Anyone have any luck using kool aid for a deer attractant? I've heard of people using the kool aid that just needs water and pouring it right out of the container over corn, a stump, or a salt block. If you've tried this, did it work? What flavor is best? Does anyone have any other tips or tricks on attracting deer? I've also heard of mixing sweet feed with corn. I'm trying to do things to bring more deer in eyesight for my children that will be in the blind with me. We've planted a total of 2 acres of soybeans, winter peas, rape, kale, turnips and wheat on the 16th.

Here's my dilemma, I had the ground ready to plant but before I could get them in the ground it has set into raining. Since the 17th of this month we have gotten, 2", 5/10", 7/10" that weekend, last weekend we got 2.25" and 7/10", and then this weekend we have gotten 8/10" and 1.2" and it's still raining and we have 80% chance the next 2-3 days. With the ground complete mud and not sure it will dry up to work again, would the seed make it if I just broadcast over the mud without working it in? I was planting winter peas, wheat, turnips, rape, kale I forgot to mention, we have high chances of rain every day this week.

Thank you dogdoc! Glad you answered the way you did. My dad is doing a perennial with the clover and I'm doing an annual plot without any clover. I already have a good clover plot, so I was just trying to offer other varieties to bring in more deer. My dad had already bought some seed, can he add pounds of the peas in place of the wheat? For example, change 50lbs of wheat to 25 and change the peas from 15lbs to 50? I'm still trying to learn how you decide how much of each and how you can add more of one and less of another. I have two 1/4 acre plots to plant and two 1/2 acres to plant that are all within gun range of my blind. Should I mix the Kale, 7 top turnips, rape, radishes all together and plant them or plant them separate to see what the deer prefer?
-
I visited my local seed store this weekend. He has the following seeds and I'm not to really sure how I should mix them (pounds or percentages). Jackhammer radish, Rape, Kale, Seven top turnips, ladino clover, wheat, and winter peas. Is it best to mix some of these, none of these, all of these and how much? I have been told not to mix and plant in sections so I could see what the deer preferred and when. I have also been told to mix them for better results, but that the winter peas need to be planted alone. On the plot in the woods, should I put winter peas in the center and plant something else along the edges that don't get as much sun?

Well what did you tell him? inquiring minds want to know. lol

Okay, so I planted wheat last fall and it is completely destroyed. The ground is still has some roots and is really rough from the dozer work. So I was thinking of working it up and putting in a couple varieties of food plots in for this season. Then putting the clover in during a frost or snow. What should I plant for this deer season, winter peas, wheat, turnips, or something else? When should I plant it?

Just curious if there is anything that would make me want to get the omega over the impact. Ease of loading, cleaning, shooting, etc.
-
The wife surprised me with a Thompson's Center Impact for Christmas, price $219.99. They have the Omega there for $379.99 in nickle/syn but the local Wal-mart has the Omega Z5 Rifle for $297.00 in black. What should a man do? Never used a muzzleloader before but looking to start.

I get 4+ hours on most of it, less along each side next to the woods. Another question, what is the main difference between ladino and white clover? Will any white clover do or do you have a certain variety I should use? Thanks, again Doc.
-
So what did you plant and how did it turn out? I cleared out about (2) one acre plots in the middle of my woods with a small 450 dozer trail connecting them to encourage deer travel. Is clover still my best choice or could I put something else in them? I already have another acre plot by one of them that has clover and it grows well. Also, Letmgrow, that website doesn't list Forrested Trail any more.

My dad is looking to get a GOOD electronic caller to use for coyotes but would also like to find one that can be used for various other animals. We have no experience with this type of call but we do know it helps bring in the coyotes. Money is not unlimited, but would like to find something that works really well and is worth the money when it comes to the speaker, remote controlled, various sounds/animals, etc . Any ideas or suggestions on what would be a good brand and model? Thank you in advance.

Praying that you have peace and strength. My condolences.

A friend has a mossberg 535 camo 12ga that shoots 2 3/4", 3", and 3 1/2". It has a limbsaver on the stock and a bushnell 1.5-4.5 scope. It has had a box of shells through it, what do you think is a decent price for the gun?

Thanks for the info and help. I really wouldn't care about the snakes, but I have three little ones now that love running around in the yard all day. CSPERRY, can you look that info up online also or is it only in their book?
-
I'm not the best at knowing snakes and I came across this one while mowing the yard. Anyone know what type it is? I know some say "The only good snake is a dead snake". However, I have heard that a king snake will eat poisonous snakes. Even if they do not, the have the same food source and I would rather have non-poisonous snakes around than I would one like the copperhead I killed last year. Thanks!

But I've viewed and downloaded pictures with this card and camera.
-
Okay, after leaving my camera out for the past month I finally went to check it. All around I found new rubs, scraps, tracks, etc. When I get home to download the pictures it doesn't work. It has on the card the following: ╪ ß|ex.if IF File 8,576kb it says it has 1.10 GB free of 1.89 GB Questions, what does this mean? Is there any pictures on it and if so how do I get them to download or view? Thanks!

Those tillers do a great job. Hopefully you have had some rain since Sunday. My little boy and I put in three plots this week and increased our yard into the new field we bought. Finished Wednesday evening and then we got a slow steady 1/2" of rain once we were done.

Can you not do the add a line for $9.99? I was told that it would work. As far as signal goes, that would be the only down fall.

When I bought my first piece of land I drove around looking at land, searched the PVA for the owners if I couldn't find out from the neighbors, and also checked the Deed and records at the courthouse. Once I found the land owner I would visit instead of calling if possible, it's more personable and they react better to you, to see if they would be interested in selling. It took several saying no before one said yes, or at least with a reasonable price. So don't get worried and keep looking, besides, you get to know people and they spread the word for you. You get the best deal before anyone else knows it is for sale. That's what happened to me. It took almost 5 years of talking back and forth and him visiting the land and me (he lives almost 16 hours away) before it went through. Since then, over the past 4 years I have added two other joining properties to the farm. I'm still looking to add more.

Best time to purchase an ATV?
WestKyTeacher replied to Turkeygirl's topic in Vehicles and Hunting Transportation
I know you are in NY, but to compare prices you should look on Abernathy's website from Union, TN. Some of the best prices I have ever found online. 2012 foreman is 6094 for red or green and 6394 in camo, but you can get a 2011 camo for 5994 -
I like the idea of getting a camera that sends the pictures to you cell phone and e-mail. Then if they steal it you still have pictures of them doing so.

Call me crazy but with the price of corn and soybeans I went out and bought 25 acres of hayfield. Then I found a farmer that would pay $125 acre to row crop it. So not only do I get my taxes paid but I also get free corn for the deer! Okay, truth is I didn't want anyone moving in on my hunting ground or building there so I bought it. However, it does do all that for me and I rent the house out for almost the loan payment. If I keep decent renters for 15 years then it is paid for in rent money!

I agree with Todd on the deep woods off. The last two times I've went to change cards on the cameras I sprayed my rubber boots and pants just before I left (5 minutes). Each time these guys were on the camera the very same day after I left. Notice the time, I changed it that day at 10:00 am.
