  1. I went with a combo kit from cabela's when I started. Looked at it as what can I get the most for my money. So I got a Reflex Bighorn with site and rest. I upgraded to a Hoyt last year. This year I'm upgrading my bow accesories. My bow season is almost 2 months long so I want my tool to be a fine tune killing machine.
  2. Well I bid on one of the G5 ME models on ebay and won the auction. So I have a new site on the way. Now I just need to get a check out to Bucknasty and get my order for my string in.
  3. Well I'm looking on ebay and found the G5 Optix ME. Looks like the precursor to the XL. I also talked with Bucknasty and need to see if any of my bow hunting partners are looking to get a new string for their setups too. I'm really getting excited about getting my bow set back up and getting to get it so I know that the arrows are flying to the same spot everytime. I'm wanting to get it set up so I can get it tuned and really work on my form over the summer. I want the confidence in my shot placement to be excellent. phil
  4. This is my buddy Nate and I. His first NC buck. Took it with a home made recurve and cedar arrows.

    What Bow

I shoot a Hoyt MagnaTec ZR200 It is about 7 years old now, getting ready to upgrade components on her as she still looks like new.
  6. 8pt. Thanks for John's number. I don't even have to dial area code. He must be somewhere near by. I guess everyone must agree with you. No one else is suggesting anything else.
  7. Well, I've been looking at my bow, Hoyt MagnaTec ZR200 I got this as a used bow. All I did when I got it was put on a Whisker Biscuit. So I think that I will be upgrading some of the components on it. I have a couple other things that I know that I'm going to do. One, I'm getting a custom string made for it. Not sure who I'm going to get it from. I've seen BuckNasty mentioned lots but can't find a website it order to contact them. I want to buy some Alpha Shox for my limbs. And I'm looking into a new sight. I want something that I will be able to have better low light visibility. But I haven't figured out what I will get. Any suggestions on this would be great. I have a cobra right now with 4 pins on it. But don't know if I want to shoot multiple pins or if I want a single pin adjustable. So I guess I'm wanting to know what some of you think about sites that are good at low light levels. What are the Pro's and Con's that you notice from single pin adjustable to multi-pin sites? Probably going to be getting some new carbon sticks this season too, but that is kinda 6 of one half dozen another type of opinion.
  8. I like using the cable machines at my gym. I will adjust them to multiple levels. I will do pulls with it that are similar to pulling my bow back, then I will hold it for 5 seconds "pinched back" so it is lock in like you would your bow string into you anchor points. Then I do a very slow return. I also like doing the lawn mower pulls where you reach down and pick up a weight from the floor and in a fluid motion pull it off the floor and lift it up your body, you can do this just to your shoulder height, or you can continue and rotate the weight at your shoulder height and continue to extend your arm to full height above your head. Both of these exercise use the same muscle groups that you shoot with. I prefer to shoot all year long, but I find that about a month before season starts, I start adding these exercises to my routine.
  9. Thanks everyone. The hair on the mount is really thin, but it was still in the summer coat and just had longer hairs coming in. I can hardly find the seam line where she sewed it up. I'm really happy with it.
  10. I got a call last week saying my mount was ready to pick up. I figured that I wouldn't be picking it up until the summer, but I did shoot him opening day so he was the first on in this season. Still in full velvet. There is even one of the ticks that was on the velvet still attached on the mount. I haven't measured it. She did a beautiful job. I'm really excited to have it up on my wall.
  11. a little video that the guy I went out with put together
  12. I used them a couple times this season. I figured out that the crimp on the end is too long for my Mossburg 500. They shoot nice, but they would hang up on the ejection. The open crimped edge would catch and prevent the reload. So, for me BLackCloud is a no go.
  13. Today was the last day of waterfowl season here in NC.We started the day off with a pair of Bufflehead swimming into our deeks. We put them up and only managed to get the male. Then, a little while later we pick one up come fast and low right to left and I set her down with one shot. Ends up she was a Merganser.Since is was the last day my partner and I decided to hunt the afternoon too. I'm glad we did. I could see a couple birds off a point a couple hundred yards away, so I asked if he could do maybe a hail call, He isn't much of a caller. So I tried. I've never called, but I tried it. They didn't seem all that interested, but about 3 or 4 minutes we see the drake setting wings. I winged him but the shell didn't fully eject so my partner hit him on the water. My first mallard isn't a bad way to close a season.
  14. Well, the snow didn't start until I got home. But we had more action today then last week. I didn't pull the trigger on a bufflehead that gave me a perfect left to right this morning. But we had a flock of 30 canada geese locked up and coming in. They dropped about 50 yards outside the edge of the deeks. Then just as I get the first bite of eggs into my mouth I see a pair of ducks coming in and I say something to the other guy in the blind, set down my plate, stand up and grab the gun. we both shoot and miss. But his dog didn't miss the opportunity and ate 2 sausage patty's off my plate. Next saturday is the last time I will get to go out, so hopefully we will score next weekend.
  15. Well, I'm going out again tomorrow, but I am going to leave my dog at home. It is supposed to be Mixed Snow showers all day tomorrow. Hopefully that means more shooting. But that would also mean exposing my dog to more gun shots without him being broken on being gun shy. His loss. I will get him over that during the up coming year and take him out next year.
  16. I don't think that I'm going to take him back out. The guy that I went with has a young lab but she isn't gun shy at all. I will wait and work with him on getting over being afraid of that loud noise. Thanks for posting the link to that article. phil
  17. Saturday I went out with my dog Jackson for the first time. He has never been hunting before. But he has had a dead fowl trainer for a long time and he loves the water. We saw 4 mallards a little after shooting time, but they where way off. We also saw a Merganser that was circling way up but wouldn't commit to come in. We didn't hear but 4 shots all morning. The birds just weren't moving. So we practiced the dogs. I was really proud of Jackson. He was retrieving the dead fowl trainer and leaving the deeks alone. Then we tried throwing it followed by a shot and he froze up before even getting to the water. After that he was wanting to just get as far into the corner of the blind as possible. So I guess that I will have to work on breaking him of being gun shy. Didn't shoot any ducks, but had a great time and can't wait to go again.couple shots from the other day.
  18. I don't know what it is about people around here. Went out to take down my stand but someone else decided to do it for me. That is 2 stands in 2 years from different locations. They left the harness and the rope but they are way up the tree. My steps are gone too, so No I'm not going to rescrew steps into the tree to retrieve my rope and harness. #^(*$^(*_)#_@*(&$& Thanks
  19. WOW That is a brute for down here. Nice tall tines on him too. Glad to hear deer are responding to horns too.
  20. Insurance should cover the truck with a deer collision. I got one with my truck a few years ago. Did get on the breaks. Caught it square in the grill. Cops came and we never found the deer. Kinda bummed me out knowing that it more then likely went off and died.
  21. When I hunt during gun season I will wear my blaze orange hat to the treestand. Once i get up I take it off and put it on the closest branch and settle in with my camo hat on. The orange is still right next to me but it isn't moving around. Bonus to private land I guess.
  22. Nice buck, There is some serious mass to that main beam. Heavy bodied too.
  23. WHAT A GREAT LOOKING DEER!! Just let him know that a scope cut is a badge of honor. Maybe it will form a little scar and when people ask him about how it happened he will get to tell them about his first deer he shot hunting with his dad.
  24. check youtube. they will have processing how to video's
  25. Here, we call the DNR and report a kill on the phone. It is all automated. The system gives you a number and you write it on your tag. I have a Sportman's license.
