  1. Re: Scope shopping.... Check out a Sightron SII 3x9x42. Can't be happier with the one I have. Crystal clear, extremely bright, and a great warranty should you ever need it. The price is right too. Most online and catalog places such as Midway USA, Natchez, and a few others are selling them for $199.99. Check them out.
  2. Re: Shotgun for Deer, which one ? Can't go wrong with the Remington.
  3. Re: Scope choice Sightron SII 3x9x42. Outstanding scope for $200.Super clear and bright, with great eye relief and a lifetime replacement warranty. I put one on my Encore 308win bbl a few weeks ago. I took it to the range and a couple of guys there checked out my setup. They said they never heard of Sightron Scopes, but after a look through it they were impressed. I like it so much I'm going to replace the Bushnell I have ontop of my Encore 209x50 bbl before next deer season. I Bought mine at Midway USA. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=868254
  4. Re: Got my Encore stock too pointer Glad to hear you got the stock I figured you would like it. As far as the Simms recoil pad I have the same condition, its a little long for the stock, but not a problem at all. Enjoy it.
  5. Re: help narrow it down I couldn't resist too pointer I'm glad to hear you went ahead and ordered your laminated stock set. I'm sure your really going to like it. The one and only thing I really and truly hated about my Encore was that cheap synthetic stock it came with.
  6. Re: help narrow it down I have an Encore 209x50 too. There are things I hate about it too. I hate that its so easy to clean. I hate the way it fits me like a glove. I hate the superb accuracy I can get out of it. I hate not having to use little plastic discs to hold my primer in place to load it. The #1 thing I really hate about it is sitting here trying to figure out which barrel I want to get next for it. Man I hate that gun.
  7. Re: Recoil pads for the Boyd\'s laminated stocks too pointer, I put a Simms prefit pad on my Boyd stock I ordered the #10030 for the wood stock. Its not a perfect fit but its not too bad. I lined it up even at the top it fit perfect there. The stock was about a 1/32" wider than the pad and the pad itself was about 1/4" longer that the stock. The fact that the pad is longer than the stock really didn't bother me and thats how I left it. On the other hand the 1/32" difference between the pad and stock bugged the **** out of me. I remedied this by making a spacer out of a black plastic powder bottle. I cut a piece then screwed it to the original pad that came on the Boyds stock. I shaped it to the same dimensions of the pad with a palm sander. When it was done I aligned it with the stock then centered the Simms pad on it then tightened it down. It turned out to be a thing of beauty. A friend of mine put the synthetic prefit on his synthetic stock and that fit wasn't perfect either maybe a little worse than mine. I can't vouch for the recoil reduction on the muzzleloader but I had a limbsaver pad put on my Browning Citori Skeet Gun two weeks ago. I like it a lot, makes the 12ga feel like I'm shooting a 28ga. My Browning BT-99 trap gun is going to get fitted for one in the next couple weeks. I was impressed.
  8. Re: What to buy? [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] The Savage is a great gun just kinda pricey. If it will be seldom used, I would go Omega. I believe you can get any Omega you want, plus a good scope maybe cheaper than the Savage. [/ QUOTE ] Not the case at all-- a SS / LAM Omega is Cabela's at Thompson Center Omega Rifle - Stainless, Laminate Item: UE-214671 Price: $489.99 Actually more pesos for the fluted barrel models. [/ QUOTE ] $489.99 for an Omega S/S laminated thats insane. Thats even a crazier price than our local Gander Mtn. I was at one of our local gunshops not noted for great prices had the same gun for $399.99. There are a couple online sites they can be had for less than $395.+ shipping. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/de...%4F%4D%45%47%41 https://www.dnrsports.net/miva/merchant....uzzleloaderstho
  9. Re: MUZZLELOADER STOCKS ?? I put a Boyds pepper laminated set on my Encore last year. In my opinion the synthetic stocks T/C uses really takes away from the overall quality of their guns. My only gripe with the gun. The laminated stock is defintely more eye appealing, and the added weight seems to soak up more recoil, and balances the gun better. Check out E.A.Browns website they have a special going on both the stock and forend on sale for $99.00 http://www.eabco.com/encorestocks.html Good luck
  10. Re: Question on the TC Omega w/ 209 ignition Hoyt, I think the choice of an Omega is a good one. I personally have an Encore which I bought a while before the Omegas came out. My two brothers both have Omegas. Stainless with the pepper laminated stocks. I know stock choice is personal preference. I think T/C missed the boat on their synthetic stocks. I had one on Encore that I replaced with a laminated stock. The synthetic stocks are hollow. They are noisy, brush it up against a buckle or anything solid it makes quite a bit of noise. IMO I think the gun is better balanced with the laminated stock and the little extra weight your adding helps soak up a little recoil. If you have a chance to look at one with the laminated stock check it out. I don't know how you feel about mailorder sales but heres a site to checkout. I've purchased a few items from them there service is good. https://www.dnrsports.net/miva/merchant....uzzleloaderstho Good Luck on whatever you decide.
  11. Re: Sightron scopes [ QUOTE ] Well, I gotta tell ya, if Sightron has the best eye relief, I don't wanna be your face. My dad has a Sightron on his ml, and 90% of the time when I shoot it, i get a nice smack in the forehead by that scope. It use to be on his 12 gauge, but I made him take it off after it smacked my eye 5 out of the 5 shots I took. I don't know which one your looking at, ours is an SI series 3-9x40. Just a little food for thought. If you don't need much magnification, look at the simmons prodiamond shotgun scopes. They have a LONG eye relief, and are a very great scope, for little cost. [/ QUOTE ] lil hunter, Don't take this wrong. I'm not setting out to question your shooting abilities. You stated that you 90% of the time shot your dads guns you got smacked in the forehead, with both the muzzleloader and the shotgun. Does your dad get smacked in the forehead when he shoots his guns? If not it sounds to me a like the guns are set up to fit your dad. they may be slightly off for you. We had a similar situation here a couple years ago. My dad has a Remington 1100 with A Redfield scope on it. He used to smack himself with that thing all the time. I would shoot it and not have a problem. It was just a matter of fit. I moved the scope up to optimize the whopping 3" eye relief for him and he hasn't had a problem since. With the specs on the Sightron, if its set up for optimum eye relief for the shooter there shouldn't be any problems. If you can't get it to work give Sightron a call tell them your situation you may get a new scope out of it. As far as the Simmons Pro-Diamond goes I'm looking to up the power from 1.75x4 to a 2x7 or 3x9 as the magnification goes up the eyerelief come down on that "Gem".
  12. I'm looking for a new a scope for my Encore. I want something with plenty of eyerelief. Seem like the two scopes with the longest are Leupold and Sightron. I'm for a 2x7 or 3x9. Does anyone have experience with Sightron scopes? Good or bad please let me know. I think Santa (aka Me) is going to buy me a late Xmas present once he decides what he wants. Happy Holidays Thanks
  13. Re: T/C Omega loads [ QUOTE ] Hornady and Thompson seem to have collaborated very well on the Hornady SST also named the Thompson Shockwave. There are quite a few bullets that work great in the Thompson...actually almost every brand I tried worked good. The Hornady, however, seems to be made for the Omega, IMO. Try it and see what you think. [/ QUOTE ] I'm a little puzzled by the collaboration myself. Why would T/C market a product thats such a pain in the A$$ to use in their guns. I bought a box Shockwaves and a box of SST's to try out this year. I have an Encore and both of these bullets are no doubt the hardest things I've ever tried to stick in any hole. I don't think I'm alone on this one either. I've read many forums and the loading problems associated with these sabots/bullets. My brother shoots an Omega. Trying to load Shockwaves he did a number on his ramrod. My Encore If I can get them to start the first couple inches with the short starter they will go down but its a challenge. Once down, I will admit they shoot pretty good. Upon reading in these forums people recommend using Harvester sabots with the SST/Shockwave bullets. I bought a box and they are right they do load easier as the petal of the sabot are thinner. I haven't had them out for accuracy yet. Just seems like a bad situation when you buy a bullet and sabot in a package then have to s**t can the sabots and buy replacements to make them loadable in your gun. I don't know how T/C missed the boat on this one. Until they get right I'll stick with the Precision Rifle QT40's .
  14. Re: Calling all NY ML hunters... What\'s your position? HEY! I got an idea. If you want to lower the doe count why don't you make bow season doe only OOOO did I just type that?? Ranger. Did you really type that? I'm sure that will fray a few bowstrings.
  15. Re: Boyd stock for the Encore too pionter The stocks bought directly from Boyd are unfinished. The stocksets from E.A Brown are fully fitted and finished for $99
  16. Re: American Pioneer Powder It's Clean Shot reintroduced with a new name. I think it works fine. The ffg is kind of coarse and gets a bad rap for inconsistancy. I haven't had any issues with that yet. Its noncorrosive, easy clean up, and no need to swab the bore between shots. From what I can see it don't develop the crud ring thats common with 777. Some say its not as powerful as 777, no big deal up your charge a bit if thats what it takes to get the results your looking for. I shot Cleanshot from the day I bought my Encore until they were drove out of business over the pellet patent infringement law suit. After that I bought 777. Don't get me wrong 777 shot well. but the crud ring and swabbing between shots was a turn off for me. This year I figured I'd try American Pioneer. I liked it and I'm going to stick with it. My brother shoots ffg too. He tried the sticks he said they were inconsistant. Personally I prefer powder to pellets or sticks. It gives you more flexability when trying to work up an accurate load. My pet load with APP is a Precision 235gr QT40 over a charge of 120grs of APP and a Win 209 primer. This combination gets me a 1/2" ctc group at 50 yrds.
  17. Re: trouble with the shockwaves? I too have trouble loading Shockwave/SST sabots in my Encore. Yesterday I bought a pack of Harvester sabots. The petals are thinner than the petals on the sabots packaged with the bullets. I tried loading my gun on a clean barrel with the SST bullet and the Harvester sabot. It went down with resistance but nowhere near as hard as with the packaged sabots. I haven't tried them on the range for accuracy yet, but I figured I'd give the SST's another chance with the new sabots. I also have Nosler sabots coming in next week these are suppose to load easier that the Harvesters. After Xmas I'll get to the range and see which sabot works best as far as accuracy goes. Its not very cost effective but I hear good things about the bullets performance on game. We will see.
  18. Re: Reweighing your pellets..... Why would I want to pay extra to have somebody else misweigh my powder charges, when I can save money use powder and misweigh it myself. All kidding aside I have to agree with Zoobear. Loose powder lets you tailor you loads to get the best from your gun. In the woods give me a T/C quickshot or equivelent with the premeasured powder charge and a bullet stuck in the other end. Doesn't get much simpler than that.
  19. Re: Boyd stock for the Encore Too Pointer. I went into the website again and found they are selling the set buttstock and forend for $99. The laminated set adds a little weight to the gun but at the same time the gun seems to be better balanced and recoil seems to be reduced a little. I also like the larger pistol grip on the Boyd stock http://www.eabco.com/encorestocks.html
  20. Re: Boyd stock for the Encore I bought a set of pepper laminated from E. A. Brown Co. last year. They were totally finished and the fit was excellent. Be sure to save the metal tab and screw that holds the ramrod tight from you old forend, it must be used in the laminated forend. Buttstock $79 Forend $39 http://www.eabco.com/tclam.html
  21. Re: T/C Encore 50 cal fouling problem Try American Pioneer Powder. Works fine for me. I know a lot of people here don't like it but, I wasn't happy with the hassles associated with 777 either. With APP no crud ring, no swabbing between shots and easy cleanup.
  22. Re: Calling all NY ML hunters... What\'s your position? I like the idea. My two brothers are bowhunters. When I pulled out the proposals for next year and tossed them on the table at camp, you should have heard the whining. The three of us hunt the regular season with our muzzleloaders. I'll bet you next Oct 15 the three of us will be heading into the woods with our T/C's and all the whining will cease.
  23. I see Winchester has a primer listed as a WML209 "Ideal for muzzleloaders". It doesn't say anywhere about being reduced charged or improved for muzzleloaders just the designation above. Sounds like the same old Win 209 shotgun primer in a new package. Seems to me to be marketing ploy by Winchester to get you to pay $4.00 for a $2.00 box of primer. If I'm wrong let me know. But it sure sounds like marketing Bull S**t to me.
  24. Re: First try with the new Encore today Try American Pioneer Powder. Had the problem with the 777 crud ring last year. Went to APP works nice I've shot up to 15 times without swabbing and no real effect on accuracy. The load I'm shooting right now is a Precision 235gr. QT40 sabot over 120grs. of APP. Shoots pretty good 1/2 " groups @ 50 yrds off a sandbag rest. Haven't shot it at 100yrd, most of my shots are within 75 yrds. I tried the 250 gr. Shockwaves same problems a real pain in the a$$ to get started but once in an inch or two they go down pretty easy. I don't like hassles. APP takes care of the crud ring problem. The QT40's eliminate the the loading problems. Good Luck
