on the run Now this is gonna sound crazy to you guys out west but in Virginia we run deer with hounds. The area I hunt in allows both Rifles and shotguns. The "Dog Hunting" begins on the opening day of Fire Arms season. My point is I have shot a bunch of deer running both with a rifle and buckshot. I am not gonna say I killed em' all, but I will say I have killed my fair share. When you shoot em' with a rifle running 9 out of 10 times if you hit the deer he will go down, you may need to follow up on that deer with another shot though. The mistake most people make is not leading the deer or shooting too high. insid e100 yds aim at his nose, 100-150 aim 5 ft in front, don't shoot at deer running over 150 yds. AIM LOW and shoot on the down bounce you have to pace them out.

Favorite Muzzleloader Bullet for Whitetails?
Grady269 replied to Double Drops's topic in Bluelk's Muzzleloader Room
Precision Rifle I switched over this year while sighting in from the Barnes Expander MZ to the Precision Rifle 260gr. I have to say I love these bullets they are by far the most consistant I have ever shot out of my Encore. I have killed (2) deer with them so far (1) Doe and (1) 9 pt buck. The buck was a 170 yd shot and he dropped in his tracks. They load very easy compared to the Barnes Bullets as well. I am not knocking Barnes they make an excellent round and served me well for years and the Barnes is a much harder bullet. The PR's are hard to find in the store as well. -
I keep a sharp knife and 4 trash bags in my pack for just those occasions.

I am in the dead on @ 100 yds for my everyday deer hunting rifle. Here is the reason: I cannot say that I have ever shot under a deer. I cannot remember ever taking a shot over 200 yds @ a deer, because I am not willing to tote a rifles that is that big or has a sope with that much magnification around all day. When a nice buck comes in it is hard as **** to remember to aim low, most times you will put the cross hair on him and shoot. My .257 Roberts hits about 4" low @ 200 yds, that's cool with me. Folks in the West may feel much diferently.

Virginia allows use of smokeless powder in "Rifles Designed for it" but is must load from the muzzle. Savage makes a rifle "designed for smokeless". I know several people that have them and they are very satisfied. Still uses a 209 primer; just does not have the same cleaning requirements. Savage has very specific loads that they highly recommend that you adhere to though. They must be weighed on an electronic scale as well.

Breaking both shoulders satisfies me, gonna run a real world test in the morning when the VA muzzle-loader season opens.

THAT IS A b-YOUTIFUL BUCK! Can you tell me: -Where did the bullet hit him -Did it go all the way through -Did you recover the bullet -How would rate the terminal performance

I shot some 250gr Precision rifle bullets out of my Encore this weekend and I was blown away by the accuracy of them, same hole type accuracy. I am "very" skeptical about changing bullets, have had really good luck with the Barnes Expander MZ's that I have been shooting. Has anyone had any experience with the performance of the Precision Rifle bulllets on deer? They are all lead and just look "soft". Any feedback would be appreciated. The PR's shoot fantastic, but I know I can count on the Barnes to break both shoulders and come out the other side.

Precision Rifle I have been very dedicated to Barnes MZ bullets. This weekend I took out the Encore and did a quick check before the season starts. I had some Precision Rifle Bullets 250Gr that I thought I would give a try as well. WOW! First (2) went through the same hole @ 100 yds. I tried it again and all 4 shots were @ minimum touching the same original hole @ 100 yds. I have shot a bunch of muzzle loader bullets; none of them shot anything like this.

Winchester SuperX Power-Point vs. Pointed Soft Point

Try shooting a 3 shot group of whatever you shoot from a "COLD" barrel. See which one groups best. I bought an H&R Handi-Rifle for my son in .243. Grouped great with Remington Core-Lokts; but the more I shot (barrel heated) the worse the groups got. From a cold barrel it will shoot a 1.5" group, from a "warm-hot' barrrel, not close to that. Try a brand, wait a half hour then try another get your best group. Then zero her down. I try not to shoot more than 6 shots then wait a half hour-hour before trying again. -

T/C Encore "Original" 50cal. 100 gr Pyrodex Pellets and 250 Gr barnes Expander MZ It makes "BIG" Holes:gun2:
-
Try Pyrodex VS 777, you may see a big difference there as well. I like old "Dirty" Pyrodex
-
See if you can find a Knight Wolverine used somewhere. They make excellent your guns. 75-80 gr of Pyrodex

Yeh, I was just dissapointed, and in major denial that is could be a scope problem. I questioned my hand loads, bought factory loads, replaced the scope mounts and I cussed Kimber. Really like the scope, it is very clear and "really" good in low light. It's going back Monday and I am sure they will stand behind it.

Is there an affordable pistol out there
Grady269 replied to RangerClay's topic in Hand Guns & Accessories
shotgun I would secon the shotgun, but my recommendation would be a .20gauge 870. -
I was wondering what experience anyone has had with Zeiss scopes? I have a new rifle Kimber .257 that I have been having big time trouble with related to accuracy. After numerous attempts to get it shooting respectable groups I finally relented to the last item on the rifle that I could fix without a gunsmith; the Zeiss 3x9x40mm scope. I took it off the rifle and put a Leupold from one of my other rifles on it. Amazing! the first group I shot covered with a quarter; so did the next (2) and it did the same the next day. It seems like a scope problem which was the last thing I expected. I could never get the rifle to zero with the Zeiss it would start wandering all ove rthe place. I could shoot (2) rounds close and then the next (2) would be 6-8 inches off from each other.

.308 I went through about 10 different boxes of ammo trying to get my Browning Short-trac .308 to hold a group i could brag about. Also about $300 in barrel re-crown, trigger, and action work. With that said the best "shooting" of all of them was the Hornandy Light magnum 165 Boat Tail Soft Point 165Gr. 1.5" 5 shot group @ 100 yds. Second Best was the Black Hills Gold 165gr TSX. The Hornandy are a little hotter and I was having problems with the bolt closing solid sometimes; this has not happened with the Hornandy load. The 165 Gr seems to be the trick for me, Most of the competition loads are also 165-168.

The only ones i can think of factory chambered for .257 Roberts are the 700 special edition, Ruger 77 hawkeye, and Kimber 8400. I know a couple of folks that have the Ruger and are happy with them. Weatherby $399 for .257 Mag.

Tried em- did not like them. Went back to Remington Heavy Steel. Cheaper and I kill more birds with it.

Favorite Muzzleloader Bullet for Whitetails?
Grady269 replied to Double Drops's topic in Bluelk's Muzzleloader Room
Barnes Expander MZ 250 grain. They shoot way better than they look and kill deer dead as a hammer. -
.257 I have a Remington M-700 Mountain Rifle in .257, It is my all-time favorite rifle. Hard to find rifles in .257 now adays, Remington has thir anual special edition CDL out this year in .257, should be a very sweet rifle. If you don't reload Hornandy makes an SST and Federal makes a Nosler Partition that are pretty more than decent.
