We usually do our online Colorado DOW big game tag draw selections this time in Feb so I put in for a bunch of stuff. Put in for first rifle (which is really a late like 3rd rifle) at 3Forks Ranch and three others on RFW draws just to accumulate points, but will probably have to do OTC bull when we dont draw for elk. Same old thing. Also put in for second rifle in 55 and 35 for mulies but will probably end up with leftover leftover in 28 like last year( but we got the place and the deer and elk all figgered out now so 28 aint a bad last of the last choice). One year I need to put in for 37/371 thats good for elk too. The draws are all after April 17 deadline I think. Lotta darn typing, almost as bad as doing income taxes. Guess next month I'll buy my OTC spring gobb and put in for archery elk tag of some sort. Good luck to all you other big game tag lotto players. Maybe gas wont be 4.15 a gallon this fall.

Postponing trip til June so dau and granddau can go along too. I'll have more time then and can drag camper trialer along and camp wherever Obama says. I'll have to wade thru the touristers but what the heck. At least I get to see more of AZ.

While taking a break from doing my income tax (outgo tax?) I poured over the new COlo big game booklet and sorta made a plan: Here's what I hope to do if I can get / draw the tags: Antelope Oct 3-9 in Saguache or Walsenburg Mulies Oct 17-25 in Gunnison or Wolcott Bull elk Nov 11-15 in Wolcott So we'll see how the plans work out or fall out. Heck if the boss gets that job in Glenwood Springs we'll be right in the middle of the best Colo has to offer. Either way I got to have just a lil L.U.C.K. ( and dont fall outta the truck ) .

Unit 55 in Taylor Park ainta gonna be no OTC bull elk tags in 2010 and after. Also the ranchers want unit 54, 55, 551 to be all draw. Heck we cant hardly get deer tags now for 55 if its draw for elk I'll be alla way back out to Rico hunting. http://www.gunnisontimes.com/index.php?content=C_news&newsid=5839 -

Plan a ride to see the Grand Canyon over spring break. Would like to see south rim of course, but also want to look over north rim and the Kaibab in case I get to hunt there in fall. What can you tell me about the Kaibab and where do I go to see it and scout around. One of the 5 days we are there will be spent scouting mulies etc. Thanks.

Pretty cool hams Jeff. COngrats on a fun hunt with Jake.

...all griping about poor Colo hunt luck aside, I did meet some great folks from here and from www.huntingresource.com on different hunt meets we had in last 7 yrs.

Yep, know the feeling. I worked 25 yrs back east to come to Colorado to work and live and HUNT. Been here 7 yrs and aint fired a shot in anger at a bull elk, tho I passed some up. Mulies and antelope frustrate me due to draw sytstem, short seasons, and inability to draw tags closer than 300 miles from home here in sou CO. Colo is definitiely OVER$OLD. Knees wore out from walking trains, so am a cripple waiting for the next fall to happen. Hands are bad from working on rr cars so I cant reload any more. Am gonna give that stuff to a friend, when I find one. The benchrest is more and more appealing every day. 2009 I'll just buy a case of ammo ev month, lots easier. Wife is just as frustrated at lack of hunt luck as I am. We are DIY people and dont use guides( most Ive met thru work were drinks and dopers). We work hard, $pend hard, sweat hard, hike hard( when I can ), hunt hard, and shoot a lot of paper in off season. My northcentral PA home or wifes central GA home is looking better and better the older I get. Long seasons, plenty game, and no freakinnn draws. Yep, I know the feeling.

Great pics Kathleen. I hope you don't mind we culled a few to add to the ones we took. Ill try to get a link posted to them here later today. Was great meeting and sharing camp with you. I hope you'll consider returning. Good luck on the sheep hunts. -
First I want to say it was great seeing my friend SteveB again and meeting Kathleen and Jim. They kept me well fed in the eves that I hobbled to their their table. (Steve I'll send ya meal donation to do with as you wish). We all shared a bunch of good stories and talk about elk, deer, rifles, boots, AK, ghosts, CO, ufo's, and Freemasons( I couldnt tell em much about that ). Very astute and well read conversations we had in the eves. We had a great camp but just couldnt get on the elk. Well I couldnt even get on the road let alone get on the elk. Steve was kind enough to let me go spotting with him a few times, and Jim and Kathleen were on the next mtn mostly. Some time we could see them thru the spotter. The rest of Dawn and I's story is... we went to Central City and hunted unit 38 for mulies and elk on Thurs and Fri the 6th and 7th. Thurs was first day that I did any walking much since the 30th when I fell. It was brutal that day... sunny 34deg with 40mph winds. Wind chill hadda be zero or something. The wind never let up all day and we were out in it all day sneakin hikin and hidin looking for elk and mulies. We hunted up and down, thick and thin, field edges and deep black timber. No luck. Fri morn was cold but more like hunting weather as it was overcast. We hutned up one road while another couple hutned up this parallel road up this valley. We thought they might spook something over to us. I'm sure they thought the same. We walked this great elk ridge that had signs of a bull. It was very odd the more we walked this ridge I kept telling Dawn theres a lone bull here living. Around noon we met the couple again and they told us on the way up the road after 6am they saw one bull elk in the aspens and 13 mulies, three bucks and ten does. Of course they had cow tags. Soooo, had we gotten in there ten mins earlier and went up the right valley insted of the left valley we would almost surely had filled all our tags within a 200 yard stretch of trail. Such is the luck of the luckless...
