  1. Re: Food Plot Success Stories [ QUOTE ] what is the actual preperation needed for the throw and grow product? so do you still need to till or anthing? i would love to try this stuff in my "secret corner" but i dont really have any equipment. thanks [/ QUOTE ] Pretty much like the post below yours. If you can get a lawn mower & some round up back there you should be set. Just try to get any weeds or brush as low as possible then spray it with round up. Wait a week or so, then broadcast your fertilizer then broadcast the seed. If you can, try to do this a day before a good soaking rain.
  2. Re: Food Plot Success Stories [ QUOTE ] Has anyone had success in developing a food plot with a product that is in the "No Plow" or "Throw & Go" variety? I do not have the equipment necessary to produce major food plots, so planting these types of products is my only alternative. I'm located in central Wisconsin in primarily hardwood forest with oaks, maples and some pines. It would be great if you could share the type of product used, the soil conditions, when you planted the plot, etc. Thanks! [/ QUOTE ] I'd go with the "throw & grow" from evolved habitat. Yesterday evening I saw several deer hammering my "shot plot" brassica made by the same company. I nearly gave up on planting brassica all together if it wasn't for Todd, the poster above. I believe different companies use different variaties of brassica plants. I've planted "no plow" several times with ease but the deer didn't eat it much. This is my first season planting EH's brassica in the same place & the deer are hammering it. My suggestion would be "throw & grow". You only need about 4 hours of sun light per day & you can usually buy it at Wal Mart very cheap. 10-14$ per bag for .5 acre. While the "now plow" is like 30$ for .5 acre.
  3. Re: Mowed down Shot Plot!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should some how set a trail camera up with a 2x4 on th edge of the cotton field if you have a camera. That is really awesome & it gets me excited because my shot plot is starting to get hit pretty hard. Plus the night time temps will be falling into the teens this weekend. Good pic!!!!!
  4. Re: Rubs scrapes & food plot pictures(lots of pics [ QUOTE ] looks great did you plant using farm equipment or did you use a toebehind? i have some areas on my property that i would like to plant but am not sure how to. i dont have the access to the equipment thanks [/ QUOTE ] I have all the equipment to use with my 4 wheeler. Disc, drag, roller, spreader ect ect, but the corn fields get so hard & dry here in Aug/Sept that the past 2 years a farmer disced this spot for me with a large tractor & disc. The corn stalks are too hard for my disc its not heavy enough. After he breaks the ground I try to wait a day or 2 before a good rain & I use my 4 wheeler to fertilize & seed. If you don't have access to equipment you may want to ask a farmer or someone with access to a tractor or 4 wheeler to do the same thing. After the ground is broken its just a simple matter of getting the fertilizer & seed in the soil.
  5. Re: Best 270 round for Whitetails I shoot Remington Accu Tip 130 grain bullets in my .270 when I hunt with it. They were DEVESTATING on the 2 whitetails I shot with them.
  6. Re: Rubs scrapes & food plot pictures(lots of pics) Thanks guys, alot of hard work went into making these plots. I did it all alone pretty much. The temps are suppose to dip way down tomorrow & all of next week, so we'll see what happens the last month of the season here.
  7. Well guys I can say that I'm pleased with my food plot combination this year. I planted 1.5 acres of food plot & the deer have been devouring my oats & they've hit my rye, clover & chicory hard to. They also started to hit my "shot plot" really good until the weather turned hot again. The only thing that's hampered me has been the weather on deer movement. Its been in the high 70s & 80s much of November so I haven't seen alot of rutting activity during the day by mature deer. But everytime I use this stand I see no less than 10 deer. Mature does, submissive does, fawns & immature bucks. Here is the entire plot. On the far right is .5 acre of oats, the .5 acre on the left is rye, clover & a little chicory. In the background is a .5 acre of shot plot. Close up of the oats Shot Plot brassica Off to the right about 50 yards down is a huge scrape thats still being used Turnips & tracks I like to think of this as Brassica & Oat Crossing..... If you look to the left at the big pine tree with the no tresspassing sign, its a trail that the deer never used until both these plots came up. They love to stand & sort of like congregate right in the middle here then go left or right. Here is a fresh rub & scrape just off the plot. It wasn't there last week & with the hot temps it must have been done at night. Here is a different scrape & 1 more nice rub & a cluster of rubs all 20 yards apart. These are just on the inside of the woods And here is my favorite Nov/late December stand over looking the plots. I'm ready for some cold nasty winter weather. Hope you guys enjoy these pics.
  8. Re: ice/snow storm If Ok looks anything like what I just saw on TV in Missouri the deer should hammer that plot. It looks like a mess in Missouri right now with a very bad ice & snow storm.
  9. Re: MY WIFE HATE THE DEER HUNTING SEASON!!! I'm a lucky man. My girlfriend embraces my hunting activities!!!!!
  10. Re: Ok, I did it!! Blaze orange..the controversy. [ QUOTE ] Here in MS it is mandetory durring rifle season. It is my understanding even if you are squirrel hunting durring rifle season, or bow hunting you must wear hunters orange durring rifle season. For me making hunters orange maditory is kinda like making wearing a seat belt manditory. They are looking out for you. In a perfect world we wouldn't need hunters orange. Everyone would practice safe firearm safty, know what there target is and know what is behind thier target. But unforturnatley we do not live in a perfect world. When squirrel hunting with a buddy i have noticed how hard it is to pick him out in the woods even though i know he is there. If he doesn't move it's hard to see him. It not so much getting mistaken by a deer that concerns me as shooting at a deer and not seeing the hunter standing behind it. And of course you have these nuckleheads out there that shoot a bushes moving, dark spots, ect. Hunters orange saves lives. If you don't wear it you are taking your life in your own hands. I'm not sure but i think hunters orange is required to be worn on public land even if you are not hunting. I know my surveying crew weres it durring hunting season to keep from getting shot while surveying. [/ QUOTE ] Here in SC the law was changed a few years back. Orange is only required on certain federal land, but if you shoot another hunter you are going to pay a stiff price. If you were born after 1980 everyone has to take a hunter education course. I believe that course was put in place so hunters wouldn't have to wear the orange. After taking this class, if you do shoot another hunter by accident the law will come down hard on you like you did it on purpose.
  11. Re: lets hear about those crazy predator stories! [ QUOTE ] Well, while sitting in the deer stand today(only saw 4does) i was thinking about predator encounters on the way in & out to your deer stand, lets hear about those close encounters, and for those NC hunters, any rutting activity? Down here in Chapel hill its gonna get real cold next week, so it should get good hopefully next week, thanks for your time. [/ QUOTE ] The scariest predetor encounter I've ever had was a giant owl landing on my arm while I was in my treestand about 45 minutes before sun up. Nearly scared me to death. LOL!!!!! As for rutting, its been very frustrating here in SC this year. I've seen several big rubs & scrapes but I have not seen ONE buck chase or harrass any does during legal shooting hours. Several guys that I've talked to haven't said the same thing. Hopefully the cold weather you mentioned next week will make them do something. The past 2 years I've shot my biggest bucks in December.
  12. Re: Ok, I did it!! Blaze orange..the controversy. [ QUOTE ] i think if you are hunting private land where no one else is hunting i believe you shouldnt have to wear it .... they say deer cant see it but i dont believe that one bit !!!! i know they see it......game land another story becuase you dont know whats going to happen in there. [/ QUOTE ] I agree with him. I have only used blazed orange once & I felt like I was naked. I think its fine if you're quail hunting or doing a deer drive something like that, but I don't feel its neccessary to wear orange when deer hunting from a treestand or even stalking deer on private land.
  13. Re: Hey guys, be careful out there & AT HOME Totally agree, I don't even ride with a loaded rifle or shotgun in my truck.
  14. Re: How do you know you made a good shot? Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!! Great deer. I love the chocolate colored antlers on Canadian whitetails.
  15. This is a truly sad story. I once came inside the house with a loaded shotgun when I was about 17 & my dad tore into me so bad. I've never even thought about doing it since. Glad he did what he did what he did. http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/news/breaking_news/16119164.htm
  16. Re: 7mm Rem Mag Deer Load I shoot Winchester 140 grain ballistic silver tips in mine, but I only hunt with it if I'm hunting big bean or corn fields. If you are shooting closer "under 200 yards" I'd go with the plain old Remington core lokts.
  17. Re: which rifle??? [ QUOTE ] Welcome to the forums. I like both the browning a bolt and the 700. Both are good rifles. [/ QUOTE ] I'm with WT both are good rifles. I have 3 Remingtons & I also have a Browning 7mm A bolt. You can't go wrong with either IMO.
  18. Re: how long was your shortest hunt? My shortest hunt ever was exactly 1 minute. About 7 years ago I overslept for a November rut hunt I had been looking forward to all week. It was 8:30 in the morning when I woke up, I was so disgusted with myself I didn't even take a shower, I just packed my stuff real quick & drove to my land. I got there, parked & sorta moped to my stand. It was exactly 9:15 a.m. when I climbed into a stand over looking a corn field. THE MOMENT by butt hit the chair a big 9 point crashed out of the woods with his nose straight up in the air like he was smelling for does. He was 50 yards from me & I took the shot with my Rem 7400 .06. He ran in a 20 yard circle & fell dead exactly where I shot him. I looked at my watch it was 9:16 a.m. As crazy as it sounds that's the shortest hunt I've ever been on.
  19. Re: Whats your flavor? For years I hunted with a Rem 7400 30.06, but now my favorite rifle is my Rem 700 SS Bolt 30.06.
  20. Re: Rain! Let, you guys are feeling the effects of La Ninya or how ever its spelled. Its the reverse of el ninyo. We've had cooler temps & drought here in the south, while you guys have had mild tems for the area with alot of moisture. Sorry you're getting flooded out.
  21. Re: Neck shots High in the shoulder works every time for me. I use to shoot deer behind the shoulder & I lost a big 8 I shot behind the shoulder at 160 yards. He ran off & I never found him. I've never taken neck shots because its too risky. I always aim for high in the shoulder. Its safer than a neck shot because its a bigger target & hitting them in the shoulder drops them in their tracks every time.
  22. Re: Brother-in-law\'s 1st Deer w/pics!!!! Nice pic & congrats to him. Keep trying Ky, you'll get your chance, his just came much sooner than yours.
  23. Re: Flashlight? For blood tracking I use a Garrity high beam flash light with a blue cap. That thing looks like a blue lightsaber from Star Wars when its on in the pitch black. I use a stream light lens pen when leaving from my stand & I use a green light.
  24. Re: Rain! We're going to get hammered with some rain tonight. I'm going to put some 32-0-0 on my shot plot at lunch time. It exploded with growth about 2 weeks ago after a hard rain & I expect it to do the same after tonight.
  25. Re: Blood Tracking Flash Light I have a blood tracking flash light I bought at Wal Mart for 12 bucks. Its a Garrity aluminum flashlight with a changeable red for blue lens cover. Red or night vision & blue for blood tracking. Garrity Blood Tracking Lights
