For this post, I'm only going to be talking about Montgomery County. This county has a proven deer take much less than most counties in the southern tier. And some ask why and I'll tell you, we don't have the deer numbers that the rest of the southern tier has. But the DEC doesnt' have the balls to make a change and realize out of all the 50 or so counties in NY, that their not all going through the same problems. How can you try to keep a tab on a deer herd when it changes from every 30 miles or so. Sure some parts of the state are over-run with deer while some are plain and simply just struggling. Why not implement some more specific rules and regs. from one county to another?? If I was in charge of this county, I'd allow the harvest of one doe and after completion of the doe, one buck tag for bow season. Then for gun season, I'd offer one buck tag with a 6 point or better rule and that's it for a few years until the population recovers. It's gotten very bad and I don't see any changes to help the situation. The state just keeps throwing out deer permits to anyone and everyone. Sorry just really pissed off and can't wait to make a difference hopefully once I'm done with my edu.

Re: Filled my doe permit nah u can see em stickin out without binocs in a nice green field like they were in. I've tried many times trying to look at deer in this same field with binocs and having no luck telling if they were bucks or does. Just too far away. I figured one of the two had to be a doe so I made my move. I won't lie, it wasnt very difficult given the circumstances. Just the way of the land and the wind made it possible. There was a high fence row that allowed only my shoulders up to see what was on the other side. Hardest part was trying go decide if i should shoot offhand without a rest or try to crawl underneath a old barbwire fence that was missing the bottom row. Worked out perfect and couldn't be happier.

Was a very windy night and saw 2 deer eating in a field a 1000 or so yards a way. Since noone's been seeing any deer to speak of since opening day and that wasn't very much, decided to do a spot and stalk using the wind to allow me to walk up to 100 yards of the deer from the field edge. Didn't bring the rangefinder so I figured on a 120 yard shot maybe a bit more on the bigger of the two. So to be safe, put the crosshairs just under her back and squeezed the encore off. Saw a white tummy when the smoke cleared. Talk about instant. This is my 2nd deer for the year with the encore, Win Sabots combo. I'm loving life right now...

Re: bolt polishing I'm asking because I own a Win. Model 70 and its not smooth at all. Very bumpy feeling and my freind has a remington and it's nothing like mine. His is very easy and smooth feeling when operating the bolt.

Re: bolt polishing make it operate smoother

Re: 777 yea the reason I asked is because I was shooting at the range and tried 3 pellets and was getting a nice group. Then I came home and talked to my dad and he said he didn't think you could shoot that 3 because it was too much powder. He didn't know they were already the equivilent to pyrodex and I wasn't positive it was. It groups about 6 inches high with the 3rd pellet.

Re: winchester platinum tip came thru Yea these bullets were on sale at every walmart around for 5 bucks for a pack of 30. Going to keep my eye out for them again this year.
-
hey yall just wanted to say that those winchester platinum tips shot nice out of my encore yesterday afternoon. Shot a nice 8 point thats on its way to the taxidermist shop from 159 yards. Put the crosshairs on its back and found 3 holes thru the both lungs and a hole thru the liver. Do they usually fragment like this. He ended up wobbling about 20 yards before laying down for good. I had a steady stick to get a nice rest out of my treestand with. It's my first kill with my muzzleloader since buying it earlier this year.
-
is there anyway to smooth out the bolt or polish it? whats your method?
-
can i safetly shoot 3 of the 777 50 grain pellets out of my encore or is that too much? Is it really 150 grains of the equivlent or is it more than 150 grains compared to pyrodex??? anyone??
-
anyone shoot these platinum tip bullets? they shot the best out of a variety of bullets from my encore. also have you shot any deer with them?? anyone know the bullet drop from 100 yards dead on with two 777 50 gr pellets might be? my local range is only 100 yds long.

Re: 50.00 fine-just curious I've heard of a guy receiving this ticket along with a few others and he deserved it. I have also been asked to see a pen one day coming out of the woods by a encon officier. I've always carried 2 pens in my pocket ever since. Didn't know the price of a ticket before though.

Re: estous drag I always start it about 100 yards from the truck and apply it till its damp on both sides. Tie it with fishing line to a short stick and let it drag on the right side of where im walking. I usually reapply every 50 yds or so. Then walk it past my treestand and bury the stick where my hand has touched into the ground and its usually up 3 ft or so. Just wonderin what you guys did
-
when you guys lay a scent trail say with a spray bottle of a dropper. How many sprays do you usually spray. Do you think there is a possiblity of overdoing it?? Or underdoing it?

Re: shooting threw a blind chance whats the chance in it. I mean you shoot thru it into a target. Its either gonna open and you'll miss your mark or its gonna be dead nuts. I've tried shooting with the blades already open on a mechanical and they are off a good 6 inches. If it works in practise then it should work in the woods
-
I shoot spitfires and want to shoot them thru a shoot thru window in my blind. I read that you can put rubber bands around the blades so they wont open when they pass thru the window. How many rubber bands are you using?? or do you think it would need.

dad hit a nice buck tonight, haven't found it yet. Hit it about a half hour before dark from 20 yards on the ground. said he watched the arrow hangin out of his front shoulder before he went down into a ravine. Followed the blood trail 50 yards or so straight down just about and another 100 yards across the bottom. He then decided to come back up out of the ravine about 50 yards pretty slick. He could of easily just crossed a nice size creek and run onto i island in the middle of the creek that is a good acre or more or thick vegetation that noone in the world ever touches. I dont understand why he didnt go for water like they say and climbed the ravine instead. Im now thinking he may of hit above the lungs. We'll know more tomorrow. There wasnt too much blood to follow except in spots. He was hit with a 72lb mathews and a 100 grain spitfire. Can't believe it didnt blow right threw him. I've had the same shot many times and get a pass thru taking out the opposite shoulder.

Re: The rut gearing up i've been seeing deer everytime i've gone out, usually every night. Only 2 bucks though. the one was ripping 2 small saplings up and the other was chasing a doe around in circles for 2 hours this last weekend. there not responding to the true talker or the can yet. Just kinda pick there head up and look over. Tried the rattle bag and nothing. good luck tonite
-
if u rattled only once in the morning would it be when it was getting light or more towards mid day???
-
Re: Guess it happens to everyone ? They'll be back, if not others will be. Keep hunting it. You'll end up with one.
-
never have i heard anyone attempt to try rattling in ny. Just doesnt seem to be enough bucks in central ny. I would say out of every 10 deer in the stand i see one buck. So you know that bucks getting popped. Sometimes we go days without seeing deer our stands. does anyone in ny rattle?

Re: The NY season so far well me and my buddy saw zip tonight. Ended up being really nice out. Started around 4 and it was drizzling. About a hr later the rain held off and the wind was dead. Seemed like the perfect night. But we noticed all the deer were moving around noon today. Kinda expected nothing tonight.

Re: The NY season so far I've been seeing quite a few deer but they've been all does up north so far. Saw one really nice 6 point behind a guys yard. He was with 5 other doe. Looks like they're feeding them again this year. Can't decide if I want to stay down south tonight or head up north with the muzzleloader. Would like to get one before rifle season opens up there. Then I'll be spending most of the season back in the southern tier. Been seeing a lot of doe in the fields in the south while visiting freinds. There should be some big boys around like every year. good luck

Re: Ny hunters on opening day Went out tonite around 4. Gusty winds and saw 3 doe feeding. Rain held off. Tomorrow I may try up north with the muzzleloader. Let the encore speak!
