  1. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? Knock me off the property Id say. That 338 RUM in a handgun would be crazy. LOL Id try it but may not want it afterwards. LOL
  2. Re: Always remember............... Wow I expected more damge to the bore sighter and not even close to that on the bbl. Thats amazing. I agree he definately needs somethin' bigger, iffin he clears those obstructions 1st. LOL
  3. Re: Neck shots A neck shot is good if your actually going for the spine or VERY close to it. Believe it or not its not as simple as just hitting it in the neck and seeing him drop. High shoulder shots do the same thing. Both damage the spine and thats what drops them. Head shots are my least favorite but I took one a few years ago. Hit the deer broad side and he bolted for the woods. I thought I missed. I took another and caught him behind the right ear and it came out his mouth. Deer looked like he hit a clothes line. No damage to his head what-so-ever and we could not find my 2nd shot for a few minute until my brother-in-law grabbed and pulled on his right ear to flip him over. Then we noticed the hangin tounge looking a bit freyed too. Kinda sick. LOL I always go for a drop shot good or poor weather. If it crossed the property lines it can be a major pain trying to get your deer back in my area, Bunch of jerk land owners around my 75 acres...
  4. Re: The Can or The Lil\' Can? No luck on the Lil Can at all, but had a nice buck come running out of the woods, cold calling, looking for that hot doe with my Great Big Can last fall. Never tried the Original Can...
  5. Re: sharp or not? I do the "shave the hairs off your arm" test.
  6. Re: Deer Hunting Gun I see your user name has "retired" in it so I assume your not a young person. 1st time hunter, old or not, should start by looking around the .243, .25-06, .270, .308 calibers IMHO. I started on a 30-06 and was a bit scared of it for a long while until I grew bigger.. LOL I did not like recoil... I wish I had a .243 back then... JMO
  7. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? Hey it coulda been a 338 Ultra Mag. LOL Now thats some fun too... Wish I could get it in encore pistol bbl length.

    Can Call

Re: Can Call I used the Great Big Can for the 1st time last year during the rut and had a buck come running out of the woods looking for that hot doe. I have not had much luck with the Lil Can at all and have not tried the medium sized, or Original Can yet. You can bet my Great Big Can will be front and center coming this weekend.
  9. Re: Shooting Hours or Seeing Hours??? 1/2 before and 1/2 after in VT too. Also we have it listed in our free reg. book. However our free chart is of when sunset and sun rise are not the legal hours. Plus with the time change occuring during bow season it can get confusing as to when its legal or not. I go ahead and make a excell chart with all times pre-figured out and listed for each day during open season for each of the deer seasons and give each hunter on my property a laminated copy so there is no mistake when legal shooting hours start and finishes. Good thing to do when the game warden lives on the next door property and has to drive past my gate to get off the road. LOL I will also say that there have been many an evening when I could no longer see well enough to ID the deer (antler restrictions now) so I had gotten down and still had time left to hunt.
  10. Re: Muffs 2006 gun season Wow sounds like one heck of a trip. Our firearms season opens tommorow but I have to work. You can bet I will be quite grumpy all day. LOL Congrats to both young hunters too.
  11. Re: Hunting in the middle of the day Dont get me wrong. I am there 1/2 before 1st light and leave after legal runs out during the rut. I sometimes run home at noon to warm up and grab something hot to eat but I am back within the hour to hunt the rest of the day. I only live 1 mile from my hunting property. All other times I hunt mornings and evenings.
  12. Re: Checking 200yd accuracy Ditto, Great shooting with a ML at 200 IMHO. I keep all my shots at or under 100 yards. But then again I use a 15" Encore 209x50 ML handgun with 250g shockwaves and 100g Pyrodex pellets.. I do get 1 to 1.5 inch groups at 100 with it but still, anything much further then that and I start dropping to much.
  13. Re: cant keep it grouped!! Ohhh I did not know you reloaded. That may be your issue. Not exact reloads will do it... I mean if the gun groups super tight just not same place everytime out it has to be your loads not being exactly the same. Not that factory ammo will either but they are really not to far off lot ot lot. Not that I have seen anyways. (Federal and Remington)
  14. Re: POI question. Sounds good. Hope I helped with the info... (???)
  15. Re: Deer calls I suppose it all depends on how distressed the fawn sounds. If it sounds lost then yea senerio #1 makes sense. If it sounds like coyote meal, then #2 makes sense. I tend to stay away from any sort of distress calls and stick with estrous calling and young buck grunting. Even mature buck grunting can scare away bucks that are shooters if they had a bad experience.. JMO
  16. Re: POI question. Sorry about that. I just check the Winchester site and did not see a ballistics chart. I then went to the Remington site and they listed two shells at 100g in .243 Win. 1st said 0" (or zero) at 50 yards was 0.5" high at 100 yards; and the other said 0.1" high at 50 was 0.7" high at 100 yards. I doubt 1" low at 75 was good. Id re-sight in if I were you...
  17. Re: Hunting in the middle of the day Ive shot the majority of my bucks between 11am and 2 pm. Only 1 at first light and 3 at last light, the rest were mid day... This is hunting during the rut BTW...
  18. I just picked up a cheap Allen mono-pod at wally world for hunting out of a few tree stands this year using that encore handgun. Most shots I can use the tree, or railing, etc.. but some straight out or to the right shots I would be just hangin it out there. Its pretty freakin heavy too for a handgun... LOL I thought I could use a mono-pod from the platform to my wrist or forend to "help" steady my shot. Anyone else do this?
  19. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? [ QUOTE ] A .300 Win Mag, wrist-wrench definitely gets you off the porch and into The Gang!! [/ QUOTE ] Phew I was sweatin the initiation on this one. LOL If that did not get me "off the porch" I think I want to stay on it. LOL Oh and thanks for the tip on using "required" that just may work. LOL
  20. Re: POI question. Not sure. Go to Remington or Federal web sites and look up your exact bullet weight,/model and check ballistics. Seems awful low to me as well at 75. If anything it would be the same or higher I would think... 50 yards I can see 1" below but not 75... JMO
  21. Re: cant keep it grouped!! Hmm... dunno then.
  22. Re: Mosquito with a Cannon? Start shooting the .300 Win Mag belted rifle cartridge in handgun form and now your talking recoil. Thats my hunting animal this year. LOL (am I off the porch too?) BTW I thought that "NEED" and "WANT" mean the same thing when it comes to hunting stuff. (???) Thats what my wife told me... LOL
  23. Re: cant keep it grouped!! Sounds like something on your gun is loose. The scope seems to hold zero but maybe the mount, rings, etc have something not quite tight. That or your stock is loose too. Or both. I just went threw this last weekend. New gun and scope and was shooting 3 leaf cover groups then low, then 1 to 1.5 foot groups. (???) Found my forend screw was loose.
  24. Re: How many rounds do you take? I always kept the rifle stock elastic thingy full (6) and just loaded from there. I had a Remington BDL 300 Ultra Mag. This year I am using an Encore 300 Win Mag handgun so 1 in and mostly like 4 or 5 in my pocket kept together with a rubber band.
  25. Re: Running them off???? [ QUOTE ] Could be their getting their butts stomped a bit. I took off a couple inches from the end of my True Talker grunt tube to make it sound less like a mature buck...and it fits easier in my pocket [/ QUOTE ] I was thinking of doing this too. In my area mature bucks are 2.5 yo so anything sounding bigger then that will scare them away IMO. Luckily for me my co-worker has the saem call and plans "to make some noise" during are rifle season. He has the saem grunt tube. I plan to hunt escape routes away from him. LOL (jk)
