclear and the local shops all gave me different answers. I called the customer service number and they didn't even know. Also I want to purcase a rifle for my son. I was looking at the Ultra but unsure which barrels he could add on. Again the website isn't very clear. Maybe I should just by him the Handi rifle. Any help? Matt

Re: GIANT DEER STATE OF CHOICE ??? I will have to say Iowa. Since I already sent a deposit in to the outfitter. Hope to draw a tag next year and be there the first or second week of Nov. Here in MI if you have access to some big farms in the southern part of the state you can find some big deer. Where I hunt if you get a shot at anything over 100 that very well may be the best buck in the area. Our DNR just lets everyone kill too many, I've heard that Michigan hunters kill 80 to 90% of the 1 1/2 old bucks every year. In 24 years of bowhunting I can count on one hand the bucks I've seen over 130, and I hunt alot.

Re: Michigan Rut??? I also had the week off before gun season. And the weather was terrible, warm and very windy. I did see a couple of mature bucks chasing, but that's it a couple. It's been more like a trickle rut. Not one to two weeks of crazy activity. I saw bucks running does in the last week of Oct. But it never got going good. Don't know if it was the weather or the later full moon this year. We hunt mostly Montcalm county.

Re: NEF I have the NEF Huntsman and so far I have been pleased with it. Shoots good, easy to clean, and for the price it can't be beat. I do want to get a trigger job done on it though. I haven't had any quality issues or any complaints so far.

Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! Well after you explain in that way it makes perfect sense. Thanks. The 150's seem to work pretty good on deer also. My son shot a doe at 160 yards last night. Double lung shot, nice exit hole, decent blood trail, and she only went 30 yards after the shot.

Re: Switching From 180grn to 150grn! I also switched from the 180's to the 150's. I first shot them at 50 yards and they were centered but about 3 inches high. So backed up to 100 yards and they were even higher, 6 inches high. Why? I don't understand why they were so much higher at 100. I brought them down to 2 inches high at 100. AJ my 760 really likes the 150's also. My last 3 shot group was just over 5/8 at 100, and people keep telling me that pump guns aren't very accurate. Now I just need to shoot a couple of deer and see how they work on game.

I have a 300 H & H and the only factory rounds I can find anymore are Federals with 180 grain partitions. How do these bullets work on Whitetails? I could have shots anywhere from 10 to 300 yards. I have never used these bullets before and was curious about the performance on game. Also hope my rifle will shoot these rounds, or I'll have to reload. If I reload what is everybody's opinion on bullet choice for deer? Also if I reload I may go to 150 grain bullet. I need one that will hold together at close range, but still expand at 300 yards. Or I will just hunt with my 30-06 again this year. Thanks Matt

Anyone have exp with 55gr 30/30 accelerator loads?
bwlacy replied to Adjam5's topic in Rifles & Accessories
Re: Anyone have exp with 55gr 30/30 accelerator loads? Is that 30/30 a lever gun with a tube? If so I would only load one round at a time. I've always heard not to load pointed rounds in a tube fed firearm. I've never tried it so I don't know. But a pointed bullet against a primer in the tube with the recoil of the shot sounds like a bad thing waiting to happen. -
Re: ?? Motorola T6300 Walkabout Hey just a thought. Can you put an earbud in those? If you can then even though you can't turn the ringer off at least only you would hear it. That would be cheaper than buying new radios.
