Mojave Desert Camping-Hunting Survival Foods and other Good Stuff. I find for myself, that everything I take camping-hunting with me would be considered for survival purposes. It's just the way it is for myself and will remain so. I eat good all week long when at home and going camping will give me the opportunity to shed a few pounds. I hunt and camp as a loner, my SUV is my base camp. From here I can put anything I need into my packboard and hike to another destination with enough food and water to last two or three nights out. One important item I will leave in my vehicle is my 12 gauge shotgun with buckshot, slugs and most importantly, 12 gauge flares. I will shoulder a handgun and carry either my .223 or .243 (depending on altitude and distance) for hunting coyote and bobcat. Also, I belt a good quality 5" fixed blade knife. Other items such as a military type compass and flashlight or lantern which are hand-cranks. I've made the mistake of purchasing some survival foods off the internet at inflated prices which were not filling and tasted terrible. I prepare my own foods such as things I'm already famaliar with and like such as stove-top, rice-a-roni, oatmeat cereal, and 4 ounce tin of Spam (4oz Spam may not always be available). I take the contents out of the box and pour them into plastic bags for what I will require for two to three days out. Ever gone camping and run out of food and worse yet, you've still got a few more days left to remain in the desert. During the second day your really getting hungry and you start dreaming how a big turkey dinner would taste about now. On the third day your starved. So much for that turkey dinner, it's now time to get real! Now you start thinking about that Mojave rattler you saw a few days ago or that Lizard sunning himself on the rocks and start thinking that this would make a pretty good meal. Believe me... if you are really hungry, you will eat the rattler and the lizard. You must take precautions with the rattler and especially the Mojave (green) rattler which is one of the most venomous snakes in North America. You must catch him in a out-stretcher position (not coiled), pin his head down with a probe and cut his head off. Just because you dismembered the head dosen't mean he is totally dead and cannot see! Don't reach down to pick up the head with your hand. He still has enough energy to lay one venomous bite on you if your hand pass's within inches of him. Both snake and lizard have a real gammie flavor and especially the snake. The lizard meat will appear to be a little more tender and chew something like chicken. I usually salt both types of meat which is a natural tenderizer and cook it over the fire on a skewer. When they are fully roasted I will pour soy sauce on them and have my meal. Once you've had snake and lizard you won't think twice about eating it again under hungry or starving conditions. After all... remember the first time you had to kiss your mother-in-law! Whoops... lets not go there! Bon Appetit! Snake head, still alive.

I agree with you Mathews XT man. I pray the same way. My prayers are directed to God in Jesus name and as you mentioned I will use my Holy Spirit as my guide, especially when composing new prayers.

The Father, The Son, or The Holy Spirit. The Trinity is certainly a difficult concept for anyone to understand, It is a mystery how God can be one God in three persons, so the best we can do is accept what the Bible says about God's nature, even if we don't fully comprehend. To which person of the Trinity should we pray? Certainly, there is no question that we can pray to God the Father. The Old and New Testaments are filled with examples of prayer to the Father, and Jesus Himself taught us to pray to the Father in Matthew 6:9-13. There is no question that we can pray to Jesus. As an example, in Acts 7:59, Stephen prays "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Jesus told us that we would be able to pray to Him after he had gone to the Father, He said, "...I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." (John 14:12-14) Having said that, the Holy Spirit does play a special role in interceding for us when we are praying to the Father or to the Son. Many times in the New Testament we are told to pray "in the Spirit." In Ephesians 6:18, Paul tells us "...pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests", while Jude recommends, "...Build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit." (Jude 1:20) The issues with the Holy Spirit is more complicated. There are no examples of anyone praying to the Holy Spirit in the scripture, nor is there any guidance that we should or should not do. As a person of the Trinity and one who is fully God, there is no obvious reason why we should not pray to the Holy Spirit if we are led to do so. For me personally, I pray to the Holy Spirit whenever I feel stress or unease and I am seeking peace and comfort. I am not sure why I do this, but it seems appropiate. Paul gives us some clarification about the role of the Holy Spirit in Romans 8:26. Paul writes, "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express." So, although it is perfectly acceptable to pray to the Holy Spirit, scripture suggests that we pray "in the Spirit", which means we permit the Holy Spirit to guide our prayer and give us the right words to say. There is no right or wrong. You may address your prayer to the Son, the Father or the Holy Spirit with confidence depending on how you feel at that moment. Thank you both for your observations and your very correct. Because political correctness is taught in schools and political correctness teaches a person to value their own feel-good feelings and atitude over anyone or anything eles including God. We have taken the 'Word of God' out of our schools, along with Christmas and any Christian songs that make reference to God. It's just mind boggling how our society has so drastically changed in just few years. If you or I were to take the Koran and put it in a toilet and photograph it, we would be immediately imprisoned for a hate crime. If you put the Bible in the toilet and photograph it, then it would be considered art! I know somebody upstairs is taking this all in and I feel to my bare bones his wrath is with us now.

Excellent observation wtnghunt, all the drugs listed in this article would give anyone sucidal thoughts whether you are sane or insane. We are the most medication prescribed nation in the history of the world! For example; I'm retired and belong to an HMO (not by choice), and the HMO's love to prescribe medication to their seniors, whether you need them or not, and of course they will call it preventative medicine! Before joining an HMO I was taking no prescriptions for any reason. After joining the HMO I soon found myself with six different prescriptions and I wasn't feeling any better, in fact I was feeling worse. I stopped taking the prescriptions and felt 100% better. Doctors, hospitals, and HMO's love to give their patients prescription medications. Why, because they get some major financial kickbacks from the pharmaceutical companies and especially on the mind-altering drugs which are expensive to begin with. And our FDA is sitting on their hands and just might be receiving financial kickbacks from the pharmaceutical companies also. In an upside down world whereby to be good is bad and to be bad is now good, it wouldn't suprise me.

Knowing the consequences of sin is essential to direct us on a spiritual path to our Heavenly Father, along with a good healthy fear of our Lord. We just don't seem to get it at times that we can't have our way and God's way together. God is always right, and His ways and commandments for us on how to live. Jesus himself could not have said it any better when he 'says that we should not fear man or what man can do to us, but to fear God the Father who has the power to render everlasting judgement and punishment', Knowing this is enough to make anyone's skin crawl and hair stand on end!

How can it be that today's society fails to understand that many of man's problems are a result of sin. Isn't it a little distressing to hear people discuss the issue of morality in depth without any mention of the word sin? The basic cause in many instances is a person's unwillingness to take responsibility for his own actions, but rather blame on someone - or something eles! The refusal to confront sin only compounds the problem. Some health officials, in explaining their AIDS program, go to great lengths promoting condoms, as well as sexual abstinence. Then they usually add: "THIS IS NOT A MORAL ISSUE." YIKES!! Of course it's a moral issue! Several decades ago, George W Corrnell of the Associated Press wrote a column titled 'Word Sin Disappears But Remains A Fact.' "He says the realities of personal guilt and sin have been glossed over as symptoms of emotional illness or enviromental conditioning for which the individual is not considered responsible!" A leading psychiatrist noted that 90% of the mentally ill could be immediately well if they were able to forgive themselves and others and to receive forgiveness! The Bible states emphatically: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9) And "But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). CONSIDER THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN: Have you ever decided to sin and thought, "I don't care about the consequences. Many people who have allowed themselves to be carried away by temptation, thinking they didn't care what happened, only to discover that they really did care when they faced devasting consequences. Realistically considering the consequences of our actions can help us make the right choices. It helps to consider the consequences of not sinning as well as considering the consequences of sinning. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-8 CONSIDER THE CONSEQUENCES OF HOLINESS: It's encouraging to realize that just as there are consequences to sin, there are consequences when we choose righteousness. We must train ourselves not to be tempted. Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers righteousness on you. Hosea 10:12 YOU PLEASE GOD: Each time you say "yes" to God, he is pleased, much as an earthly parent takes pleasure in his or her child's obedience. YOU GROW IN THE SPIRIT: When you are tempted, it is an opportunity to grow in the Spirit. It's exciting to see the power of God working in your life as you say "yes" to God and "no" to sin. YOU BUILD RESISTANCE TO FURTHER SIN: When you overcome temptation, you learn that you have the strength to say, "No." That makes it easier to say "no" the next time. YOU ARE A GOOD EXAMPLE TO OTHERS: When you obey God, you provide a great example and encouragement to others. YOU EXPERIENCE JOY: When you obey God and break free from the power of sin, you experience the excitment and joy that come from spiritual victory. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy be in you and that your joy may be complete. John 15:10-11 Reference: God's Magnificent Creation, Christian Outdoors Forum

Thank you for your thoughts Mathews XT Man. Yes the drugging must stop. However, if we are devoted Christians pursueing a spiritual life, and following the righteous path that God has given us, would these problems have ever developed in the first place? Again and again we have replaced the 'Word of God' with the word of the flesh. Parents have entrusted their children into the hands of doctors, educators, and pharmaceutical companies. My own observation is that parents are no longer parenting and have entrusted others to govern their lives and the lives of their children. This is when bad things begin to happen. Enter Satan!

*Kip Kindel was withdrawing from Prozac and had been prescribed Ritlin when he murdered his mother and stepfather then shot 22 classmates, killing two in 1998. *Christopher Pittman was withdrawing from Luvox and from Paxil when he killed his grandparents in 2001. *Elizabeth Bush, who fired at fellow students in Williamsport, PA., in 2001, wounding one, was on prozac. *Jason Hoffman, was on Effexor and Celexa when he opened fire at his El Cajon, CA., high school, wounding five. *Shawn Cooper, on antidepresents, wounded six at his Conyers, GA., high school. *Eric Harris, on antidepresents, wounded six at his Conyers, GA., high school. *Eric Haris was taking Luvox when he and fellow student Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 24 others before turning their guns on themselves at Columbine high school in Colorado. *At Virginia Tech in 2007, where 32 were murdered, authorities found "prescription medications related to the treatment of Psychological problems had been found among Mr. Cho's effects, "according to the New Yorki Times. ADAM LANZA. In mass shootings involving guns and mind-altering medications, politicians immediately seek to blame guns but never the medication. Nearly every mass shooting that has taken place in America over the last two decades has a link to psychiatric medication, and it appears the recent tragic event is headed in the same direction. According to ABC News, Adam Lanza, the alleged shooter, has been labeled as having "mental illness" and a "personality disorder." These are precisely the words typically heard in a person who is being "treated" with mind-altering drugs. One of the most common side effects of psychiatric drugs is violent outbursts and thoughts of suicide! WE SHOULD BE OUTLAWING PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS, NOT A PIECE OF METAL? Medications that cause violent and suicidal behavior. After all, if you only outlaw guns but fail to eliminate the drugs that cause the violence, people dosed up on mind-altering meds will simply find alternate weapons to commit the same acts of violence. You don't think a crazy guy with a sword can hack up 20 or 30 kids in a school? A sword, a knife or even a pick axe can be just as deadloy as a firearm. Wouldn't you agree that any rational and reasonably intelligent person would come to the same conclusion! Makes you kinda wonder dosen't it... what kind of psychiatric medications are in the delutional gun grabbing politicians medicine cabinet!

Here's some pictures of the early Ford (modified) racing cars. It sure is interesting how we Americans developed a passion for auto racing. I believe our most popular sport is NASCAR. http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z9258/Ford-Model-T-Racer.aspx -

1. Bertha Belch, a missionary from Africa, will be speaking tonight at Calvary Methodist. Come and hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa. 2. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. 3. Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of all those things not worth keeping around the house. Don't forget to bring your husbands. 4. The Rector will preach his farewell message after which the choir will sing; "Break Forth Into Joy." 5. Don't let worry kill you - let the church help. 6. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community. 7. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. 8. The rosebud on the alter this morning is to announce the birth of David Alan Belzer, the sin of Rev and Mrs Julius Belzer. 9. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be "What is He!!?" Come early and listen to the choir practice. 10. The Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles, and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to criple children. This goes to show you that were all pretty frail human beings. God didn't bring us into the world as perfect individuals. He gave us a road to follow and that road has a map called the Bible. He has given us many obstacles to overcome in our journey towards spiritual growth, and all he asks in return is our devotion. He has given us the ability to laugh and cry and has given us a sense of humor and above all, being able to laugh at ourselves.

Thank you. Good points and explanation and a good reason to reload.

Until recently the 25-06 was classified as a wildcat for the primary reason it was a barrel burner. With the introduction of slow burning powders this caliber will have a normal shelf life. With a 30-06 case and a .257 ball this caliber has a lot of inherent velocity and what you need to do is to harness this velocity with a slower powder burn rate and at least a 110 grain bullet. I believe H4350 was mentioned, which I use and H4831. I have a 25-06 that I use in long range (600 yds) benchrest. This caliber is currently used in 1000 yard benchrest competition and can be accurate at this distance. However, with a .257, ball you'll need a good hair day (no wind) to be competitive. Nice hearing from you and welcome to the forum.

List the type of powder and powder charge on their box's? Why, because more different calibers are being made available to the general hunting and shooting public. And this is a good thing. My rant is that some of these wildcat calibers have been considered barrel burners in the past, but with the advent of slower burn powders they can expect to have a normal life expectancy. But there is no mention of the powder or charge on the boxed ammo. However, some do list the bullet weight. Can anyone chime in and give a reasonable explanation regarding the powder and charge reference. The only thing I can think of is that the ammo is produced in lots. If you purchase ammo with a lot number of 12345 and go back a month later and purchase another box of ammo and it has a lot number of 67890, could this indicate that there may be a slight powder change or powder blend? Those of you who may be new to firearms, ammo or reloading should aquaint yourself with SAAMI. Everything to do with firearms, bullet, powder and a whole lot more are based on SAAMI specifications. http://saami.org Ammo manufacturers along with reloaders have specific guidelines developed by SAAMI which we follow and are found in your reload manual. We have a minimum and maximum powder charge which must abide for your chosen bullet weight. One of the most important, overlooked and critical considerations besides a powder-bullet recipe is pressure. If your new to this topic, here's a couple of examples you should be aware of. Let's take a simple example. Cartridge: 40 S&W Load Type: Pistol Bullet Weight: 135 GR. Nos JHP Maximum Charge: 7.5 Vel (ft/s): 1324 Pressure: 32,500 PSI (I'm not going to list all the different bullet weights in between these two illustrations). Bullet Weight: 200 GR. Hdy XTP Maximum Charge: 4.7 Vel (ft/s): 903 Pressure: 33,600 PSI What you see is that when the bullet weight increases, the powder charge decreases. When the bullet weight increases the velocity decreases and the pressure increases. This is all about keeping the chamber pressure at a safe level. The powder charge will always be typically lighter for a heavier bullet. Simply stated, a heavier bullet can cause more harm at a lower velocity. The difference is in the momentum or inertia, or kinetic energy, however you want to phrase it, heavier can carry more energy. If you are near the maximum safe pressure with a 165 grain bullet and use the same amount of powder to push a 180 grain bullet, the higher chamber pressure could very well be over the maximum safe pressure and cause catastrophic failure.

For general yote hunting I use a .223 Savage 1:9 twist and reload a 75 grain Swift Sirroco. If I go to higher elevations I'll go to a .243. Most desert yotes are small and weigh in between 35 to 40 pounds. One shot one kill.

"In a civilized and cultured country, wild animals only continue to exist at all when preserved by sportsmen. The excellent people who protest against all hunting and consider sportsmen as enemies of wildlife are ignorant of the fact in reality the genuine sportsman is by all odds the most important factor in keeping the larger and more valuable wild creatures from total extermination." -Theodore Roosevelt- Do you think we would have our hunting legacy like we have without Theodore Roosevelt? Do you think we would have the same hunting rights now without Theodore Roosevely? One man and one man only gave us this privilege, Theodore Roosevelt! Come back to us President Roosevelt, our country needs you now. Amen

Thanks for your post and I would be in agreement with you. The study of exterior ballistics is an ever on going study. I recall that some of the hunters up in Western Washington state were reloading with 30-30 rounds for their 30-06 which is a more bull nose bullet and had excellent results. I wouldn't, because it's to great a distance from the bullet ogive to the lands and could eventually create throat or chamber erosion. A lot of what were hearing about from the ammo manufacturers is a lot of hype regarding high velocity. Ammo manufacturere are approved and regulated by SAAMI, and in producing ammo these company's always take a conservative view, which they have to do in considering the liability of what there selling over the counter.

This is a duel between two nasty critters. This video was taken in my back yard (Mojave Desert). And it appears it was shot on or near the Mojave Road (off-road) probably around 60 miles north-east of Barstow, CA. The Mojave rattler is one of the most poisonous snakes found in North America. In some 40 years of hunting, camping and photographing the desert, I've had to kill about 6 of these rattlers, and that was in self defense. This rattler is aggressive and does not back down. I always shoulder a hand-gun for such eventualities. If you have a cat or been around cats you know how fast their paws or arm movement can be, and how fast they can extend and contract their claws. It would appear in the video that the cat is pawing the snake, but his claws are extended and he's raking that snake and doing significant damage. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f1a_1173344626

The term 'high velocity' has been around for about 75 years, and has largely been misinterpereted to it's application. I grew up in Western Washington State and as a kid I would go hunting black-tail deer with my 30-30 Marlin. This is an ideal caliber for hunting in a forest type areas with lots of tree growth and all kinds of foilage. I usually found the average shooting distance to my game would be between 50 to 100 yards. I would say the 30-30 is very effective up to 200 yards as the bullet drop is substantial for anything beyond. And the 30-30 caliber is a slow moving bullet at that distance and does substantial damage to the game and will seldom exit. I had the opportunity to go hunting with a friend who had a 30-06 and told me he had some new high velocity ammo. His turn came to take a shot at a blacktail and hit the animal, but the deer kept on going and ran off. Obviously he didn't hit vitals and that bullet probably exited at the same speed it entered! I learned then that velocity is an important factor in hunting but it's application is for longer range hunting. Hunting at around 400 to 500 yards it is a consideration. Hunting from 600 to a 1000 yards it becomes a major consideration. The FPS at 1000 yards for a 30 caliber ball will be less that 1600 FPS. Oddly enough thats about the same FPS as a 30-30 would be at 100 yards. Does the high velocity bullet shoot flatter? It may, but I've seen no evidence that it does. I reload 3 calibers for benchrest competion and target bullets do shoot flatter than hunting Ammo. If your a reloader, your ahead of the game whether for target or hunting. With factory ammo your at the mercy of the manufacturer regarding powder selection and charge. The bullet drop in factory loads is substantial compared to your own hand loads. If velocity is what you require then your own hand loads and developing your own powder-bullet recipe is always the ultimate solution. Here's a good article by a pretty respected firearm writer. 'Is High Velocity a Myth?' Trajectory, Meat Damage, and Knock-Down. By Eben Brown There are two areas of modern rifle opinion that I think are not correct. 1. That extra high velocity rifle cartridges are necessarily so much flatter shooting than medium velocity cartridges... the myth of the so-called '500 yard cartridge' and... 2. That high velocity and energy are necessarily desirable at knocking down game... they aren't. What follows is an argument in favor of using medium velocity and heavy bullets for hunting... we're going to look at the realities of bullet trajectory relative to velocity; Meat damage in relation to excessive energy; And Sectional Density as it related to the killing power of a cartridge on big game. Octopus Verses Shark. No Contest You Say? My wife is Japanese so we've eaten plenty of octopus on different occasions. And I'm not really that fond of it, but from scientific point of view they are a most interesting critter. Being an invertebrate, they have no bone structure at all. After watching this video, I was wondering what kind of digestive system they had. Their digestive system begins with a parrot like beak and inside the beak is the Radula, which is the tongue like structure covered with rows of teeth for digging, drilling and scraping food from substrates. The brain, sense organs, and central nervous system are among the most highly developed of the invertebrates. Their eyes have a monocular vision as both eyes can see just about 360 degree's.
