I went back out this afternoon without luck. I did a grid search out to about 100 yards or so. The problem is I hunted mainly in swamp which really limits where I can find her laying. I feel absolutly horrible not finding this deer. I will try again once more in the morning after my morning hunt. Its raining now so if there was any blood trail left, its gone now! =(

Last night I went out during a rain storm in hopes of seeing something when the rain passed by. About 45 minuts before dark, a big bodies 6 point came out of some thick underbrush about 45 yards away. I grunted, which got him interested, but not interested to come on in. I decided to go out this morning and climb the same tree for a 7:30am major feed time. At 7:50, a nice doe and yearling came out in front of me. I figured I needed some meat so I took a 20 yard broadside shot at the doe. The arrow hit right behind the upper shoulder for what looked like a perfect shot. I waited over an hour and half in hoped of the buck showing back up. I finally got ansy and went looking for the doe. I found my arrow broken in half and covered in blood. I found two more piles of blood 15 or so yards away and then nothing! I was on my hands and knees for at least 3 hours and never found one more trace of blood. I really do feel extremly sad I have wasted this deer. I had two friends come out and help track as well, with no luck. I was amazed there could be that much blood and then nothing at all! I will try and go back out after work this afternoon. The worst part is that I feel I have ruined a good spot by looking all over the place for a blood trail, leaving my sweaty odor everywhere I went.

Which is better? Or less bad? Scent Control
ChasinTail replied to ChasinTail's topic in Deer Hunting
Thanks guys! Good to know that the normal stuff is probably just fine. -
I don’t have access today to any scent control deodorant. Which do you think would be less intrusive; light application of normal deodorant or my natural body odor? Its hot and I will be sweating!

I have gotten poison ivy so bad I have been admitted to the hospital twice because of swellingand treated with steriods. I have learned to manage it and limit spreading. I rub a swab of rubbing alcohol to help dry it up. You can always get benedryl too. Hot water is very relieving for the itch. The key is to keep itching to a minimum to prevent spreading. Once it starts spreading, its over!

Well I had about as good of a hunt you can have with out actually killing anything! I purchased a new Lone Wolf climber and decided to take it out for a last minute test run. I didn't go into any of my "honey holes" as to not spook anything while learning my new stand. After the first 30 minutes I had two burly hogs walk under me. I figured I would let them walk in hopes of seeing a buck. Shortly after, a nice doe came in but never offered a clean shot. Then a bearded Osceola turkey came by, once again not offering a shot. Finally, a doe and a big bodied 4 point came through about 75 yards away. I grunted and the buck immediatly turned and sprinted to about 40 yards away. He kept his head down and ran in a complete circle three times in a row. Not being comfortable with that long of a shot, I didn't let an arrow fly. None the less, I had an action packed, exciting evening of hunting. By the way, I love the new Lone Wolf!

I used this stuff in the preseason once a week. Everytime I came to check my spots, the ground was all torn up so I guess it has some draw to it. My problem is, I found out it doesn't taste too bad! I kept eating some of it on the way out to pour it out. Pretty sure it can't be good for you either.

I do see how this could be beneficial if the wind changes up on you after you are in your stand. Just launch a couple "scent rockets" downwind and you are covered again. I have pulled off tree bark and dripped a bit of scent on it and tossed it down wind to get a little cover. Maybe not the whole paintball gun but someone is trying to be inovative none the less! Disclamer, I promise I am not with this guy trying to sell anything, just playing devil's advocate

Thats awesome! Thats always a great feeling when you get new land with all new potential.

There are a few spots where the fence is broken down. One is in an open area where I guess only a ground blind would work. The other area is right up against some really thick stuff where I'm sure they are approaching but never see anything when I sit there. Like I said before, they always seem to pop up right in the middle of the field! I assure you I am not sleeping in my stand either!!!

Thats what sick days are for!!

I see alot of does around the property but usually they are out in fields well beyond my bow range. Are than any sure fire techniques for bringing does closer? I have tried doe bleats with mixed and limited success. It seems like they are not as smart (or not as instinctive) as mature bucks, but they seem to have me outsmarted! =) I have hunted areas where they travel into these areas too but they always seem to just pop up on in the middle of the pastures!

Im glad you asked that. I was just wondering the same thing. I am always scared to start too early and spook something rather than bring em' in.

Whitetails for me! Thats what I have dedicated my studies and time to.

Obviously the more time in the woods, the better your chances are for hunting success. What I am wondering is can I do more harm than good by visiting my stands, say the last hour and half after work or the first hour and half before work? I really concentrate on wind and stand selection as to not overstep my boundries and spook out deer. However, I never really feel the woods get settled after I get in there. Should I just wait until the days where I can dedicate several hours or even a full day or do you think my short trips into the stands are beneficial? I don't want to be walking to stands an hour before dark just to spook a deer headed to his feeding spot! Right? Any advice?

Bow season starts for me on Saturday and I couldn’t be more pumped! I have some great stand locations set up for multiple wind scenarios. My dad and I have made every Thursday since June a scout/ bow practice day. Well yesterday, we decided to shoot our bows one last time and give our arms a break for Saturday. On my 5th shot, it sounded like a .22 fired off and my arrow just disappeared into thin air. Apparently, my bow cracked and my new string completely frayed. I still have no clue where my arrow went (very scary). Anyways, I feel unlucky this happened, but very lucky it didn’t happen on a deer this coming weekend. Fortunately, I had to work right next to BassPro today (my girlfriend would say unfortunately)! I came away with a new Bear Lights Out that was on sale. This is my first brand new bow and now I am feeling more excited than ever. I was able to get comfortable with it at their indoor range and feel much more confident for Saturday than I did before my old bow broke. Does anyone else have the Lights Out bow on here? It seemed like a great bow for the price...

If I dont have to relocate for work (previous post), I have planned on improving my small piece of property. I have a mixture of swamp, palmetto flat, planted field, and pine forest. I was wanting to plant some sort of plot along with some possible shooting lanes and easier access for entering the woods in the am. I have always hunted "el natural" without changing the enviroment, but feel it is time to step up the commitment to serious hunting. I would like any ideas or proven tactics if anyone is willing to offer. If you need any more specifics, just let me know. Thanks ahead of time!

Hi all, My work recently informed me my position is most likely being relocated to Asheville, NC. I have hunted most of my life in north Florida (which believe it or not has produced decent bucks). My first question to any guys in NC. Is there quality hunting near Asheville? My research so far has only turned up lots of talk about Anti's and far left residents! I even heard of a lady in the news paper saying hunter's children may create the next Columbine! I am scared this area is not hunter friendly at all and may be a bad move for my hunting passion. Next, if there is huntable land in this area, how easy is it for a newcomer to gain access to such places? Any help or encouragment would be appreciated as I may be looking for a new job!

I can't say I have ever done that but the irony would be great! I have missed the same buck two years in a row with the same bow, but that always happens =)

Hunting has always been my escape to get away from all the idiots of the world. However, they seem to be ruining hunting too. I have caught so many poachers this year, I dont know which parts of my woods are even huntable still! I hate to hear what these guys did during your hunt! What a shame.

What a great buck. Makes that horrible game yesterday easier to swallow! Go FSU!

Any tips for hunting small property after the rut has cooled down, the deer are more nocturnal, and the temps get colder. Obviously I have to change strategy but it seems my deer sightings go down sharply say mid Dec. I have heard hunting feeding areas is a good bet, but most of the feeding areas on my property are acorns which go away shortly. I have considered trying to get a bit closer to beading areas, but feel like I do more harm than good. I am at a lost and the time is closing in quickly! Any advice that you may have had success with would be greatly appreciated.

Like the other guys, I hunt anytime I have the chance. That said, my confidence goes up or down with certain phases of the moon. I seem to see less movement the morning after a full moon night. Vise versa, I seem to see magnified movement after a new moon. My favorite time to hunt is a major feed (moon straight up or straight down) either right after dawn or right before dusk. I have killed deer when all things pointed to no movement though! So who knows I guess is what Im trying to say! Here is a cool link though that offers lots of info.... http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/

I have had just as much luck as you, the only difference is all my luck has been bad luck! Nice Deer!
