    NO DEER?

Re: NO DEER? This time of year is definately tuff. Deer have been hunted hard and are out of their normal movements and mostly nocturnal on heavy hunted areas. You may get some normal movement on property that is not heavily hunted and usually if you see one you'll see alot of deer. Likewise you may sit all day and not see a deer. I prefer to push deer this time of year in areas that I know will hold deer. My favorite place to do this is a farm that is heavily hunted. The properties that I solely hunt by myself I will hunt in my tree stands and let natural deer movement prevail. Good Luck.
  4. Re: Well thats that. The southeast corner of the state where we hunt has been getting some ice storms by the looks of it on the weather channel. I like that you are shooting some does. It's refreshing knowing that chasing big racked bucks is not the end all for some . Congrats on your three doe harvests.

    SwitchBack

Re: SwitchBack I shot this bow last night and it's a nice shooting bow. Having not shot any bow including my own since the 2nd week of Nov. I picked this bow off the shelf with a preset sight and with two arrows that looked to long for the draw and shot two groups of 1" at 20 yards. No stabilizer or string silensers and the bow was smooth, no noise of any kind and was dead in my hand.
  6. Re: Amazing Iowa Hunt.......PICS! I know Iowa holds some nice deer but that picture is to good to be true. There isn't one small buck in the bunch.
  7. Re: Big New Mexico Bull Great looking bull. Nice pictures as well. Looks like you enjoyed some nice weather as well.
  8. Re: late season/cold weather buck tips? Food is where the deer will be. Unfortunatly they tend to herd up this time of year so if your not seeing anything it could make for long days afield. OR you can see 15 to 20 at a time. Don't be surprised to see alot of does bunched up. If you do see a lone deer it will probably be a buck.
  9. Re: First ML deer Congrat's , Muzzzeloading is a great way to hunt and it's catching on in popularity.
  10. Re: Huntin in rain Don't know how to help you on the this but I will be coming down to your neck of the woods for a m.l hunt next week. We are hunting Queen Annes, Kent, Talbot & Caroline counties. How has the year been down there so far. Our contact said the warmer weather has the bigger bucks stiil not moving a whole lot. ??
  11. Re: I wish Va. would place a four point rule! Thisisoriginal, I have heard both sides of the Penna. story. This year my brother who hunts in your county shot another good buck just as the other 3 guys did also. He has shot good deer since I can remember up there. I hunt mostly in the Special Regs area and I took a nice 8 pt. the last day of archery. I saw bigger and know of 3 good bucks taken off one farm the first week of gun season. My father lives in Sullivan Co. and he is mailing me 2 pages of the Sullivan Review newspaper that has pictures of hunters with their wall hangers. If it's anything like last year there will be some big ones taken up there as well.
  12. Re: Is Muzzleloader Hunting More Popular Than Bow? In the circle of guys I hunt with we have all taken a liking to our in-lines since getting them about 3 years ago. We don't have much over lap between bow and Muzzleloader ( in-line's ) with the exception of an early muzzeloader season for doe's only. I mainly use my in-line inlieu of rifle or shotgun during gun season.
  13. Re: Late Bow season I really like the late season here in Penna. It's like starting all over again. This year I will be pursuing does also since I filled my buck tag during archery season. Gun or bow, it doesn't matter to me. Just being outside with snow on the ground ( hopefully ) is great.
  14. Re: done with shotguns I haven't used my rifle or shotgun since buying my Encore 50 cal. The only time I take the slug gun is when I'm pushing deer . If I'm a stander I got the muzzeloader. More accurate than my slug gun.
  15. Re: barnes I shoot the Barnes 250 w/ 120 gr. of 777 out of my Encore 50 cal. I shot the gun at the range last on 11-27-04 and had 4 of 5 shots in a 3/4" group at 100 yards w/ the 3rd shot a " flyer ". I was very happy with that as this gun has always shot good with this combination. The weekend before that however was very foggy and wet out and the gun shot crappy. That was the reason for going back on 11-27-04. All guns are different so what works for my gun may not work for you. Good Luck !!
  16. Re: DEER DOGS Dogs have no business chasing deer. I like the idea of dogs w/ handlers finding wounded deer. I just don't see the need on deer.
  17. Re: Safety Harness Chest harness that I can also hang from to set my stands keeping both hands free.
  18. Re: Five Hunters Shot Dead in Woods Let's see: -Pistons & Pacers basketball game riot. -College football game brawl. -Terrell Owens of the Eagles taking a cheap shot in Sunday's game vs. the Redskins. - 5 hunters dead over a tree stand. HUMMMMMMMM
  19. Re: factory load for a 308 caliber Robk, I found tha t the Win. 150gr power points shot the best out of all that I had.. The Win. 168gr ballistic tips didn't shoot that great. I also had Fed. 163gr (?) bear claws that didn't impress me either. The Fed. Power shocks in 150 shot better than the 180's but neither were as good as the Win. 150's for now. I am going to pick up another box of Win. 150's and shoot them again with the balance of the others mentioned as a double check. The weather yesterday was not great. My trusty Encore 50 cal. was even acting up.
  20. Re: factory load for a 308 caliber Robk, I am also testing .308 loads now for my Encore. I have shot Federal Powershocks in 150 and 180 and I do not like the groups I am getting at 100 yards. The 180's shot about 2" groups but I am looking for sub 1" which is very possible with the Encore and the right bullet . I also shot Rem. Coreloks at 50 yards with touching holes but at 100 yards they went all over the place. I have since gotten boxes of Win. Silvertips 150, and some brands ( can't remember the brand off the top of my head ) in the 160 and 163 weights. I am going to the range tomarrow and I will try and post the results if I have time. PS: I have been told by more than one person that if I were a handloader The boatails in 160 are a real shooter.
  21. Re: Is a 3.5 year old to young????? I think you can never start them to young. Because your rifle hunting make sure you have shooting muffs for her with you just in case you do get a shot. Good luck.
  22. Re: 2004 ND Rifle Buck Great looking buck. Excellent pictures.
  23. Re: 17 Pointer Down ( pics ) Nice buck Kirk. Great story.
  24. If your seeing does then the bucks will come. I thought the same of my spot until this year & the bucks were there and some were good ones. If your spot holds does then it's just a matter of time before the bucks show up especially this time of the year. If you think the bucks are nocternal there due to the disturbences then you need to make a decision. Stay and hope or move towards where the bucks are coming from in order to intercept them during shooting hours.
  25. Re: scope vs open sites I like my Encore topped with the Leupold scope BUT if you are planning to hunt out of state check that states reg's as some states only permit open sighted muzzeloaders.
