  1. Re: Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in caliber 7mm-08 Nice rifle. I have a 280 mountain rifle. This thing is accurate with alot of different ammo. I find the best results with my reloads and 140 grain nozler balistic tip bullets. I also have shot the Federal premium with the same bullets and they are good also. Good luck. You will have no problem bringing a deer down with any of this or the above mentioned ammo if you do your part.
  2. I started out to see what all the rave about Lab Lab was. I decided to test it against sugarbeets because I have been wanting to try it out also. Knowing sugar beets grow better in the cool weather I thought I would give it a try on my test plot. I planted these plots 30 yards from one another. They have about the same amount of daylight and soil type. After planting we went 2 1/2 months with no rain none. The Lab Lab started coming up anyway and deer started hitting it a little. The sugarbeets came up also but not enough to do anything. After we got a few rains the Lab Lab took off and the Sugar beets came up. When I went back there last week the deer were tearing up the sugarbeets and only hitting the Lab Lab about 1/4 as much. I really expected the opposite. The sugar beets dont look as good because the deer are hitting it so hard. Looks like a fall planting of sugar beets are in order. I got mine from bucklunch.com they sent me some free to test with. Nice bunch of people. I have 15 pics at various times of these plots on my webshots page below under 2006 test plot.
  3. Re: What does everyone plant... I will be planting Biologic green patch plus unless Pennington comes back out with the Mississippi Complete mix again this year. I will also plant some plots with sugarbeets. I have some planted now and the deer are eating it up. It is suppose to be best in cool weather. One plot I will plant only clover to see if I can keep it year around and not have to replant to save some bucks.
  4. Re: Deer CoCain It may take some time. I have hunted several different locations. Some they will hit it the first week and other times up to a year. The time were I had fast results were close to the Mississippi River. This may have something to do with the sandy soil close to the river. Also I think their diet can also effect how much sodium they need. I think soil type has alot to do with it. You can also put it out in a wrong spot but the deer will find it anywhere and start using it. One of our biggest best spot was a spot where my friend was hauling a 50 lb bag over his shoulder and slipped and dropped it. This became a really hot spot so we kept it up.
  5. Re: Using a climbing Tree Stand as.. Yea, when i had that pain in the butt tree lounge stand. It was comfortable but was heavy and made to much noise climbing. I finally got some good stands.
  6. Re: Swamp trees? Water Oak/chestnut oak (white oak family) works great down here in the swamp. They have some huge acorns. I had one fall from the tree and hit my scope and knock it off. I missed a 4 pt with my blackpowder gun because of that acorn. This is a true story.
  7. Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL DO IN THE OFF SEASON?? The first thing is to work on the honey do list that is pretty long right now. After that scout, shoot, plant plots for the summer. Put out minerals for deer. Make another deer camera. Do my maintenance on all my deer stands and put them away. Check out the rest of the ones in the woods and repair if needed. Ride my fourwheeler and fish some. Do some yote hunting. Oh turkeys thats not far away.
  8. Re: plots Im from Ponchatoula and I have you coverd on this one. For the summer plant American joint vetch mixed with alyce clover. Use 0-20-20 or something simular. For the winter use a blend from Pennington seed called Mississippi Complete. This is a blend of two clovers, wheat and oats. Use 13-13--13 for this. lime in the spring and fall. I will be planting my summer plots at the end of april. Good luck and let me know if you need anything else. You wont find anything better for us down here.
  9. Re: planting this spring Im not sure where you are but if you name inplies PA then you have plenty of deer. I dont know if 2 acres of soybeans is enough to keep the deer from eating it to the dirt. I would try to spray with Roundup and then plant something that will take heavy browsing. I use American joint vetch but I dont know how it would work up there. Lab Lab is another one that will take heavy browsing. I dont know what it would do up there either but I will try lab lab in a small plot this year. You may want to look at another one I am going to try this year. It is sugar beets. I have been looking at a site called bucklunch.com and will try it in a small plot also. Whatever you get try something that will come back after browsing. Soybeans are one of the best plants for the price but you have to have a good size plot. Good luck.
  10. Re: Mineral Licks You can buy 1- 50 lb bag of di-calcium phosphate 1- 50lb bag of rock salt, 2-50 lbs bags of trace mineral salt. Mix this to make your own. I use a coffee can and make smaller batches. I can di-calcium, 1 can of rock salt and two cans of trace mineral. I still am getting pictures over my mineral sites now. I was getting over a hundred a week and I am down to around 20 to 30 a week. The sooner the better on getting it out so they can find it. I will freshen mine up the first of March. After that I freshen them up during the summer every month and a half. I stop in October. Good luck.
  11. Re: white oaks again I got my information from a company that sell them so they may be trying to make it better than it really is. Or maybe everything has to be perfect. 7 years is still a short time.
  12. Re: Opinions I would spray like dogdoc says and then let the clover seed out. I would then till it up and plant soybeans for the summer. 8 acres would be big enough that I think the soybeans would have a chance to make it. I always let my crimson clover seed out and then plant my summer plots over it. The clover will come back during the fall as the summer plots die out with a little 13-13-13 and lime. I almost forgot. Welcome to the forum.
  13. Re: Just Wondering Do You Guys Have..... Mine are still out. I will take them out after the season for about 2 months and them get them back out when I can see something on the deers head. I have two more weekends to go. One with rifle and then black powder. I have not been getting very many pictures lately. We had a bad year with the hurricanes and trying to get everything back to normal. The timber people came in during the first 4 weeks of the season to cut all the trees that fell from the hurricanes. Sence this time I have not been getting many pictures. I did kill a good 8 point last sunday and hope the deer are coming back now for the last two weeks.
  14. Re: QDM First off welcome to the forum. QDM takes time and it is hard to get going with small acreage. You just have to keep plugging away and trying to do what you can by talking to your people joining your land. Some may never do it but I would get some pictures and QDM magazines after you read them and pass them along to these people. Someday they may see the light. As far as planting you can see plenty of insight in the other post in this forum.
  15. Re: equipment reccomendations I bought a tiller that goes on my 3 point hitch. I am not sure how well it will work in rocky soil. It works great down here with just one pass. they are kind of explensive if you cant find a used one.
  16. Re: white oaks again I planted some from acorns (Chestnut and white oak) and they are about 8 years old and 15 to 20 ft tall. No acorns yet. I have heard that the sawtooth oaks start to produce in 3 to 5 years. You can get some fairly cheap in bulk. Check with your local co-op and they may be able to steer you in the right direction.
  17. Re: Brassicas Being Hammered My brassica plots look great. No deer are eating them yet.
  18. Re: Top ten food plots for North and South Kinda long Kinda long, Thanks for the information.
  19. Re: quick survey on design of mine someone made one of these years ago and tried to market it but it did not fly. Maybe it was before its time. Times change and if it is easily enough to move around and quiet then it may sell now. Most people that buy ladder stands put them up in the fall and leave this out for the season.
  20. Re: so what do you have planned? I will be planting American Joint Vetch mixed with Alyce clover on most of my plots. I will plant two smaller plots with Lab Lab and some corn to see what this will do. I will be freshining up my mineral sites real soon so they will be ready when they need it.
  21. Re: Question Like mdqc says you need to keep some of this. If you just want to hunt birds then this would be ok but if you want to keep deer on the place you need to leave it until the undergrowth starts to die out. Then you need to just thin it out to get some sun to the ground and get all that thick stuff back.
  22. Re: What parts for game cams Jesse's and hagshouse has about the best info that I have found. And if I can make them anyone can.
  23. Re: Deer Feeder I put the feeder out and put it on the shortest time setting. The deer will find it. If there looks to be to much on the ground I will pull the wire from the battery for a day or two. After they start hitting it you will have to increase the time. In the summer you dont want to use corn. use corn only to get them started then go to soybeans if you can. The corn does not have enough protein to enable the racks to reach there full potential. I have 8 moultrie tripod feeders that I bought this year and the deer are hitting them all. They are the proline series i bought from moultriefeeders.com and only cost 69 or 89 dollars for the 15 gallon and 30 gallon tripods feeders. You can add 15 dollars and get the upgrade to feed up to 7 times a day. Good luck.
  24. Re: salt licks Salt licks are mainly used in the summer. But if the weather warms up in the winter they may use it. I was getting about 120 pics per week during the summer and now I get about 30. They still are coming to it but not very much.
  25. Re: HOW MUCH DO YOU HAVE? one spot is 100 acres. I have 2.5 in plots. The rest is planted pines. the other is 400 acres. I have about 4 acres in plots. This one is about to change because the loggers came in and cut out all the tree that the hurricane blow down so I will be making more plots there.
