  1. Looks like I need a new 2 gun travel case.
  2. Going to Montana end of October for a Combo Mule Deer Antelope hunt. This is my first trip out West and I am a little torn on which rifle to take as I only want to take one. With that said I have narrowed it down to either .270 A-bolt or .257 Weatherby Mag Vanguard. I am really leaning toward the Weatherby because of the Antelope hunting. I am very confident with both Rifles the .257 is just the one I like better for long range shots. I have killed several Whitetails with it but since I have never laid eyes on a Mule deer other than a video or a picture I would just like some feed-back. Is there any real concern with the .257 WBY Mag on Mulies. Load for the .257 will be 115 Gr Barnes TSX Handloads for .270 is shoot 130 Gr Nosler Partitions.
  3. It's a good woman that comments "it's good you can get new things for it" when referring to a gun. She's a KEEPER
  4. Decision made Good or bad and non-refunadable am now the owner of a Sig-P220 .45acp. Shot a couple of clips through it yesterday and cannot say that I have any complaints, thanks for all of the feedback. It is a little bigger frame than I had initially intended to buy but had a better feel for me than the other handguns I looked at and the reliability rating is very high. thanks for the feedback.
  5. My only advice is make sure she kills something before you do. When my wife used to hunt with me she would get mad everytime I killed a deer, women are very competetive. She walked in the woods one day and jumped a buck that ran right to me and I killed it, we almost got divorced over it.
  6. I am going to buy a .45 Government Model with 4" slide. Have never owned one before my other rhandguns are Glock, Beretta, and revolvers. I was kind of leaning toward the Kimber Pro Carry. Any recommendations the must have is AMBI safety because I am a Lefty. They seem to be like AR's everbody makes one now. I liked the Kimber but just wanted any feedback you guys may have.
  7. The safety of the BPS is on the tang like an over-under but that's better than in front of the trigger guard, As a lefty I flat out cannot shoot a gun with the safety in front of the trigger. This question of pump guns comes up all the time or at least it seems that way. I will elaborate on what I have seen. -Benelli NOVA- built great rattles like **** -Remingtion 870- good gun I have one 26" Barrel MO CAMO, does not mount great but if you shoot it all the time it's fine because you get used to it, I have a tendency too shoot high with it if I have been shooting my other guns more. -BPS great gun ambidextrous, slick action and mounts well. You cna also get it with the Duratouch finsih. It's a little more money than an 870 but I think it's worth it.
  8. You know the one you do not hear a lot about but I really like is the Browning BPS. They are wll balanced, shoot really well, and I like that they eject out of the bottom. (because I am left handed) I have the upland special model and i love it, for a Browning it's not a bank breaker either.
  9. Best Shot I ever made was on the biggest buck I ever killed. I walked him up in a clear cut with lot's of gulley's, stumps, and lap piles he was about about 85 yds and running wide open. I killed him on the 4th shot from my 30-06 Browning BAR. To say I was shooting quick would be an understatement. (I had 4 shells in the gun) now 85 yds may not seem far but when the horns are big and the ground is un-even and the deer is fast and your shooting off hand, well i am gald I only missed 3 times. He hangs on the wall to this day......
  10. I am a big fan of the Bushnell Elite. I have a Pro-Staff 3-9 on a .22 and it struggles in low light. I have used the Elite 3200 night hunting for Coyotes as well as edge of dark and it's just better, alot better. In the $200 range it's the best scope out there.
  11. Correction it looks like a very dead dog to me. Nice shooting!
  12. thanks for the help, never a bad idea to buy another gun, and I don't mean that sarcastically.
  13. NBT-Federal Personally I shoot Federal 150 Gr Nosler Ballistic Tips in my .308. There may be better bullets but I have not found any that will shoot better out of my Browning BAR Shot-trac. I have 5 boxes of bullets @ home with 5 missing out of each box inlcuding, Nosler Partitions, Remington Core-Locks, Hornandy SST, and those high dollar Winchesters. None of them shot the groups the Federals did SUB-MOA @ 100. The do really well on White-tails. I shoot the same bullets in my .270 (130gr), 30-06 (165gr), and 22-250 (50 gr) and they are extremely accurate in all of them. As a matter of fact every deer I have killed in the last 10 years has been shot with a Federal Nosler ballistic Tip bullet. My only complaint is that in the 22-250 they are too devastating for light skinned stuff like foxes, I am in search of a bullet that does less pelt damage when i varmint hunt.
  14. I am looking for a factory load for my 22-250 that does not skin and gut everything I shoot with it. I was thinking of trying the Federal TNT greens, I think it uses the Barnes Varmint grenade, any advice or experience would be appreciated. The exit wound on the last fox I shot was well let's just say not repairable.
  15. Scope Bass Pro has the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9 for $199. I think it is hands down the best scope you can buy for under $200. I own 2 of them and recommend them highly. The rainguard is really works and it seems to rain at least 80% of muzzle loader season in my neighborhood. Low light is excellent and you would have to spend a lot to do appreciably better. I will never buy another Luopold VX-II again after using the Bushnell 3200. The VX-III well that's a little different.
  16. Coon Dogs Getting into hunting with hounds is not something you should do forming an attachment to any breed or any dog. It is about bloodline and you are going to need to start with a running dog to train from that is not gonna be an A-level dog, because no one will part with an A-dog. Get you the best dogs you can find and then work to upgrade to what you want and raise your own or brred from someone elses stud dog. I got out of hounds for a long time then started back into beagles for rabbits about 8 years ago. It took me about 5 years to get a pack to the level I wanted and it takes constant maint, thier best years are form 3-7 and it is not a whole lot different when I used to mess with coon dogs and deer hounds. You have to keep starting them. Usually a hunter settles on a breed based history or local breeding and availability. Walkers, Redbones, and Blue ticks are all good dogs and all win trials. Walkers are the fastest and easiest to handle. Blues and Reds have colder noses and are more true to a track in my experience stubborn as **** though and can be real high strung. hope this helps
  17. 2cents For my 2 cents I think that the Encore is by far the best quality rifle as far as muzzle loaders go. I really don't think you have to shoot a 300-350 grain bullet for Elk, and you really don't for Mule Deer. I hunted Mule Deer last year in Utah, shot my normal 100 gr Pyrodex with Precision Rifle 250 gr bullet. It was not a problem at all.
  18. I think this is a pretty "silly" argument. There are a lot of people that will say one caliber is better than another. These same people walk out the door during bow season and muzzle loader season with weapons that are infinately inferior to a 30-30. We hunters are pretty spoiled now adays and a lot of us have a safe full of expensive scoped rifles in various calibers. Our Grand Fathers did not have a lot to choose form until bolt actions became prevelant in the 1940's and most of them were at war. Change took time to catch on and time for them ot be able to afford change, and for optics to catch up to the capability of rifles. 30 30's They still work, they still kill deer, they are still better than a muzzle loader or a slug gun, and some people prefer nostalgia to efficiency and modern technology. To each his own, I shoot a .257 Roberts, maybe a 25-06 is better, a .270 is better and I own one that I never shoot.
  19. As a former owner of a laminate stock remington 597 I was none too thrilled to send back my $500 rifle for a $250 coupon towards a new Remington firearm. I sent it off in December none the less and as of today still did not have me coupon. I made a call to Remington customer service and man they stepped up! They shipped out a brand new Marlin (now owned by Remington) Model 917VSF Laminate Stainless with fluted barrel in .17 hornandy to my local dealer (no charge), I should have it early next week. Evidently there was a lot of red tape with ATF to do any type of replacement and early on the coupons were the best that they could do. Thank you Remington, Signed; Happy Cusotmer
  20. the right shot size is the one that patterns best out of your gun.
  21. I have that exact same rifle in 22-250, they are shooters
  22. 870 I shoot a Remington 870 3" Mag Mossy Oak with 26" barrell. I also have a 21" turkey barrel it wears in the spring. The only complaint I have about this gun is that it is hard to keep my cheek down on the sight plane especially if have been shooting my other shotguns alot. It just mounts a little bit different than my other shotguns. I bought a Benelli M2 field a couple of years ago and i do not shoot the 870 near as much as i used to except for Turkey hunting.
  23. I don't think it hurts to keep the mags loaded, I have always heard it is best to load the mag to it's capacity and load the top rond in the chamber. If you are storing empty load the mag 1 down from capacity. It's supposed to be better for the springs.
  24. I hate safeties in front of the trigger guard. Other than that they look pretty cool.
