  2. Re: Deer Dogging?? I've been around dog hunters my whole life and to be honest, I've never met these so called idiots. Maybe it's an Arkansas thing or south Alabama thing. I'm not sure. What I do know is this, I know dozens of poachers who have never deer hunted over a dog. From baiting to spotlighting and points in between. It's not the sport and some need to realize that. I no longer hunt in a dog club in Alabama, haven't in several years. I did enjoy it but I moved on to other things. I will say this also, every dog club I have every been in was more courteous, more family oriented and has less arguments and rules violations than any stalk/still hunting club I have ever known. Everyone got along and all had GW numbers in their pockets in case someone broke a law. Anyone and everyone was welcome. As a guest many times at dog clubs, I was treated like family.
  3. Just checking on what to expect with deer movement the first five days of December. Decided to do mzl this year since I couldn't get to NE for next week's rifle hunt.
  4. Re: 140\" or better.. How many have U seen in your Probably 50 total. Mostly in Texas on good ranches and Nebraska.

    Dog hunting

Re: Dog hunting Dog hunting never was about killing to 99% of the guys I grew up hunting with. We just had fun and socialized. I hear many lies and myths spoken about it and I can only laugh. NOrmally from folks not around it or exaggerating the truth. I've never met a legal dog hunter that was a bad person. Either way, I don't do it anymore. Not because I don't think it's right, I just enjoy other aspects of deer hunting now. I do enjoy rabbit hunting with my beagles however.
  6. I just ordered a Burris Speeddot for my Omega. It came with Weaver style rings. It is a 35mm red dot. My problem is this. What kind of base do I get for this scope so I can mount it??????????????
  7. Re: Pope and Young 4X4?????? http://www.buckfax.com/World_record8pt.htm This was a gun however.
  8. Re: Pope and Young 4X4?????? Ya'll sure the record 8pt isn't from Michigan at 186" and some change?
  9. Looking at the 32mm Pine Ridge Red Dot for my new Omega. Any experience?
  10. Re: buck to doe ratios Actually, 1 camera per 160 acres will almost get you a precise population census and ratio. Remember, no salt licks/plots. Bait only, such as corn. Dispersal happens but you almost always get a 0 net loss. You lose 10, you gain 10 from your neighbors. Here is partly a quoted post by a biologist and it clearly shows how it can't get to skewed. "Now let's use even larger numbers, something that may be ocurring county-wide, and let's use a ratio as screwed up as 1,000 to 1." In year 1, you have: 1000 does 1 buck In year two, you have: 1500 does 501 bucks "Now keep in mind, the key here is healthy fawn recruitment. Also, I hope you will all agree that no herd is that skewed to begin with. Using simple math, you can see that heavily skewed ratios are near impossible over large expanses." You can shoot every yearling buck every year for 50 years and shoot 0 does and it won't get much more than 3:1. Of course, if you have severe browse lines, your recruitment probably isn't as good.
  11. Re: ***The burglars only took the good stuff****** If I catch them in my house, they are history. I hope they have plenty of money for a funeral. New Bama law says I don't have to retreat, so,.....I'm not going to!
  12. Re: buck to doe ratios Also, remember that what you see while hunting is probably no where close to what is actually is. Only through camera census can you truly know what your ratio is.
  13. Re: buck to doe ratios [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Almost impossible to have ratios worse than 3:1 in the majority of the country. [/ QUOTE ] Except in areas or states where you have misguided management principles in place. And 5:1 is NOT a good ratio. 2:1 is fair, 1.5:1 is good, and 1:1 is best. [/ QUOTE ] In badly overpopulated areas where population badly exceeds carrying capacity. Not many areas left where that is the case due to high doe limits in most states. Average fawn recruitment will keep the ratio at 3:1 or better, just due to 1 buck for ever doe being born every year. Even in buck only areas. I didn't think so either but was given a lesson by a biologist and I can't argu with what he gave me. As clear as day.

  15. Re: Just got him scored Nothing wrong with 142" of antler!!!!!!!!!!! Delete that deduction line. Taking inches away from a deer should be a crime.
  16. Re: 1x TC scopes 257, you are probably right. I didn't mean that post like it sounded. Sorry if it did. I am also looking at some red dots. I have no experience with them. However, one friend who is going just bought a Burris and I'm going to shoot his Omega with it and see how I like it. Heck, at this point, I'm open to anything. I've been shooting open sights on my Knight for the last two years. I'm just looking for any advantage. The dang deer seem to have plenty of them. lol
  17. Re: 1x TC scopes Any scope is better than open sights IMHO. Reason being, every sight I have ever looked at covers the vitals up past 75 yards. I very well could have to take a 200 yard shot and I kinda expect at least 100. I don't have a problem shooting my Knight 200 yards but knowing where I'm hitting is what I'm worried about.
  18. I need some advice here. Instead of hunting NE with a gun, I'm going in DEC with a MZL this year. Their regs states that scopes must be 1X only. Therefore, I'm leaning towards the TC scope. IT is a 1X x 32mm I believe. Anyway, the others are Burris and Nikon but both are 20mm and I really don't like them. Has anyone used the TC and if so, do you like it. I shoot 100gr so the recoil won't be to bad on the scope but it says they are recoil resistant.
  19. Re: Alabama deer ????? I did see a spotted fawn near New Hope, AL (at the Lock) in January a few years ago.
  20. Re: Alabama deer ????? Does bred in November will drop in June. Does bred in December will drop in July. In some parts of AL, the ruts is in November and December. In other parts (south) the first rut is in late December with the peak 2nd rut being in January and in extreme southern AL, the first rut is in late January. In NW AL, they start in November and I have seen bucks chasing in Marshall CO, AL in late November but most in mid-late December. I'm guessing the first rut is not very noticable due to badly skewed buck:doe ratios, which makes the 2nd rut more visable.
  21. Re: Moved to Huntsville, AL I sent you an email. Hope it helps and feel free to ask anything.
  22. Re: How Many Buck Can You Take in Your State? 1 per day, no season limit I hunt in TN 99% of the time, where it is 3. TN made a good move and it's paying off HUGE! WIsh AL would do the same.
  23. Re: my food plot is gone [ QUOTE ] theres hogs within three miles every direction from my land (knock on wood) i don't have any yet [/ QUOTE ] Us to in southern TN. Wayne Co is full of them but we've only seen tracks a couple of times. Thankfully, they have stayed in the creek bottoms away from us.
  24. Re: IL outfitter question Thanks guys. For my info, why does the state set aside 7500 tags for outfitters in the drawing? I don't hunt IL but might be good to know all this if I decide to go in the future.
  25. Posting this for a friend. He has booked a 5 day bowhunt in IL. He has paid his deposit. The outfitter is being confusing on tags. Does the outfitter normally supply the tags and if so, is it smart to go ahead and apply for one himself in case the outfitter doesn't get his? I don't know anyone that has used an outfitter in IL. All went public or private so I didn't know. Any help would be appreciated.
