  1. Honestly, the best thing that works for me is a 10 minute hot shower with absolutely no soap the night before. I wash my clothes in baking soda and then let them hang dry outside. I've used just about every product on the market. What I can tell you is the scentless bar soap is the absolute worst!! I have been busted so many times using that, in my opinion, it should be illegal. Nothing more frustrating than total and complete scent discipline using scentless bar soap and getting busted just about every time. I've used several types of sprays and I can't say they worked or didn't work. Never had a time where I used it and a deer walked downwind of me. I also can't remember ever getting a deer after spraying myself down with that stuff.
  2. I'm curious what platform you are using - hopefully not phpbb. Looking forward to seeing the change.
  3. I owned a summit, they are heavy, very loud and unbelievable comfortable. You may be tempted to leave it in the woods during the middle of the day. I did this but had mine stolen even after I hid it. Had another stolen from the bed of my truck. Darn it they were comfortable, though. If you're going to go with a climber, get the best and protect it. Pack it in and out of the woods every time.
  4. I sent her a message myself. She'll ignore it, but I sent one.
  5. My Message: I would just like to remind you that your decision to pass HB4040 (reaffirming the ODFW Commission Wolf Delisting decision) through will be a positive thing and your leadership will positively affect surrounding states. I may be from Illinois, but I often visit Montana, Minnesota, North Dakota and Washington State. The wolves are a serious issue to those that live in those states just as the wolf issue is a serious issue in Oregon for people that live there. Allowing hunting of wolves will allow the Dept of Natural Resources to include wolves in management efforts. It is not just hunting wolves, it is the preservation of Elk, Deer, Rabbits and potentially human beings - which have been attacked and will be attacked in the future if wolves are not managed responsibly.
  6. I'm curious about Eotech sights and their quality. I have an AR that I haven't done much with and was thinking about a holographic sight to continue my MOUT training from military (clearing rooms). ... just fun stuff. I have about 5 acres I plan on creating sort of an obstacle course to train for 3-gun competitions, etc. To start off, it seems that EOtech is affordable, but wondering about their quality. I've read reviews and stuff, but wanted to post on here. Also considering Aimpoint as well. Do you guys have experience with Eotech sights, any info on warranties, do they stand by their products etc.? Thanks Guys!!
  7. I sort of helped with this How-To Guide a while ago. I think it is appropriate given the time of year. Keith Warren is a cool guy and creates really informative videos for us at OP. Best Knife for Field Dressing - A How To Guide
  8. Link is broken: I added this from Mathews XT Man's suggestion http://www.opticsplanet.com/nikon-pr...iflescope.html
  9. Tough luck, but glad you found him. I would definitely mount him and with a cape. My personal preference is to have it look like a deer while on the wall. Please post a pic when finished.
  10. Plant winter wheat and hunt muzzleloader or late season for those big bucks - they survived.
  11. Not sure if this was posted on here yet, but I just read through about 15 blog posts from this study. The goals and objectives for this study address the information needs and research questions of each collaborator. Test the assumption that FIA categorical deer impact levels accurately reflect the effect of deer browsing on forest conditions. Identify modifications that could improve the accuracy of monitoring programs of forest conditions in relation to deer browsing. Evaluate the effectiveness of DMAP to increase antlerless harvest in a local area. Monitor hunter behavior and attitudes in response to changes in deer abundance. Test the ability of DCNR’s Vegetation Impact Protocol to detect changes in vegetation in response to changes in deer abundance. Current funding will support the project for the period 2013-2017. Four study areas (see maps), ranging in size from 25 to 40 square miles, have been selected – one each in Rothrock State Forest and Bald Eagle State Forest and two in Susquehannock State Forest. Movements of male and female deer, reports on weather related movements, rut movements, hunter pressure, and the like. Read through some of the blog posts beginning in 2013. Here are a few: New! 14. I haven't had a handgun since college (many years ago). Just picked up my new .40. Haven't shot it yet, likely will this weekend at a range in Indiana. Couldn't be happier with the purchase (Thank you tax check which finally came 6 months late). Just wanted to post how nice it is. Next step: CCW in Illinois. :2guns: Here is Hickok45 doin' his thing on YouTube:
  15. What a lucky person you are to have had your parents for so long. It is never an easy thing to lose a parent regardless of age. My condolences - sincerely.
  16. Gentleman, I am in need of volunteers to help edit a large list of shooting and gun definitions that I wanted to create for a page on one of my sites. I have 550 words, but I need volunteers to help create similar, but original definitions for many of these words. Any takers? Volunteers? Any help would be great! I can send 30-100 definitions per person. Thanks!!! [email protected]
  17. So glad I bought the two other trail cameras. This doe, not far off my land in Illinois, was evading me for soooo long. I put the trail cameras on city property to see how they were moving and I was totally off. Along the hill on my side, close to a baseball field they had been sneaking just past the easy opening to my plot. Bow-hunting only on my land; so as long as they come in for my winter wheat to refuel, I may be looking at some decent does for the freezer in December. I patterned a few does in July and waited last night to see if I could get a could shot with my phone camera. This doe, I followed her for 15 minutes, could not have cared less that I was walking parallel along with her while I had my girlfriend's dog on leash. Really amazing! I wish I had a better camera on my phone.. lol. 82 degrees with 20mpg winds, @ 7:20pm. Wondering what the lights are? Very close to the town baseball fields (hence the bow-only hunting), which is why this doe was not at all skittish about seeing me.
  18. Rhino, totally agree about the timing. I had so much success with this in the beginning (2002-2005) that I tried to use it all the time and it just doesn't work unless it is (midwest) October 15-20th until November 7-10th. At least in my experience.
  19. Hunting Lure Strategy by Lou Storiale This was only my second deer ever, a nice 10 point buck. Many deer have been taken with this strategy by me and my friends. Most of the deer have been bucks and 2 wall hangers to-boot. Purchase two bottles of doe-in-heat urine attractant like Tinks#69 Obtain a gallon of water and empty 1/4 (roughly 30 ounces) of the water OR pour hot water into a gallon jug about 3/4 full (Hot Water Is Best) Empty both bottles of doe-in-heat urine into the gallon jug and mix well Take 2 wash rags (preferably without scent or at least ones that are clean) 1 Rope about 4 feet long should thread through the corner of each rag used to drag the rag on the ground Dip and drench both rags in the mixture of hot water and doe-in-heat scent When near your hunting spot, drag the rags to your hunting spot from several destinations approximately 75 meters from your hunting spot to a designated area 30 yards from your tree stand or hunting blind. A Star pattern is best, all leading to the designated shooting area. Obviously paying special attention to well-worn trails. When finished , the rags should be placed about 30 yards from your tree stand in an open or semi-open area in a clear shooting lane. and dump the rest of the deer urine water around the bush and freshen up the rag. The rags should be placed approximately waist-high preferably in a bush where wind can pass through the rags to carry scent through the woods or hunting area. In other words, you do not want to let your "drag rags" get stuck on the side of a tree trunk (I've had it happen). Deer scents and drag rags should be used in this manner during the chase period immediately prior to the rut. This strategy does not mean that a deer will immediately walk up on your drag rag, but there will be deer coming in over the next 3 days to see what the hot scent is. Personally, I have used this method with great success, including my first buck taken with a bow and personal records shot by friends in 3 different states. In the Midwest United States this time is, approximately between October 21st - November 14th, depending on when the rut occurs. Some Deer Shot by This Method My first Deer with a Bow... He came in less than 30 seconds after I got in my stand and I shot him at 20 yards. My brother in law shot his first doe while she had her nose buried in the rag for over 2 minutes My buddy shot a 9 pointer coming in to the rag - the deer literally started dancing (jumping up and down) after smelling the rag My buddy's dad shot an 8 pointer that was fully gray (high racked 8 pointer) approximately 9 1/2 years old I shot a buck in the evening and my buddy shot a buck in the morning same stand, hunting over the same rag. Both deer came within 2 yards of each other (5 feet from the drag rag). Both ran to the same spot and dropped almost literally in the exact same spot.
  20. I have 1 trail camera, but am in the market for at least 2 more since I happen to think that there are 3 bucks taking an alternative route than the does in Mid October. I was looking on Amazon and Optics Planet. They are getting quite expensive, but there are deals to be had as the season approaches. I bought one 2 years ago - still going strong. This one was almost the same as Amazon.com, but committed to shooting and hunting. I liked the 10MP camera and HD recording. I am the kind of person that looks at products (of all kinds) that have good reviews, so I got this one: Stealth Deer Camera HD Video recording 5-180 seconds w/ audio 42 "BLACK" IR Emitters / 100ft range Burst Mode 1-9 images per triggering 0-59 sec / 1- 59 min recovery time out External LCD status display Time / Date / Moon Phase / Temperature SD Card slot up to 32GB Test Mode USB output Operates on 8 'AA' batteries External power jack for 12V battery box Durable weather proof housing 10.0 Megapixel (4 resolution)10mp/8mp/4mp/2.0mp HD Video recording 5-180 seconds w/ audio Time Lapse with PIR Override Reflex™ Trigger - .5 seconds 100ft range Intuitive backlit menu programming Matrix™ Advanced Blur Reduction Retina™ Low Light sensitivity 16:9 Wide Image Ratio Quick Set pre-programmed option GEO-TAG GPS Tagging Manual shot capability Secure Lock password protection There are only 2 items that I don't have (besides a gun now, only Bow) - a nice spotting scope for scouting and a 2nd and 3rd game camera. 126 Other Trail / Game Cameras
  21. Hey Guys, I wrote an article a couple weeks ago on how to choose a backpack, how to fit yourself, measure, material and more. Got it posted on Optics Planet. Tried to beat out REI.. we'll see. Your comments are welcome. I can still make changes.. 11 sections. Tell me what you think : http://www.opticsplanet.com/howto/how-to-choose-a-backpack.html
  22. I just happend to see Optics Planet has a bit of a charity thing going on... a portion of the profits going to Fisher House Foundation supporting military families. Decent deals!! and Good rifle scopes: I don't know if I can post a link but I'll give it a try:
  23. Because of Google Earth I was able to actually SEE the travel routes of deer in a particular area I had been hunting for 2 years. It was unbelievable, really. I'll be posting my deer hunting pics soon on here.
  24. Because of Google Earth I was able to actually SEE the travel routes of deer in a particular area I had been hunting for 2 years. It was unbelievable, really. Not useful for forest areas, but heavily traveled open areas that might not be viewable without contaminating an area with scent. Google Earth Rocks. I'll have to try the Pro version.
  25. I have been a member since 2003, actually even before that. Recently, the site has undergone a lot of changes, most for the better. However, there is one negative thing that I must mention regarding the forum. There is a preference created in the forum that determines how many threads are viewable and it likely goes by "last week" or something similar. It used to go by the top 20 or top 20 most recent posts or replies. The old way was better... WHY? Because it allowed more participation from members - the latest 20 posts showed 20 posts - not 3 posts. That is why there is less participation (even in February there used to be a lot more activity on here (which means, more products purchased, which means advertising dollars, PR - etc) Please change the designation in Vbulletin (its easy) - to top 20 most recent posts (or something similar) and you'll get more activity on here. P.S. Its not my settings, either... cause I logged out and checked the default as a guest so my preferences were not being accessed by Vbulletin. And yes, I've been in technology for a long time - so pardon the jargon. Peace and Love, Lou Storiale
