  1. Awesome pics. That's a great buck. Nothing looks wrong with that shot to me.
  2. Hey guys thanks for the compliments. Here are the pictures of the buck. BTW I hunt near Santee SC, down near Santee Cooper.
  3. Thank you!!!! He's already at the taxidermist I'm getting a right turn mount.
  4. The deer season for me in 2007 has been one of paitence. And the old saying is true. "Good things come to those who wait." Friday 11-23 the day after Thanksgiving I went hunting about 4pm. Got up in my stand & hadn't seen anything for an hour. I did in fact see several turkey buzzards gliding over head the entire afternoon. Alot of things started running through my head. Rifle season started here Sept 1st I've passed on a few bucks I know other hunters would have shot. A handsome immature 8 who's just not ready & another tall racked big necked 6 pointer who will be a dandy buck next season if he survives. I was thinking to myself should I have shot those deer. Here it is Nov 23rd & I haven't pulled the trigger once since Sept. Well about 20 minutes before legal time was over 7 does entered the field. My girlfriend was sitting on the other side of the woods & radioed to me that another deer was following the does but she couldn't make out what it was. Sure enough about 10 minutes before legal time was over this big boy showed up at 135 yards away behind the does & started to walk in the opposite direction. I blew on my grunt tube & he started to walk back in my direction from my right to left. I raised my 270 & put the crosshairs right on his shoulder. With his nose to the ground he wouldn't stop walking & he was just 80 yards away. I had to make 3 or 4 grunts with my mouth & finally the 4th time he stopped dead in his tracks & looked in my direction. My heart pounding I squeeze off a shot. He took off, I watched to where he ran then sat & waited about 20 minutes. By this time it was pitch dark. I found him laying at the edge of the woods & come to find out he's an 11 point that weighed 193lbs. 270 Winchester AccuBonds did the trick.
  5. Thats some good advice. I've been hunting a long time & have never seen a mature buck in the mornings during a full moon. They move IN THE WOODS mid day & they feed in fields during last light during a full moon. The new or dark moon is best for hunting fields in the mornings. I don't know why but every big buck I've seen in the morning its been during a new or dark moon.
  6. Thanks Leo that makes a ton of sense.
  7. I'd totally agree with these guys. Clover & Chicory.
  8. Just needed some input from you rifle experts here & I know a couple of you own Tikka rifles. What causes the price difference between a Tikka & Sako rifle? I was over on Tikka's/Beretta's website last night. I find the prices on their rifles incredible compared to that of Sako rifles. Here is the catch, Tikka rifles & Sako rifles come off the same assembly line. One is branded with the name Tikka the other Sako. All metal Tikka parts are the same as Sako metal. Tikka says they gauarntee all their rifles will put 3 shots inside of an inch at 100 yards combined with a smooth bolt action. I went to the Sako sight & it says the exact same thing. I want a 300 wsm. I love all my Remingtons & Brownings but I want a good European style rifle. Why is the Tikka Synthetic 640$ when the Sako Synthetic is 1560$. What am I missing here?
  9. Not sure if you are hunting with a gun or bow, but here is what I would suggest. Buy some estrous urine "I like code blue or either special golden estrus by wildlife reasearch" & some buck urine. I wouldn't use any "dominant" buck urine unless he's an aggressive buck & you've found violent rubs nearby. Get a 2 headed drag rag set. Put some estros urine on 1 & put some regular buck urine on the other. Walk along where you've seen that deer. If you can walk a path leading back to your stand or to a shooting lane where you want him to go. After you've done that with your drag, hang 2 scent wicks on a tree or brush in that shooting lane. 1 wick in buck urine the other in estrous urine. I plan to do this same thing this coming weekend for a big buck I've spotted twice. Once he was intimidating younger bucks the other time I saw him he was following some does. As for calls, I LOVE "the can" by primos, the original one & a regular grunt tube to sound like a grunting buck.
  10. Buck #2 has more character in his rack but I'd shoot buck #1.
  11. Where I hunt its a FACT moon phases have an affect on how deer move. I've been hunting & keeping notes on my property about the weather & moon phases for 10 years. I've yet to see any mature bucks during a full moon when I hunt early mornings. Not 1 in 10 years. In fact thats why I didn't go this morning. During a full moon deer normally move mid day or right at dark. The best times to hunt the traditional pre dawn dusk times is during during a 1st quarter or completely dark moon. Every mature buck I've shot in the morning has been a 1st quarter or completely dark moon. The biggest bucks I've ever seen but didn't get a chance to shoot were during these times. The first 3 weekends in November this year are going to be awesome times to be in the whitetail woods. Particularly Nov 7th-12th. Full moons even affect fish feeding patterns. During the summers I love to go bass fishing at night on a full moon with any sort of black top water lure. All that being said, if you just love to hunt & want to get out there go anytime to enjoy yourself.
  12. The only thing I can suggest is Parkers Antifog solution. I use it for when it gets very cold in the mornings & the heat from my face use to fog my binoculars. Haven't had a problem since. Also be very careful about using products such as rain x & glycerin on your scopes & binoculars. Your lenses are covered with special coatings to help you see better in low light & some coatings are used to keep out stray light. Using stuff like rain x you could be damaging the scope or binocular lenses by wiping the coatings off. Try Parkers solution its specifically made for scope & binocular lenses. http://www.parkersperfect.com/intro_frameset.htm
  13. I went hunting this morning with my .270. It has a stainless steel barrel. As I was glassing looking at deer it slid down the shooting rail on my stand & smacked the rail behind me pretty hard. Hard enough that deer 200 yards away heard it. On the top of the barrel its a nasty sratch & nick. Normally I wouldn't let this bother me but this is a pretty bad nick on the top of the barrel. Anyone know how I can get rid of this without polishing or is their some sort of silver polish i could use to fill the sratch in? I know their are several blueing products & even some blueing pens out there. But this is a stainless steel barrel. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  14. It really depends & I know exactly how you feel. It depends on a couple of things, who FSU is playing, what time of year it is, time of the game & the weather. I didn't go hunting last Saturday because we were playing Alabama in a pretty historic game. The weather here was in the high 80s along with a full moon. That usually equals bad news. If we are playing a team like Duke I'm going hunting. I wish ABC or ESPN would either schedule our games at noon or at 8 pm. The 3:30 kickoffs suck. Unless we are playing Miami, I'm going hunting the last week of October & the first 2 weeks of November.
  15. Nope!!! If you got the money & can afford them buy them. I just bought a 280. Did I need the gun? No, I just wanted it because of the calibur's reputation & looks of the rifle. I'm going to buy a turkey gun in Jan or Feb, probably an Xetrema2. Then I'm going to start looking for a 300wsm.
  16. Well hopefully my safe will be like that some day. And again guys thanks for the all the compliments!!!!
  17. It won't sit in my vault to collect dust. I'll hunt with it, but I know exactly what you mean about getting it uglied up. Hahahaha
  18. That was the situation with me. I have a 270 & a couple of 06s but I've always wanted a 308 but I got to thinking about the .280. I chose this gun simply because its beautiful, limited edition & because of the ballistics. Carmichel wrote that if a guy is torn betweening chosing a 270 or 30.06 or wanted something in between he should buy a 280. You guys know how things are. Guns to most of us are like shoes to women.
  19. Hey lead, we're down right now, but the new coaching staff will get us back to the top!
  20. Hey guys thanks for all the kind words. I'll defenitely let you know how she shoots this winter. Also to, it was some others on here looking for this exact gun. PM me & I will give you the name of a place where you can order it online for a reasonable price. I've seen this same exact rifle out of the box being offered for upwards to 900$, which is WAY OVER PRICED.
  21. I'm so pysched guys. Just bought a very beautiful rifle. A Remington 700 LSS 50th Anniversay 280.I'm in total love with this gun!!!!! The look & the feel. I haven't put any glass on top of it yet but I'll probably do that around Christmas. I don't want to rush buying a scope, I want something to fit this gun perfectly. Got a question for you guys though. Why the heck isn't the 280 as popular as the 270? I was shooting another 280 over the weekend & the performance was just as good as my 270 with very little recoil difference if any. Some people "gun writer for Outdoor Life Jim Carmichel & Dave Petzel at Field & Stream" swear the 280 is just as good as the 270 or slightly better. I've only met 1 guy who owns one. Is it just a case of a particular shell not having a catchy name? How many .280 owners do we have here?
  22. Thanks WT, I think you're right. So far I found red tips to be the best but if anyone else has a shrub to suggest let me know.
