  1. Good luck to everyone and God Bless down there.
  2. Very cool. Congrats to her and the old man for raising her right!
  3. I agree. The deer are the variable you can never control. It is proven that deer are capable of jumping the string of even the fastest bows. They may not totally avoid getting hit, but the hit won't be where the shooter intended. My experience is that bad things have the potential to happen after 30 yards and at higher percentages the further away you go. Just think of all the things a deer could do from the time your brain tells your finger to release until the arrow gets there. To me, that is the bigger question. Throw some wind into the mix and things are even more questionable. I personally strive to keep all shots inside 30 yards.
  4. Doe and big buck sightings are done. Only deer moving are fawns and scrubs. Lock Down is here.
  5. Very nice. Love seeing those big 8s like that. Cool thing about a buck like that is that he was probably passed by someone at an earlier age.
  6. Ditto buddy. Eat a piece of cake for me.
  7. Most certainly it depends on the rating for each gun but many folks who desire better accuracy shoot/mearure loose powder thus creating a large variable from brand to brand. Loose powder is where you may get some discrepancies between brands and powder measure tools.
  8. Interesting if the proportion is accurate/similar over the range of propellants. 158 grains by volume should still be within the safe limits of the gun (over designed for safety) I would think. They should have a safety margin engineered into the gun but I can't say that for sure. I do know a few guys with T/C Encores that tinker with hotter than 150gr. loads but are avid muzzleloader shooters and reloaders. They are knowledgeable about pressure signs and the safety issues that go along with it. They don't routinely shoot those loads but wanted to see what their guns were capable of under certain conditions. It was pretty interesting to say the least. Blackhorn 209 powder recommends 120gr. as equivalent to 150gr. of other powders. That kinda throws another monkey wrench into the novice/casual muzzleloader demographic.
  9. One advantage is that you generally know which direction your wind is going and you can worry less about it swirling and deer bagging ya. 35mph though is pretty strong. Not every setup will tolerate wind like that. Pick a stand that may protect you a little.
  10. CVAs won't take that kind of punishment. He is lucky he didn't get hurt!!!
  11. I like their show. They seem pretty genuine and I grew up playing a lot of hard ball. I don't care for shows filming at outfitters. I prefer the groups that own their own land or "farm" because at least they are doing the work and paying the bills, not someone else.
  12. Put the Primos Scar Buck out again for yesterday afternoon's hunt. The does stood off again, often at 100-150 yards and head bobbed and even blew at it. I had Curly, my target 4 year old 8pt., a 3 year old 8pt. and a few scrubs on the field sniffing and running does. They would not come closer than 100 yards and again a doe blew running off a bunch of the deer. At the end, Curly was leaving the field 300 yards away so I got on the True Talker and Rattled to try to turn him. No luck but a 2 year old 8pt came from my right along the field edge at a pretty good pace right to the decoy. He bagged me when the wind swirled but would have been dead would he been a taker. What a fun and frustrating night!!!

    To Our Veterans

God Bless each and every one of you. We owe you beyond words.
  14. Nice job. That UTV looks huge!
  15. Just got home a little while ago after sitting in that same 30mph wind tonight. Actually heard and saw trees falling to the ground. Deer were very edgy.
  16. I saw him tonight. He looks even better on the hoof. Looks to be flirting with 18".
  17. First attempt at video posting via Photobucket. Not a big fan of creating multiple media hosting accounts. It did work okay for me when I tried the link from a different computer. Hopefully I kill him this afternoon and then I'll just post a still pic of him.
  18. Very nice buck for the young man. You guys are having a good season.
  19. Finally got video of a target buck working a community scrape this week. He is a pretty nice 8pt. I call "Curly" due to his browtines curling inward toward each other. The last pics I had of him was in velvet in early/mid August. He is a 4 1/2 and the last time I saw him during daylight was when he was a 2 1/2. That was the one and only chance I had to kill him and obviously I didn't. Care to take a guess at him. He will be a very respectable 8pt. but nothing monsterous.
  20. Good post, thanks. The secluded field I refer to always has deer feeding in it in the afternoon/evening. Part of the problem is that the wind swirls badly, especially when winds are light. It is very difficult to stay undetected all the time because the wind ( I think the river to the south affects it ) can be unpredictable even when religiously monitoring the hourly forecasts prior to that evening's hunt. The hope with the decoy is to draw deer but keep them just distant enough so as not to have them smell me when/if the wind swirls. It would be a crap shoot then when a buck finally challenges the decoy as to what the wind is doing at the time. Once our firearm season hits on the 23rd, the ensuing blaze orange war zone will make this area's deer herd nocturnal until at least Christmas. By that time, the food source will not be drawing the deer because the freeze will kill it off. I am on a mission to say the least. The area is awesome fun but terribly stressful and frustrates the crap out of me.
  21. TTT Maybe few folks use decoys. Still want to hear your thoughts.
  22. Nice buck. I agree with Pat. If he is at the top for your local bucks, he is a taker if he trips your trigger.
  23. I have personally used the one in this link. It worked awesome and made sharpening quick and easy. I sharpened everything from fillet knives to buck knives. Great tool. Work Sharp Electric Knife and Tool Sharpener : Cabela's
  24. Glad to see you broke the dry spell. My last archery buck was 2010 and I feel the need too. Congrats.
