  1. I live in Wi, What City was this Gander Mountain in?
  2. If you can only afford a used bow, get it from someone you trust, and also try to take it to a bow shop to have it checked out before you actually buy it. for what you can get a good new starter bow for, you wont be saving much by buying used.
  3. I completely agree, I bought a used bow for my first one, and thats exactly what happened, the limbs were bad and the string was bad, and the rest was wore out, I got for $250 and it was a waste of money. I definitely would get something brand new that will be under warranty for a while if something goes bad.
  4. " buy the best you can afford" Thats what I was trying to get at it, it just took me a whole paragraph to say it and then was probably confusing anyway
  5. This makes sense, but I have to disagree with you based on experience. If I had $1000 I would definitely spend at least $800 on the bow. When you buy a cheap used bow you run the risk of getting a bow that needs a lot of work before it even functions. I bought a used bow for my first one and it was a waste of money, the limbs were bad and it needed a new string. When you get something like that you spend all kinds of time trying to sight it in, money on stuff to fix it, and all kinds of head aches to deal with. What I have found with bowhunting is you get what you pay for. If you go to a good archery shop where they can set you up with a proper fitting bow and tell you the basics of sighting it in, its easy to do yourself, you dont need lessons. With that being said I wouldnt go out and buy the most expensive bow for my first one, you could probably get a good set-up for around $350. Even though i'm saying that i wouldnt get the most expensive bow out there, after you've experienced bow-hunting and you become hooked you'll wished you had the best bow out there. Also one more tip, don't skimp on your arrows, they can make shooting a disaster or they can make shooting a breeze. Good luck and get to the archery shop and start shooting some different bows.
  6. go to a good archery shop so they can measure you and set you up with the proper bow. my suggestion would be to not spend a lot of money if your just starting, but at the same time dont by a bunch of crap that will just end up making things harder and less exciting. There are plenty of good bow packages out there so you should be able to easily find something. Also 70 lbs draw weight is probably way to much, you should be able to draw a bow back while sitting down with your feet off the ground. Good luck and welcome to the greatest type of hunting out there
  7. I have the hunter model and it works perfectly for me, I dont know if the pro is any better, but a lot of times with archery products you get what you pay for, so it may be better, I'm sure it has some advantages over the hunter, but the hunter works great as well
  8. definitly QAD, I had similar problems as you have with my arrow coming off the rest, I switched to a QAD last year and drilled a buck at 40yds. It gives you a little more confidence as well knowing your arrow isnt going to fall off mid-draw. and oh yea they are easy to set-up as well. good luck
  9. I was hoping to keep it around $200. Reconyx and cuddeback are the 2 that most people seem to have success with
  10. I've been thinking about getting a new trail camera, but there are so many out there and so many brands. The two most important things for me are trigger speed and infrared. Price is also important meaning i'm not gonna buy a cheap piece of crap and i'm also not gonna buy something that shoots deer for me. I was hoping people would rate brands (1 being the highest) and let me know what your top choices would be. I'm also guessing there has been a thread like this before but I didnt have much luck finding any. Thanks!
  11. I have a Mossberg 500 20ga with a rifled slug barrel and a scope on it. I shoot the Winchester supreme sabots (1900 fps). Shooting deer 50-60 yds is no problem, my longest shot was 130 yds, aimed at the top of the back and made a perfect shot. I would really recommend a 20ga over a 12ga because in my opinion they are more accurate and you can shoot farther, same concept as a rifle, its a smaller projectile and there is less drag. Hope this helps..good luck
  12. I usually don't go out for late season bow, never had any luck anyway. I don't about where you hunt, but where I hunt there is now a muzzle-loader season until the 8th then on the 9th through 14th there is a doe only gun season, and then the 24th through january 9th there is another earn-a-buck season, so pretty much if I were to go bowhunting i'd be wearing blaze orange anyway.
  13. Under Armour all the way. the Cold gear is light weight but very warm. They also have a new camo jacket and pants its called the ridge reaper, I haven't checked it out yet because i can't afford it anyway, but it has good reviews, will probably be my next clothing purchase though.
  14. The DNR will most likely way over exaggerate this. I was told at a deer registration site that the DNR plans to do the cwd eradication effort for at least 5 more years. It's bad news and deer hunting as we have all grown up to know it will be ruined by the WI DNR
  15. I've never had luck with Remington sabot slugs or the Hornadays. I would recommend the Winchester Supreme Platinum Gold. I've seen 3 inchers at farm and fleet but they are hard to find, the 2 3/4 are much easier to get, good luck
  16. the warm weather this week couldn't have come at a worse time, the bucks were moving good, but things have really slowed down now
  17. Its hard for people to admit they didn't make the best shot, and I think sometimes people are telling them selves they made a better shot then what they actually did because it makes them feel better. I've only ever had one deer that I followed blood on and never found the deer (knock on wood) but i wasnt confident on the shot at all and came to the conclusion that i had shot under the deer and knicked it enough for some blood. Sometimes people do need to put more effort into tracking, it is their responsibility to find that wounded or dead animal. don't let it get to ya too much
  18. yea I forgot to take a couple pictures until we had it skinned and it was hanging.
  19. Got a good deer last night. The rack isnt the biggest and its not the deer I was hunting for, but he had a big body and the freezer was getting low. I made a pretty terrible shot and hit him pretty far back. It was a 40yd shot which is the longest i've ever taken, but I did practice all summer at that distance. He only went about 100yds and I had to drag him about 100yds, but I was so tired by the time I got him to the truck I had to call a buddy to help me get him in the truck. This is the biggest buck I've shot and only the 2nd buck i've taken with a bow. Overall i'm happy with him, now I gotta shoot another doe so I can get another buck tag and get back on the big guy.
  20. Yea I can't wait for this wind to stop, its unreal. I'm planning on hitting the stand friday afternoon, and i'm gonna try to hunt all day Sat. Unfortunately the buck that i'm after showed up on my camera last thursday at about 6:10 pm, and I had decided to go to the last Varsity football game of the year so i wasn't in the stand. Hopefully if the wind stops I can check the camera again on Friday when i head to the stand (there will prolly be hundreds of pictures due to the wind moving branches and setting off the camera).
  21. I saw a show the other day where guys were aging bucks and one of the things they talked about was the belly. The younger the deer the straighter the belly, and the older the deer the more of a belly there is. It looks fairly straight to me so i'd go with 3.5
  22. I've got a cedar tree about 40 yds from my stand that has a large scrape underneath it. The scrape is there year after year and for the last 3 or 4 years i've had my stand in that area. Every year I put my camera up on that tree so I know what is around. In July I got pictures of two really nice bucks walking during the day. The past month I have gotten pics of a really nice buck that I hope to get a chance at, the PROBLEM is all the bucks seem to be only moving at night, except for a small 6 point. Up until about 2 weeks I had several does coming out regularly (every evening) and now even they seem to be only moving at night. The weather has cooled down and I would think that the pre-rut would be starting here in Wi pretty soon. Any Ideas as to why they have started only moving at night? I did bump the does one evening about a week and half ago, but it had gotten kinda warm and there was a gun season going on so I didn't hunt that area at all? I keep telling myself to just be patient, but its a month into the season and the only buck i've seen while out hunting was a spike so i'm getting kinda frustrated.
  23. I had one similar to that last year, It was a nice 9 pt but he was about 55 yds out ( to long for me to be comfortable with a bow) and in some brush. If it woulda been gun season he woulda been down
  24. I use Muzzy mx-4's (4 blade) Both the deer last year that I got had great blood trails, the doe only went about 25 yds and dropped, the buck went about 80 yds but I had excellent blood all the way to him.
  25. Just wanted to remind all the bowhunters in Wi that this coming weekend is the youth gun hunt so if your gonna go out make sure your wearing your blaze orange. It is especially important this year since kids of the ages 10 and 11 can hunt now without having taken and passed hunter safety. You can all prolly tell what my opinion is on this issue, but make sure you wear your orange and are extra safe if you hit the woods. and Good luck
