  1. Re: What boots for hunting in really cold weather? Well I've had Sorel, and LaCrosse boots and my feet still got cold during a long sit. The best boots I've found are Army surplus Mickey Mouse boots. You still need good socks to wick away the moisture and an outer sock to keep your foot warm. But they are alot warmer than any other boot I've tried. I've sat in -10 with a strong wind in the UP of Michigan and my feet didn't get cold. Also the surplus boots are alot cheaper than the other boots.
  2. Re: Montecs or Crimsons With that low of draw weight you should shoot something that is a cut on contact. I highly recommend the Steel Force heads for low draw weight. My son killed a buck with 32 pounds and a Steel Force head. Had about 20 inches of penetration. I have shot them out of my bow to test them and they fly great. Good Hunting Matt
  3. Re: Electric Feeders Hey thanks for the info everybody. Has anyone used a solar charger for their feeders? The only problem we've had is when it gets really cold the batteries die fast. Matt
  4. Who makes the best electric deer feeders? I have a Kenco straight shooter and have been pretty happy with it. We are going to purchase a couple more feeders and was curious about the brands on the market. Matt
  5. Re: Marlin 336w scope I have a Marlin 336C with a fixed 4X with a 40mm objective lens. With good low mounts. I tried the see thru mounts for awhile and didn't like the scope being that high. I don't think you need a big variable scope on a 30-30, they aren't really a long range rifle. Matt
  6. Re: 30-30 ammo for deer I shot Remington 170 grain soft point core lokts for years. Never had a problem with them. Shoot the 150's and 170's and see what shoots the best in your gun. Matt
  7. Re: Powerbelts - thoughts? I had the same problem Saturday evening. I shot a doe at about 90 yards. This was my first deer with a ML. She was a fairly large old doe about 150 pounds. Any way her leg was back when I shot, I hit the leg bone just below the shoulder blade. We tracked her all over the place and finally put another shot in her neck while she was bedded. The first shot never entered the chest cavity. The bullet just exploded and blew up the leg. I am all done with the PB Aerotips!! I may try the Hornady SST. My cousin shoots these and hasn't had any problems with them. Matt
  8. Re: Rifle rest question ?? Hey thanks. I've never heard this before. So if I know that I will have a hard rest while hunting, what if I sight in with a hard rest? Then if I shoot freehand the POI will be low? Now that I think about this, all 3 deer I shot this year I hit kind of high. Not enough to not make a lung hit, but higher than I was holding. I just thought it was me.
  9. Re: Rifle rest question ?? So if I sight my rifle in using a sandbag but I hunt from a box blind and use the hard 2x4 window sill for a rest, where will the POI be? Or what about using a hard Y stick for a shooting stick? How much difference are we talking about at 100 yds? Matt
  10. Re: Failsafe or Partition Thanks everybody. Now I just hope that the partitions will shoot out of my gun. I used to shoot core lokts, but they don't make them anymore. I guess I can hand load if it comes down to that. Mostly this gun is a keep sake. I've been hunting with my 30.06 mostly the last few years. I just like to keep it ready to hunt with. Matt
  11. I have a 300 H & H and the only factory ammo I can find anymore is Winchester 180 Failsafes, and Federal Premium 180 Nosler Partitions. My question is which bullet performs better on deer. I currently only hunt Whitetail, may make it out west for elk some day. Will the failsafes expand on thin skinned game? I have no experience with either of these bullets. Thanks Matt
  12. How do you determine the correct length of pull for a person? Also how do they measure LOP on the stock? How important is correct stock fit really? I am a short guy, 5'8" , and most rifles feel too long to me. Is this why my 300 H & H kicks the crap out of me? thanks Matt
  13. Re: Weatherby Vanguard ? Hey guys thanks. I thought something was fishy. I am not really in the market right now anyway. AJ I'm not really looking for a WSM, I say that rifle and it was a caliber I don't have and thought I might be interested. I have a few that I don't use now, but I think my next rifle will be a 280. Thanks for the info again guys. Matt Lacy
  14. Re: **Big 9 point Swamp buck is dead to D-mans arrow** Hey that is a great buck. I don't want to be a downer, but I would guess that buck at 110 at the most. I can't tell how long the main beams are from the front though. Of course I have been wrong before. Who cares what it scores!! He belongs on the wall for sure!!! Congrats on a good shot, and a good looking buck. Matt Lacy
  15. A local sport shop has a Weatherby Vanguard with a synthetic stock, and stainless, in 270 WSM. They are asking $485 on sale. Is this a good price? They told me that it lists for $985. I don't know too much about Weatherby guns. Is this model a good gun? I wasn't really looking for another rifle, but that price caught my eye. I don't have that caliber, so I may be buying a new toy. Thanks for any help. Matt Lacy
  16. Re: Cleaned out WalMart Tonight! A few years ago the one here had every bottle of scent for 50 cents. It didn't matter what brand they were all the same price. I bought every bottle they had. I have also picked up tree stands a few times for under 20 bucks.
  17. For all around shooting and hunting, buy a Scott. You can't go wrong with any of their products.

    Neck shots

Re: Neck shots I do prefer to shoot them in the shoulder, but I have shot several in the neck when I had to. I have never seen one hit in the neck with my 300 H&H that didn't pile right there!!! There is no wounding with that gun. We hunt public land in Michigan and 2 of my friends have had deer taken from them when they shot behind the shoulder and had to track them down. After following the blood trail they found someone else tagging the deer. Drop em in there tracks and you don't loose them.
