That is the mount he wants. Now if we can just find a form big enough.
-
A friend of mine wants a pedastal mount for his IL deer but we haven't found a company that makes one large enough for his measurements. I know the smaller forms can be altered by being split and filled but.......... Is there a company that makes bigger forms for pedastal mounts? We've been through McKenzie's book and a couple of others. We were told about two companies but I can't find them. One was something like a "Monarch" and the other was "The Intimidator" I think. Any help would appreciated.

Not to get your hopes up but that deer may very well gross close to 200". I've scored 170" deer for the BTR books and put my hands on a 180" 10pt. That deer is much better than those. He may not make B&C but who cares. That is a world class buck anywhere.

Barbour is your best bet for an older buck in that area of the state. Go to www.outdooralabama.com and read up on the regs. They do have I think a "3pt on one side rule" down there on that WMA. You should hit the rut I would imagine at that time.

Take it from someone who raises dogs, as someone said, go home now and be with your grandpa and the dog. The dog is in pain I'm sure and there is only one thing to do for him. If the dog is that bad off, you owe it to him to do the right thing. Trust me, I understand that is absolutely SUCKS but you have to do what is right. If there is anyway, get home and help your grandpa through it. In the long run, you'll be glad you did.

No, never hunted them. I used to hunt near Gordo in Pickens CO but that is as close as I got. Friend of mine lives a few miles from Oakmulgee. Go to ALdeer.com and ask about them on the forums there.

I'm not sure if these are in Greene Co but........ (Well, I know one isn't) Oakmulgee in Moundville is a good one Demopolis is close to Greene Co and would probably be another one.

I've been invited by a friend to travel over there and hunt for a few days. Just figured I would see if anyone would tell me what to expect. He wants some meat so I told him I would try to help him get a couple of does in the freezer. I think he said his county reported over 7,000 kills last year so I assume there are plenty of deer there.

Is it Army Corps land? If so, how accessible is it? I work for the Corps so I may can call some folks out your way but chances are they'll have no clue. lol

I need some help if possible. Myself and a couple of friends are looking for some places to rabbit hunt out your way. I guess a little get away hunt for 3-5 guys. I hunt in Nebraska every year for turkeys but really don't want to drive to Keya Paha county to rabbit hunt. Any help on private or public land would be nice in these states. Our dogs are deer broke and any young dogs wear shock collars just in case. Anyone willing to help would be surely invited to join us and we'll give you all the rabbits you want out of our harvest, gutten, clean and quartered. lol Guaranteed to leave any place better than we found it. Two of us run clubs down here so we have no patience for those that disrespect other's property.

Depends. Most states don't pay to well at first. IN the south, somewhere in the high 20's to low 30k's. My best friend is a fisheries biologist. He got his Fisheries Science degree and Masters at Mississippi State. He does it because it loves his work. He was the smartest person in our class. 4.1GPA, 31 on his ACT and really high on his SAT. He chose a lower paying field but he is happy. That should be the #1 thing, will it make you happy. If it does, go for it. Heck, he did and he could have been anything.

Here is what I was told by a well known deer manager. He had managed properties all over the country for one of the biggest consultants. I think I trust what he says. LOL "The best time to run a photo census is as late in the summer as possible (so antler development is near complete), 2) yet before any acorns begin to fall (acorns outdraw any other food source--deer will stop coming to the camera bait once acorns begin to fall). For me, I like anywhere from the first of August through mid-September. Antlers are almost fully developed by early August and acorns begin to fall in mid-September. Just remember that any food-source bait must be completely removed at least 10 days before the start of bow season. Once I determine the camera locations, I pre-bait the location (keep an active pile of corn) for at least 10 days before I start the census (to get deer accustomed to using the site), then I place the cameras and run the census for at least 10 days. In 10 days, you will get pictures of the vast majority of deer using the area (90+%). Minimum camera/bait locations are 4 per square mile, or one per 160 acres (quarter square mile). I literally draw a one square mile square on a map, divide it into four equal quarters, and then pin-point a camera/bait site near the center of each quarter-square. "

There is a way to get a pretty accurate count on your deer population and you ratios I know within a small error each way what our ratio is and this in the deep south. I also know what our pre-hunt census was. IT was within a small error either way. All you need is cameras and bait and the formulas. Also, killing a few does to justify "balancing" out your yearling buck is not the way to look at it. You CANNOT balance that out, no matter how many does you shoot. In order to get any sort of "balance", you must allow those bucks to reach maturity or at least 2.5y/o.

Take a trip down Turkey Memory Lane... (pics)
tennswamper replied to Randy's topic in Turkey Hunting
Re: Take a trip down Turkey Memory Lane... (pics) This was a hunt in '04. The other fellow was my turkey hunting teacher. He taught me everything about turkey hunting. A true Bama warrior in the turkey woods. Sadly, he passed away in January of '05. This was one of our last hunts together. -
Re: Season is going good!! Correction:::::: I've been in the woods 7 days now. LOL

Well, it was a plan that worked. Rarely does that happen. LOL I had to work until 8am this morning and instead of taking off, I decided to do the midday thing. I got to our place around 9:20 this morning. I had to stop in Collinwood, TN and buy my license. (lol) I saw some birds in our bottom and tried to pull the ambush but they were gone when I stuck my head out of the creek. Anyway…. I went to a place nobody hunted this morning that always has birds. About 10:45, I got to the first plot in the mature pines and got a shock gobble across a hollow near another plot. I set up but nothing. Wind was awful. After 20 minutes or so, I heard him gobble and heard some hens with him. GRRRRRR Then, a few minutes later, he gobbled again up higher. I decided to back up and circle around. The road he was on T’s in to the road I’m on. I circle and get to where the roads meet. I sat down and just listened for a while. After a few minutes, a bird gobbled down that road about 75 yards but off the other side. I figured he was headed to another plot on down. I let out a few yelps and GOBBBLLLLEEEEE. I clucked and yelped again and GOBBBBLLLEEEE! Oh yeah, he’s hot…..but where is his hens I thought. I called again..GOBBBBLLLEEEEE. Yeah, I’m thinking he is being nice. But oh no, he’s getting closer and now the game is starting to heat up. I call again and GOBBBBLLLEEEE. Yes sir, then another gobble and now I’m thinking there are two birds. Well, I shut up and wait a couple of minutes. I purr and yelp real soft on the ol Primos diaphragm and GOBBBLLLLEEEEEE. He is close, maybe 60 yards behind some dirt mounds and I’m thinking he has locked up. But oh no, my tricks are still in the bag. I start purring real aggressive and cutting but not hard. Then, I shut up. I wait maybe 2 minutes and yelp again real soft. GOBBBBLLEEEEE. He’s in the road, just around the corner and then it happened. You turkey hunters know the feeling…like the deal is closed. I started smiling as I knew he was dead. Then, three he was, rounding the corner and coming right at me at 35 yards. I let him soak it in..you know…..that feeling of OH S@$T, there’s no hen here. LOL I gathered my thoughts, took it all in and let the Hevi-Shot fly. Flipped him like a high diver. Good solid 3 year old. 1” spurs and worn down 9” beard. He had been strutting as his beard was ugly. He was 18lbs, about average for 3 year olds on our place. Year has started good. I’ve been in the woods 5 days and saw 3 turkeys hit the dirt. Two in Georgia and now one in Tennessee.

Radio show in Birmingham was talking to them. They were near the GA line for a charity hunt with a bunch of country singers. Can't remember the website though. Good to see some well known faces doing good things with their jobs. My hat is off to Waddell and the roadtrip crew.

Re: cost of tags in your state? Here in Alabama, it's $16 (going up to $24 I think) Gets you two deer a day and one buck per day, no limit on either bucks or does. Things are changing I hope though. Talks of limits and antler restrictions are getting heated. My TN license is $251 which is where I hunt mostly.

TEAM #16: BackWoods Bird Slingers
tennswamper replied to Strut10's topic in Announcements & Online Contests
Re: TURKEY TEAM #16 I don't care what the name is. LOL Just get out there and whack some birds!!!!! Start here next week and I'll be hunting through mid May. Surely I can find one bird. lol -
Re: broke up She don't have feelings for you. WAKE UP! Sorry but maybe that'll help you get over her quicker. IF she had feelings for you, she wouldn't have cheated in the first place. You got a lot of things going for you and you seem like a nice guy. That will get you over her and on to a girl with decent morals. I know, I know, I'm being rude but if there is one thing I've learned in life, it's the fact that if someone has to cheat, they care nothing about the other one.
