  1. LDB - great insights. Great post. Personally, I have never found a shed in my life... been out looking a few times, for hours once several years ago. I would love to come across even a moderate 6 point.
  2. Too much pizza this week. pizza, pizza, pizza
  3. Winchester has some great ammo - 150 grain ballistic tips for 30-06 is my favorite and the enemy of all deer in MN. I never thought ammo mattered until I tried the one stated above.. don't let this deter you from the brand.
  4. Fantastic!! What a great post, brother. This is my dream hunt. I didn't get to hunt this year, but 2014 is going to be a great year. I hope as great as this hunt.
  5. I hunt in MN, Indiana and Illinois. Deer seldom respond to rattling. In fact, I have yet to have a buck or a dow come in to rattling (after 12 years of hunting.).
  6. I have no preference. I would say that putting forth a system that allows complete silence. So whatever those windows are made out of... have it quiet (if you're close to the game).
  7. Getting here late, but congratulations on that deer!
  8. I saw one hit not far from Chicago (evanston, IL) All the forest preserves keep those babies protected.
  9. I would be paranoid that someone would grab those cameras
  10. I am jealous. I am always hunting out of state (indiana or Minnesota) and I regularly pay $150 for an either/or and always $75 for an additional doe tag. I need to move out of Illinois with their gestapo hunting regulations.
  11. I have one or two big ones, but these guys always take off around October 15th or so. Hopefully this year will be different.
  12. I would try to create a natural blind at least as an option. All they need to do is bust you once with a few deer around and you educated an entire herd. have at least an option of a blind in case the wind is NOT in your favor for the tree. I have had a lot of success hunting on the ground - specifically around pine trees. One year, the deer got so close I couldn't move without them seeing me. I couldn't pull back my bow and as soon as I twitched BOOM!! They were gone. Advantages and disadvantages to both, but one time is all it takes in that situation and you've got either a herd educated or need to take a week off of that place. One other option is put something in the tree that looks like someone is in there. They'll get used to a dark blog in the tree and won't think anything of it when you're sitting there "at the ready."
  13. I do that all the time. Good reminder! Thanks.
  14. Deer get 8 months off. Sundays are for other people to watch football and ME to be out in the woods sitting in their stands (public land, of course). I love hunting Sundays. Very peaceful. God is everywhere, not just in churches. Nature is the best place to be when the sun rises on a crisp Sunday morning.
  15. Yep, Montana was REALLY bad 3 years ago!! Antelope too, but I think that was the hard winter snow in March. Natures way, I guess.
  16. Fly is right, IMO. Full moon - hunt at Noon is a mantra of mine. You'll likely see a big buck. But that coincides with the get out early during a full moon. Get out really early. That is the only moon phase correlation that I have seen and I read every darn book on moon phases (both of them) a bunch of years back and was humbled and embarrassed when I told my buddies - they should be out this morning, its a "blah blah blah moon" - no one saw anything. That happened so many times during one season I bought a new rifle cause I thought I was jinxed. It was too warm... moon had nothing to do with it. scent control | keep as silent as possible | walk slowly (slow is smooth and smooth is fast) | and get out in the thickest nastiest area you can. That is your secret to hunting deer right there.
  17. Go with Muzzy's and don't look back. I've tried them all. ALL of them. Muzzy broadheads rock!
  18. Glad to hear it guys. Looking forward to seeing your work.
  19. Never have. Never thought about it. I might try that. I have a habit of always touching and tightening the broadheads while in a tree stand, anyway. Keeps my mind occupied.
  20. I remember a few years ago my niece had a father/daughter day for girl scouts. Her dad couldn't make it because of a national guard commitment. I went instead and was struck by how many guys were in camouflage. Then realized it was the first day of bow season. Wow!!! Poor planning on the girl scouts part, but kudos to all the dads that went with their daughters. They were GONE at EXACTLY the moment the event was over and tore out of there truck tires smokin' Ha Ha! Never had a day off cause of it and likely never will see it. I think PA might, though.
  21. Good luck and be safe. Can't wait to read the stories. Safety first!!! Good luck!
  22. Congratulations! glad to hear you were successful.
