  1. waitin on the buffleheads and goldeneyes mostly!!! Theres always a few Old Squaws, Scooters , Ringnecks, Cans, Gadwalls, Teal and a surprise here and there......but that aint until it gets cold. As for waitin for drakes.....i tried.. i shot the 'whitest' one out of the first flock and the next flock was 5 hens as far as i could tell...never did see a drake bill the whole morning (in range anyways).
  2. haha...im glad im not the only one who does that!! TALK TO ME GOOSE!...WHERE IS HE?! .........PERMISSION TO BUZZ THE TOWER..?? NEGATIVE GHOSTRIDER, THE PATTERN IS FULL.. (Topgun the movie for those of u who think im nutz rite now lol )
  3. http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/ee204/CatScratchFever_WI/?action=view&current=Picture.jpg Took about 15 minutes after shooting time to get 'em... WI limit is 6 ducks but only 2 can be reds and 2 bills. Thats all thats on the lake i hunt until it gets colder so i was pretty much done shooting after i got these. But i got to sit and watch flocks decoy for the next hour and a half it was a blast!!
  4. Unbelievable...why is it so hard for people to use common sense? My thoughts go out to family and friends.
  5. I didnt think about gettin into a treestand this weekend. Pretty warm in WI too...mid 80's. Went goose hunting instead, only because there is a pond about 100yds from the road lol. Not too hot to walk that far. And geese aint gonna smell me and ruin my spot lol !!
  6. The sooner the better i would say. I wouldnt leave it overnite in this heat thats for sure. Im in WI and i havent even gone out in this crappy weather lol. As long as its field dressed and packed with ice i would think it would be ok for a few hours..... i am by no means an expert though. If it were me i wouldnt drag my feet about gettin it cooled down properly.
  7. Leave that range finder at home or use it once u get in the stand and then shucker it away in a backpack lol..as for grunt tubes and binos...my tube is the only thing around my neck when im in the stand. If a deer is far away enuff to use binos on...he aint gonna see u reach into your pocket to get em out. I take a back pack with me with everything i could possibly need...from snacks to allen wrenches..i hang it on a limb or a tree step or whatever. No need to choke yourself while in the tree lol
  8. If the 100gr. spitfires dont work (although they should) u could always try the 85gr. Thats what i use. They can be hard to find in some areas but i have had no problems with them. They leave a little bit smaller hole than the 100's but ill take the added speed that comes with them any day. I shoot about 65-68# with a hair under 26'' arrow (overdraw). The draw weight u are shooting should be sufficient to fully open a mechanical head with no problems. Good luck!!
  9. the farthest i will shoot is about 35yds. Mainly because i dont practice much for anything past that. And in alot of my stands there is just too much brush, branches, and other things that i would have to take a bulldozer in to even think about shooting more than that.
  10. congrats on the doe....sounds like it was a quite a hunt! I know the feeling of holding that buck sticker in your hands...its great aint it?? lol I filled my eab on opening nite on a nice doe...now i can horn hunt too. I have mixed feelings on the eab situation. In some areas of the state its probably a good idea...but definately not everywhere it is in action now. It has its pros and cons. Its pretty hard to enforce too..the zone next to the one i hunt isnt eab, so all a guy would have to do is shoot a buck and take it a few miles away and register it there. Still a lot of kinks to work out that is for sure.
  11. Sounds like u aint leading the birds enough....body shots with any brand of shells is going to be iffy. Ive tried a handfull of different shells the past few years and no matter which one i used if i didnt get good hits in the front 1/3 of the bird they didnt always come down like a ton of bricks. Pellets in the head whether they come in a $10 box or a $30 box = dead ducks
  12. I agree..about the same.. once u get bit by the 'duck bug' u wont notice the recoil lol as soon as the action picks up u wont feel a thing.
  13. i havent done any serious field hunting in a while...but i agree with dogdoc. I have never put out any duck decoys on land..but i have had flocks of mallards do 'fly overs' within shooting range with only goose decoys out. I would have to believe if there were some duck decoys out , they probably would have actually decoyed. I cant see it hurting anything if u put both out, so if ya got em, might as well use em. The exception would be green fields, i pesonally have never seen ducks in a green field, only grain fields. * if u do use both, i would not mix them together much..kinda keep the ducks in their own little spot*
  14. missed my first shot at a doe...Then i shot the first deer i could that didnt have spots lol which was a nice little 9pt.
  15. I wouldnt worry much about spooking deer with the dead missing squirrel lol. I took a poke at a coyote that came wheeling in on some turkeys opening morning....shot a little high and only got some fur. Well bout 20 min later a doe and twins came in. The doe stood over the fur smelling it for a good 3 min straight...looking around and just acting confused. after that she kept on grazing and the three made their way like it wasnt event there.
  16. Between myself and the folks i know who shoot spitfires...dozens of deer have been taken with them over the years since they came out. I havent heard of any bad experiences with them...with the heads themselves... a few bad hits are in the mix ... but thats not the heads fault. As for me...im going to keep shooting them until i find a good reason not to...with any luck that wont happen.
  17. Well my least favorite weekend to duck hunt finally came and went... Got a few woodies and a couple of honkers between the four of us. Pretty warm for ducks if u ask me. My buddies son had his first duck hunt where he could actually shoot, so that was cool. Usually its some yahoos crowding us or skybusting or people fishing 75yds from the decoys that annoys me on this weekend. This year it was my own hunting party:). Between my buddy claiming he or his kid shot a goose that i know i got...i fired first and it was on its way down when they started blasting. Or my dad of all people ( this issue drives us both mad so i cant believe he did it) shooting my side of the flock, which he did TWICE!! I didnt open my mouth about the goose thing...not that big of a deal...there will be plenty more where that one came from. And i wanted to make sure that my friends son had a good time and will want to keep goin duck squashin'. MAN AM I GLAD OPENING WEEKEND IS OVER!!!!!!!!! BRING ON THE NORTH WINDS, COLD MORNINGS AND MOST IMPORTANT........THE DIVERS!!!!
  18. Add one more Packer fan to the list!!! Bring on Da Bears! and those silly Viqueens!
  19. I had wondered about an '08' car too, thought that might work. And speaking of paint....call me crazy but....i think an old school paint scheme like 'cole trickles' mellow yellow car in Days of Thunder would look pretty sharp out there!! Make it look like the cars that his dad drove back in the day!
  20. We use about 4 dozens cork floaters...a mix of bluebills, redheads and cans mainly. Later in the year we toss a dozen cork buffs and a few cork goldeneyes. Usually two main flocks with a hole in between with two hens and a drake in the hole. A small flock of cork honkers on one side and a little flock of cork mallards on the other. And a few minutes after sun up some of the thousands of coots on the lake usually invade the blocks so we get some movement thanks to mother nature.
  21. Spitfires are great as far as im concerned! Now granted i personally have only killed three deer with them, but other guys i know use em and have killed dozens with them over the years. They do leave big holes i will say that! As far as penetration goes.... i shoot an overdraw so my arrows are fairly light (short) and i use 85 gr. spitfires shooting about 65lbs. ive never had a problem. The doe i shot on sat was almost at 35yds and it went clear thru with no problems. If considering mechanicals....these get my vote.
  22. I had a good Wisconsin opener too.. Had 7 jakes in the food plot with me opening morning, i saw movement on my right, and it was 2 coyotes coming in on the turkeys. One of them gave me a shot, but it all happened so fast that i only had a few seconds to react. So i didnt bag me a coyote, but he left with a pretty groovy little haircut on his back. (i looked for blood only found hair). The two started chasin the turkeys but the jakes fought back and ran the dogs rite out of the food plot...that was entertaining. I also managed to bag a nice doe sat nite, so i got my golden egg of a buck sticker . Also saw a pretty good little 8 pt on sunday nite. So other than my fiberoptics on my pin breakin off...it was a good weekend.
  23. There is a huge difference between pass shooting and skybusting. Pass shooting, in my eyes is perfectly acceptable, i myself have done it before. But shooting at every goose, duck, whatever, that flies by whether they are in range or not seems a little bit unethical if u ask me. If a person doesnt have decoys, i doubt they have a dog.... what if u wound a bird and it falls into heavy cover, or in water..what then?? Just my thoughts. I realize my version of skybusting may be different than others too. By me there are way too many "one shot willies" and it gets old after a while. More times than not they foil a hunt for guys who spent the time to train a dog, scout a spot, put out decoys, get good on a goose call etc. They are as welcome to those birds as the next guy....but it just gets annoying after a while
  24. i live in southern WI but hunt a little west of Green Bay. Saw a few flocks that were definately migrating. Saw those in central state. as far as i can tell its all locals in the southern part. I work outside and i aint seen much for migrators down in milwaukee area. Almost had a few locals this weekend.....didnt quite work out tho....wind was wrong on the river and the darn horses kept em from decoyin in the fields!!!
  25. Used to hunt geese a lot more than i do now. I dont really target just geese anymore. I buy a license and throw out some goose blocks while in the duck boat, just in case. I hunt divers almost exclusively. only exception is opening weekend and maybe the one after (opens sep 22), only because there arent any divers down yet. We get a good mix of bills, redheads, golden eyes, some cans and lots of buffs. Throw in a few teal, a flock of old squaws and the occasion scooter, thats the season in a nutshell. Them teal really love them goose decoys
