  1. Re: Evolved Harvest Shot Plot Well I can vouch for shot plot myself. I planted some back on Sept 30. The past 2 times that I've hunted the plot 14 deer have been spotted in it eating.
  2. Re: Hillary Clinton President in 2008 [ QUOTE ] The people ousted the Republicans in 2006 because they left their roots. The dems are already looking to waste countless tax dollars investigating a naturally occurring event where people were too STUPID to leave before a category 5 storm, supposed torture, etc. I think that Newt will be the savior of the party with his Reagan message. I am sorry but if it were Hillary versus John McCain, I would vote for Hillary. That man is a low down rotten back stabber that screwed the president over many times siding with the democrats. New [/ QUOTE ] You have to look what Bush & Rove did to McCain back in 2000 during the SC primary. McCain was ahead & was going to win here until the Bush campaign ran massive negative ads courting religious conservatives. McCain was very POed about it. He smiles about it now publicly but I think he remembers it.
  3. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] That's pretty funny. A 338 win mag in the south. [/ QUOTE ] Seems perfectly logical to me. [/ QUOTE ] Strut, there is nothing in the southern woods that would require a .338 win mag. Unless you come across Bigfoot or something. LOL!!!!! Yes we have black bears & stuff but any fast .30, 7mm or .270 will kill any bear below the mason dixon line. A 300 win mag is WAY TOO MUCH gun for hunting down here much less a .338. The only logical reason I could even see anyone using a .300 is if you're in a flat place like Texas taking 400 yard shots or if you're taking 400 yard shots in some of the bean fields down south. Just my 2 cents.
  4. Re: Hillary Clinton President in 2008 [ QUOTE ] If the Republicans are going to run a serious candidate in '08.............they have to find someone who is "media-proof". Too many people believe the evening news without thinking. We report, you decide.............let's just watch. The GOP just got kicked in the gonads.............that's not a killing shot. But, it does make you think. God bless the Mexicans............ JJL [/ QUOTE ] The problem with a republican candidate in 08 is that their is no "true" conservative to run. John McCain is not a true conservative in the social sense. He's for the right to chose & I think he's for civil unions. He's very moderate on social issues, but he is a fiscal conserative. Guliani is VERY pro gay rights & he's very pro choice. Romney, the guy in Mass is a mormon. I'm not saying anything is wrong with that, but that will bother many in the republican base. Newt Gringrich would get slaughtered. He's a polorizing figure & he still carries too much baggage. George Allen ruined his chances when he used the racial slur in Virginia. The 3 I mentioned before Gingrich are the mostly likely but they will have problems because they won't appeal to the evangelic wing of the republican party. Republicans have let evangelicals box them into trying to legislate religion in people's lives & this last election showed that the country wants a more moderate government to focus on other issues. The abortion bill in SD was defeated, the stem cell research passed & gay married ban was defeated in Az, McCain's home state. Politicians need to learn that the far left nor the far right is where most voters are on the issues. I don't know if Hillary Clinton will win in 08 but she's sure learned that lesson. She's sure tried to govern from the center since she took over being a senator.
  5. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? [ QUOTE ] I have several magnums in my safes. I try to buy two to three new rifles a year, but sometimes I only get one. Most of them are still in the boxes never opened. I hunt the so called "northern deer" as well antelope, elk, and muleys every season. The largest rifle I have set up to hunt is an old BDL Remington Chambered in 7mm Rem mag. I haven't used it in years. My go to rifles are the 243, 25-06, 257wby mag, and the .308 win. I have taken many many animals with the .308 win and some were at rather impressive distances. If you look at the numbers of the .308 win you'll notice they are very, very similar to that of the 30-06 and in thesame case as the 7mm-08, 260, and the 243. I have no problems with hunters shooting the big guns but it does seem like overkill when you hear of a southern hunter shooting a 30 cal belted magnum. Do what you want though. I have a very dear friend that lives in Miami Florida and unts in southern Ga and insists on shooting a .338 win mag for everything. I just chuckle when he mentions that gun and go on about my business. To each his own I guess. [/ QUOTE ] That's pretty funny. A 338 win mag in the south.
  6. Re: Stainless Vs. Blued?? To be honest I like my fiberglass SS guns better. They seem to resist scratches & weather better than blue barrel wood guns & they don't need a whole lot of maintence. All I do is wipe mine down with a silicon cloth after every hunt & its ready to go for the next hunt.
  7. Does anyone here know if a supplemental feeding trough can be bought? Or does it have to be built? I could buy one built for live stock but naturally I can use it for deer. I was looking to purchase something like this.
  8. Re: Imperial No Plow [ QUOTE ] Have any of you used the Imperial No Plow food plot mix, if so what are your thoughts. Also does Imperial have a wesite? Thanks! [/ QUOTE ] I've used it 3 or 4 times. To be totally honest & fair, the stuff is very easy to plant. All you have to do is spray then run over an area with a disc fertilize then broadcast the seed. It comes up really fast but the deer in my area didn't care for that particular brand of brassica plant. I planted no plow in 2 different counties in 3 seasons & the deer didn't eat it, even after a frost. I've had much better luck with Tecomate's "ultra forage" brassica. I planted some "shot plot" this year & deer are eating that way better than the no plow.
  9. Re: Tinks Scent Bomb users... I use unscented cotton balls in them instead of buying new ones year after year.
  10. Re: 140\" or better.. How many have U seen in your life 1
  11. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? [ QUOTE ] Our deer around here average 100-125lbs. A GOOD doe will weight over 100. They’re small compared to the monsters up north. I’ve shot a .30-06 for several years and even considered that overkill. Recently I was talking with a buddy of mine. He told me he bought a .300wsm. I asked if he got a good deal on it and if he was going Elk hunting? It was an honest question. He looked at me with a blank expression and said, “No, its for deer hunting.” Turns out he didn’t even get a good deal. He paid full price for the rifle. This completely boggles my mind. He had not intention of every hunting elk or large animals like black bear, yet he buys a cannon. Also, the ammo price far surpasses what many consider standard deer cartridges (.243, .260, .270, .280, 30-30, .308, .30-06, etc). I know it’s repetitive but why? If you’re up north shooting 300lb deer at 300yds fine. Around here 125lbs is respectable and I’ve never shot a deer over 300yds. In fact I’ve only shot one over about 150yds. Now this guy is going to punish his wallet and shoulder for absolutely no reason! Get a good bullet with great expansion and weight retention and just about any cal listed above, not to mention many that weren’t listed, will kill anything walking around Oklahoma. If he was going looking for elk or bear, fine. But under the circumstances I just don’t get it…… [/ QUOTE ] I think guys do it because they want the instant drop dead in their tracks kill shot. I met a guy at a gun shop about 5 years ago buying a beautiful Browning Abolt 300 win mag. He said he was hunting with a 06 & was tired of the deer running off after being shot. I guess I looked at him like he was stupid. I've seen alot of animals on tv from whitetail, muley & elk fall dead in their tracks after being shot with a 300. Matter of fact I saw on Gore Tex Outdoors about 3 weeks back, this guy shot a muley at 250 yards on the side of a mountain & the deer just fell & turned right side up with his hoofs sticking straight up in the air. That animal fell like that because of good bullet selection & proper shot placement. I myself want to buy a 300 wsm for future trips out west for things like elk & muleys, I wouldn't use it here in SC. No need for it.
  12. Re: ignorant people This use to happen to me all the time. That's why I dislike hunting near public roads. Suprisingly it would be other "hunters" or people who were upset they couldn't coon hunt my land that would blow the horn all the way down the road when they'd see my truck.
  13. Re: 2 with 1 shot? I've done it before with my 30.06. Back when I was about 19 I was hunting in a ground blind in a cut soybean field. The deer would walk through this field to get to a corn field on the other side of a small patch of timber. Several does came walking in the field when I decided to take an easy 60 yard broadside shot on the largest. Right as I squeezed the trigger another doe darted behind my target. Upon firing it was a huge dust cloud on the ground behind the entended doe I was shooting at. She ran & fell about 10 yards while the deer standing behind her dropped in its tracks. The doe I was shooting at was well clear. Its one of those freak things that happen.
  14. Re: Dumb dogs [ QUOTE ] This evening i had 2 dogs follow me all the way to my stand. Neither had tags on. One was a brown coon dog looked like a good dog. The coon dog got up close to me while i was getting to my stand and growled i turned arounda busted that thing with a stick. They ran off and didnt mess my hunt up any. I dont know what to do about them tho i dont knwo who owns them if anyone. [/ QUOTE ] LOL!!!! I've done the same thing the past 3 weeks. About 3 weeks ago 2 beagles came to where I park my truck & watched me get my gear & stuff. They then followed me half way to one of my stands. I kept trying to shoo them away until I picked up a piece of clumped mud & threw it at them. They left. Last week I went to check on my food plots & the same 2 dogs followed me to the plots & I had to hit one with a stick. It was a small branch, nothing to seriously injure him. They took off, haven't seen them since.
  15. Re: Quality Optics I've never used Steiner products but they are German so the quality is probably really good. For 1,000$ I'd stick with more popular well known European brands with great reputations. Zeiss, Swarovski & Leica. They all make a heck of a binocular. For 1k Zeiss has a 10x50 thats really good. I myself have a pair of 10x42 Kahles & they are a great set of glass. I love the winged cup eyepiece that block out all stray light when looking through them. I got mine at a great price well under 1,000 bucks though.
  16. Re: Speaking of the rut, how many of you........... Thanks for the info guys. I've been mentally preparing myself to sit all day. We've got a full moon the first weekend of Nov. Nov 4th. I plan to place a couple of scent wicks out & just sit all day. I just bought one of those world band radios with an ear piece. I'll be able to listen to a number of college football games in one ear & listen out with my other ear. Actually I'm going to try an all day sit on Nov 4th & Nov 18th. A full moon & a completely dark moon. Again thanks for the info from everyone.
  17. Sit all day? I've never done it before but this year I'm going to. I usually get to my stand an hour before sunrise & I sit until about 10 a.m. I've read countless books & articles about guys sitting all day in places like Canada with great success. I was just wondering how many of you sit in your stand from sun up until sun down? If you have done this, have you taken any deer during the middle of the day? What do you guys take to snack on & how do you relieve yourself in the woods?.
  18. Re: Zeiss conquest scopes? [ QUOTE ] I've looked through them twice now at Bass Pro and either it's just me or they are very bright and clear. I'm saving for one now. [/ QUOTE ] You aren't imagining things. They are very very clear, very good scope to hunt with in low light. Alot of people don't know it but Zeiss has been making scopes about 150 years but that isn't all they do. They make glass for microscopes, glass for NASA and a bunch of other stuff. Building a great rifle scope is on their lists of "easy things to do".
  19. Re: Got my plots done finally!!!! It bright and sunny today, the high will be 83, tomorrow will be 85 & more rain is expected this Sunday. Things are looking good right now.
  20. Re: Scent Control Hunting Boots [ QUOTE ] I just use a pair of rubber botos and they work just fine..i spray them down on the soles of my feet and i feel confident..works for me [/ QUOTE ] I agree with what he said. I do think that scent control clothing helps control your scent, but I think the boots are a gimmick. You can create your own scent controlled rubber boots. What I do is I sprinkle unscented powder in my socks before I go into the woods so my feet won't sweat on warm days & I bought a pair of carbon odor eaters from wal mart for 4$. I spray the soles of my boots with scent killer before I start to the stand. That's always worked for me.
  21. Re: Zeiss conquest scopes? Very very good scope. The conquest line is NOT Zeiss' top of the line scope. The top of the line category is the Zeiss "Victory line" which IMO is even better than anything Swarovski makes. But the conquest is more than capable for most hunting situations in the USA. The Conquest line is priced to compete with the Nikon Leupold VX III market staring at 399.
  22. Re: What kind of rifle do you hunt with? Rem 30.06 Rem .270 Rem 7400 Browning 7mm Soon to be Sako 75 greywolf or Tikka Lamenanted in 308 or 300 win mag
  23. Re: scopes made or assembled in USA What about Weaver scopes aren't they made in the USA?
  24. Re: plots are some needing rain Man I know how some of you are feeling. I planted some stuff nearly 10 days ago & I've gotten no germination. None notta!!! But yesterday we got drenched with rain & it rained again all day today. I wish you guys the best of luck. I know how it is to wait all year to hunt, then to work hard at creating a plot only to have the weather not cooperate.
  25. Re: Got my plots done finally!!!! It poured rain here all day Sunday & its still drizzling this morning & still cloudy. My plots should really take off now!!!!!!!
