I do know hornady coems out with a 80 gr, I would not shoot them but its you choice! I find that unless a bone was hit in anyt bush at all it will take off and run for up to 100 plus yards even with a chest shot!Unless lots of snow hard to track! I really likes my 65 gr hornady v-max in the 6mm i used to use for coyotes, I slowed them down and they were great, low damage and good inner expansion!!

Re: SERM surveys!! Kelly, I hunt this area every year for 6 months and this year I seen at least 40-50% less mule deer, I found dead ones every day otu shed huntign soem days up to 20 near hay stacks! I am talking the wood mnt, scout lake, area, even in your wifes uncle's pasture I did not see near the mules I have in past, this year I was seeign 30-40 a day last year it was not uncommon to see up to 100!Sure the year was different and the pressure form the natives that never knew there was elk here till the draw was put in place and the lack of a warden for 6 months brought out the best in alot of locals!!But I knwo from thsi spring and the amount of twins and the dead deer I found it is going to be hard on them next year if they still keep the huge anterless draws open!! With the natives, i deffinatly am not runnign there huntign down, I am runnign the way "alot" of them do it, it was designed as a TOOL to help feed them and support themselves, not as a contest, they are coming down here with 60 thoasand doller vehicles, trailers, quads and asking if anyone seen a huge bull, it was meant as a food source and not as kill everything that moves, the natives of the past used everythign and killed what was needed and no more , these guys who are comign down do not even look native and I am sure are only 1/8 at the most but got there meti cards, they are killing for the kill not the food!!They do not ahve any respect for the animals anymore, they are here to kill as many as they can and thats all there is to it!!! I remember when I was abotu 16 I seen my first elk down there, I was amazed the herd has coem up to what the wardens say abotu 3-400 ,I watch these animals every day from august to end of deer season ans love every minute of it, they are killing them with no thinking of wat all the massecure will cause in the future of the population! From what i hear there has been overe 50 shot and alot more big mule and whitetails this fall alone, gonna hurt the deer and elk there for many years to come!! Sask man I ahve tried to e-mail 5 different adresses this fall with no ansers, I e-mailed abotu the closing of the non resident coyote which is a crockwhen soemone is willing to pay $40 to hunt them why not when they are paying soemone else 12 a hour plus milage and training to hunt them for the sheep bourd,Our local warden said it was couse it interfered with deer season, well close it till after thenopen it, there are many die hard coyote hunters that would love to try it here were not many people know how to do it without a snowmobile or truck and shotgun!! Second was the massecure of elk down south and all the dead ones being found, I e-maild tellign them to get there @ss in gear and get a warden down here couse every night bow huntign I hear gunshots and the few deer I am seeign have been shot at lots!! Not one anser from anyone!! Just abotu givin up on trying to do anythign , like our retired warden said trying to talk to these guys is like tryign to talk to the wall, he tried all the eyars they had the open seaosn for antelope to tell them what was goign to happen but he knew nothign there experts ahd it all figured out, then the next year after 4 years of 3 tags for everyone you never seen a speedgoat for eyars, they said ti was from disease and coyotes, it was from bad management, i am afraid what is abotu to coem of our whole animal rate if things do not change and soon!!

gus I used to trap foxes alot, I did not usually wax the traps but I did boil them and die them all, I always wore rubber boots and gloves and usually had hole sets, I saved all the guys and feathers from my fall bird huntign and dug a hole in front of the hole allready there, i would put soem guts in the hole burry it then cover the trap with a small peice of wax paper to stop the freezing down then siftign with dirt or snow, to top it all off I would spread feathers all around!! Mynext best set was one in thick trees, i would set soem bait and make it so the fox could only get in one way by puttign branches low, I would then put a stepping stick, like a 5" log across the trail the fox would every tien step on it to look awound and I had the trap set a few inches before it so he had to step on it, I would set up abotu 20 yards from the bait, make twigs ect so the fox will step on the trap not arouhnd it! Good luck!!

Re: SERM surveys!! I tend to agree with CLB on the most part, not enough does in the area to make up a doe zone, we had one a few eyar back before the bad winter but thye have not came back yet to good levels! With the bucks, I do understand your problems, i hear abotu them all the tiem and think its crap,[2 deer season] I would really like a size limut in deer, it will stop alot of the smaller deer being shot and to top it off will stop peopel from seeing a deer jump up at 500 ayrds and openign up couse ti has a rack, and trust me it happens all the time!It also will keep the idiots out of the fields and alsomake the hunters that stick with it more ethical and start to hutn the right ways!! I do not really want to see a draw for whitetail, I think that way ti may be 3-4 years before we can shoot a deer just not the way to go abotu things I think![in my opinion] Ido think they have to do soemthign abotu the CCw areas, all it is doing is bringing in the peopel who want to kill deer from all over, these and not the type of hunters ranchers want on there land on the most part, I know a few from this area who went over and they are the drivers who will not get out of a vehicle if they were stuck, they would use a cell phone to call help lol,Also I think thye have to slow down the anterless mule deer season, down here I have not been seeign hardly any mule deer this year [lost alot last winter] and they still ahd tons of doe tags, gonna take a long time to get back from this year, both the bad winter and all doe tags, and to top it off we had a elk season here and natives from all over sask and alberta have been here the past few months killing everythign that moves, 30 elk were shot and many big deer last week alone I hear! Finally had 6 warden cars in town last week becouse they were pushign a game preserve to get them otu and shootign on the edge, 4 were found dead by ranchers to, alot of new posted land@!!!!

Re: Coyote coloration? Personally its hard to tell with the eyes glowing but I suspect a female, the second pic looks more like a male by head structure, its really hard to tell on the light one!! By looking at the coyote It looke like just one of our lighter ones, its not a albino or anythign!! I am not saying every coyote follows what I said but it seems the majority have! She does not look like a pup really so probably been in the area for a while!! Look closly at your first pic, look behind the rear legs compared to the second pic, look at the body structure, look at the thick neck, and most of all look at the forehead, notice anything thta looks wierd? i would almost bet that is a cross or coydog like they call them!! my fur buyer had one last yearand [really rare up here] he showed me all the differences and the dog had curly hair behind the legs, under the belly, like that one does, it had different structure and has a different shaped head!Looks like you got a nother rare pic there to!! Thanks again for sharing!!

I am not sure how many of you have ever been at a air show, but here in Canada we have the "snowbirds" theya re a acrobatic group of planes that travel the world to do stunts, anyways they are stationed abotu 70 miles from me and I get to watch them nearly every tiem out coyote huntign, today 2 planes crashed in mid air, one pilot managed to eject and is in hospital, the other did not get out!!it was just abotu 20 miles from otr town and people say they seen it from here a big pair of fireballs!! it was right in a pasture I do alot of coyote callign from so thank god it was not on a weekend when I was there huntign!! Say a few prayers for the pilots poor family from BC would you all!!

Re: Coyote coloration? coyotes adapt there color to there area of living!! it usually takes abotu 3 generations but will adapt! Here when i shoot a coyote my fur buyer can tell what area I shot it in 80% of the tiem! The darker coyotes tend to be more of bush animals with thicker courser hair and tend to be courser to tend with all the burs ect of the bush, the med colored and "tawney" they call them are a kind of yellowy coyote are found more in the prairy grass and farmland, they are colored in accodence to there surroundings! Then there are the lighter ones, these have snow white bellies and really light pelts, they are the lake runners, they are suually found around big lakes and spand alot of time runnign the ice! The snow and glare has alot to do with the lighter color but it is amajing how the color varies from area to area! I have abotu 40 coyotes pelts hanging right now and htere are pretty well just the 3 color phases in them, the pale, tawny and dark, then of course there are black ones which are like albinos really rare and are not caused by the area they live! Soemtimes you will find different colors in a area but this is usually becosue of lone males movign in or soem being shot out, they say a coyote will travel up to 200 miles to find a mate, food ect!! Nice pics, thanks for sharing, they sure are a mazing animal that to many overlook!!

Cool stuff!!

Re: Its all begun!!! I was told you needed the regestration, I know if I carry it for one day and get sweated up it will be shot lol!! I was told they are taking the rfles and charging the guys wiht not haveing a registered firearm, I was sure ti was a charge you should be arrested on but I have no idea anymore!! All I know is they will get a gun from one of the boys with lots of money and the fun will begin in court, I believe that si all we need to convince the commy liberals abotu this joke and how it is illigal!!
-
Well guys time to hide or bury all your non registered guns!!I ahve all mine registered of course! The local police in the Gravelbourg, LAfleche, and Shamrock areas in sask are goin crazy!!It all started the last week of deer season when they were stopping every vehicle with peopel wearing hunting clothes in the local coop service stations, they are asking for regestration permits or be able to prove it if not the gun is gone and you are charged!!There has been 8 confiscated so far in the past 2 weeks in very small towns of 500 peopel or so!! I ahd no idea they were going to do it but I guess the new sargent is from down east [one of the big cities] he has no idea what this is doing with the local police civilian relationships,!! I just was surprized they are doing this when they said they were not going to prosecute anyone yet!!

Nope never seen one at all exept the 2 times I stopped by his office were he is EVERY TUESDAY!! makes alot of sence having a office day when the poachers know what day he is not in the field!!He is from the city 2 hours away and only checks our huge area of 100 miles by 100 miles every few days and when phone ins are called!! What a crock, i would like to see one everyday out there! I ahve been huntign from sept 1 every day also!Have not even seen one on the highway!Gonna get worse before better in sask I am afraid!!!!

Re: Question:::: In ml season we do not have to wear orange we can wear camo and I do! In rifle season as long as we are hunting we have to wear red, or orange but when youa re done you can hunt coyotes in camo, I do that, I wear my camo and wear a orange hat to get to and from my areas, then I put my mask on once in the area to call,

Re: Horn Fondling Hey man wo thought I was the only one!! Glad to hear there are more and I am sure mrs sureshot is glad to she thought I was a bit wacko!![more than usuall anyways]

Re: stupid and more stupid!! BTW are you in bush country?? Is there cottontails in your area? If so the cottontail will work but if there are not any it will not bring in most coyotes, I would recommend gettigna few more calls and having a variation!
-
Re: stupid and more stupid!! It all depends on the size of gun ect, you have to sew up every hole even a a couple stitches were the bullet enters,If any dmamage is seen in the finished product the price usually drops a bit but depends on were, in the neck on the sides or belly are the worst, if right in the center of the back not as bad couse that is were they split them to start the process of tanning! This year thoguht there is a lot of coyotes still in the market from all the idiots who were out last year with nsow machines and helped get one of the highest kills ever in history,So in turn the market isstartign out a bit slow,They are expecting abotu 30% drops in price of top line coyotes[soem has to do with the drop of the US doller] seeing all pelts are bought in US funds, the section 3 which are bad damages or early or late coyotes will be very hard to sell if not impossable, and the partailly damages will be worth 5-8 bucks compared to 40 for a non damaged!
-
I ran out of thread ;last weeek for sewing up the hides [usually use heavy #69 embroydery thread, I found soem heavy cotton that i could not break with my hands so iw as sure it would be ok, I did up 11 coyotes last week with that thread and tonight when I took them off the strechers 5 of them the threads broke and you can see the spots they were sewed!!I tried ot repair them now but I think I just threw abotu 200 bucks out the window by being in a hurry and not waitign for the right thread!! I wonder when I will ever start to think before I do stupid things that just cost me money!!!
