    New Hunting area

If you don't already have maps of your area get some. You can start out with Google Earth or MapQuest. I advise you to spend some time watching from a distance. Find the thickest cover and you'll likely find a bedding area. Then find water and food. The deer will likely travel through a low spot or thick cover to get to the food and water. Post a map if you like and RT members can provide you with more precise info.
  3. Inexpensive small game hunting can be a lot of fun and teach you a lot. My tip would be to learn how to do things in a safe way and teach that to your kids. Shooting and tree stand hunting being the most important in my opinion. I never used a harness until a few years ago when my stand started to slide down the tree with me in it. It was a cheap stand and I had selected a poor tree. Luckily I wasn't hurt. Now I always use a harness. I suggest purchasing a harness that is easy to use because you'll be more likely to wear it. Also buy a quality tree stand. RT forum members can provide you with great advice about different types of hunting gear to buy.
  4. Uh Oh! In Illinois 2 bucks may be better than 1, but 3 bucks means no more fun. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is officer Lockaway U. Forever. Think I'll stop in for a visit tomorrow. I'll bet that youngster in the photo got that monster in the last picture. Looking foward to reading your explanation. Welcome to the RT forums.
  5. I have a small house and not much room for trophy heads. I'll have the same problem in October when my third deer head comes back. My wife only wants one in the living room. For some reason she doesn't want me to take down the pictures of the kids????? Anyway, I'm thinking of making the downstairs office my "mans room" or taking it to my office at work. Still trying to decide. Good luck!
  6. As long as you don't go over 20 feet in a tree ground sighting should be fine. I started hunting at 30 ft.+ last year. I had to adjust my pins. I now practice on the ground, but do my final pin adjustments 30 ft. up.
  7. Great looking deer! I like guessing antler inches. It looks like he'll be in the 170's non-typical.
  8. There was an article in the local newspaper a couple weeks ago about a black panther that has been spotted several times around Alton IL. The paper indicated it was either a large domestic cat or a black panther from Africa that someone had as a pet and escaped.
  9. No one has mentioned the drenalin from Mathews? Is something up with that bow I'm not aware of?
  10. I like the South East corner (right on the red line). I'd look for deer traveling around the southern part of the lake from one wooded area to the next.
  11. I used a hacksaw for years. I finally purchased a Wyoming saw and use the bone blade. It is much easier and takes about 1minute compared to 5 minutes with a hacksaw. I'd suggest the Wyoming saw.
  12. Glad to be a member! Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. >Frank
  13. I was in Idaho for the first time this past June bear hunting. It is difficult walking for sure. At least you shouldn't have snow to deal with like I had. I saw elk every day. Mostly cows, but one decent 3X3 in velvet. I was able to sneak up on elk a lot easier than whitetails, but mature bulls might be another story? Much of the area I was in was thicker than I expected. I was amazed at how easy an animal that large can just disappear. My advice is to spend the first couple days scouting. Find where the elk are before hunting them. One additional thing I learned is that elk droppings hang around for a long time. If it is not fresh it could have been there for weeks or even months. What I found is that once I started seeing elk, those same areas were the areas I kept seeing them day after day. Not sure if this changes in the fall? Good luck!
  14. I've seen that with a lot of big bodied deer. Looks like a 140 class bruiser from the picture, but it's hard to tell from the picture. Did you score it yet? Great mount.
  15. Thanks for the info swampy, your explanation makes me feel a lot better about it. I witnessed a patient (awake and talking) receive 50 joules once when the physician forgot to administer the sedation medication. It converted his heart rhythm into a normal rhythm:), and also converted his religious covictions toward swear words as evidenced by sentences that included several F-bombs and Mother F-bombs. Amazingly he didn't sue.
  16. I've been fortunate enough to harvest 2 typical whitetail deer that I'd consider monsters: a 149&3/8 incher and a bigger one I'm still waiting to get back from the taxi for an official score. My wife came up with an awsome idea of naming the first Sir Lancelot. I then decided to continue naming them after the knights of the round table. The second monster buck will be named Sir Galahad. There's a method to the madness of my naming but I will not bore you all with it. If interested you can look up the knights at: http://www.timelessmyths.com/arthurian/roundtable.html#List Anyway, currently I'm ready for a non-typical (200+) monster buck that will receive the name Merlin (the wizard). I'd take King Arthur (200+typical), but would like to work my way up to that final accomplishment that would complete the collection. I'd love to place them in the dining room of my future house! My wife's not to keen on that idea (yet). I'm 37 years old, but when it comes to hunting I still act like a dern 17 year old.
  17. Welcome back! Glad to hear the new job is working out for you. I agree. I'm still waiting for my first check from RT for my new hobbie as a forum member. When does it come... when I make 10-pointer?
  18. I have a wife and 3 kids (2-girls) and 1 bathroom. I abandoned our bathroom years ago. I now use the back field like our dog so there is no seat issue.
  19. I'm glad to hear you came out alright. Hoosierbuck has a point about cardiac dysrhythmias. I don't know the power of a taser but I know I have cardioverted patients with as little as 50 joules. We always have a crash cart available in case the patients heart goes into a worse rhythm or possibly even stops. If I were you I'd think hard about doing it in the future. At least make sure there are people present who know CPR and have a AED readily available.

    New hunting car

The seller accepted my offer. I'll be picking up my new hunting hot rod on Friday. My wife asked me how I would be getting the deer home if I got one while hunting with the little Mazda. I said I would tie it to the top of the trunk. I received a nice eye roll from her. That would make a nice picture (a 150 class buck strapped to my new 4-cyl).

    New hunting car

I drove the car and it rides great. There is a rattling sound when the AC / heater fan is turned on as well as a couple additional minor problems. I made an offer 1,150.00. I should know tomorrow. I checked at wal-mart and sure enough the refrigerant is there for 6.99 a can. It is different from the freon I used to use in my 69 Ford Fairlane I had in the 80's. I suppose it is some other substance (not freon)?
