* IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!!
maytom replied to KYLimbHanger's topic in Turkey Hunting
Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! Rossberg, I guess this pattern aint what you wanted to see. Yep, that's Nitro hevishot, all 316 pellets inside that 10" circle at 38 yards. So by your post stating that pellet count is what matters at extended range, I guess this combo is a keeper. -
Re: Cost of Heavy Shot Truthfully, I don't really care what you guys use to kill your birds with. I've seen this "Anti-hevishot" talk on many forums now, and I get a kick out of all the negativity this shot gets. When you guys can get 316 pellets inside a 10" circle at 38 yards, let's talk. Other than that, this is my last post on the topic of hevishot. I know it works, and it works very well indeed!! Nuff said, so save your opinions on how well your "standard lead shot" shoots.

Re: * IMPORTANT: All HEVI SHOT shooters read (pic)!!!! Ronin is 100% correct, hevishot is formed like that because it is way hotter when being made than lead, and can't be used in a drop tower like conventional lead pellets are made. They would need a tower a few thousand feet tall so the shot could cool down before landing in a water tank below!! That's why the shot looks the way it does. Either way, it doesn't harm your barrel or choke, and as far as patterns go, they sure out do the lead shot by a long shot!!! I wouldn't worry about the looks at all!! -
Re: Cost of Heavy Shot Snapper, the Hevisot is softer than steel, so it compresses once it goes through the choke tube. Strut10 said that the actual shot comes in contact with the inside of the barrel, which is 100% false!!! I have read where companies that make hevishot loads, mention the fact right on their web-sites, that the stuff will compress through the choke tubes. Tru-Glo mentioned that at best, it might leave a black mark from the wad as it passes through. No mention what so ever about damaging the barrel or choke tube???? I also inclined to believe that all this talk is just speculation on some peoples part. Think about this for a second or two. Do you really think that they would actualy make loads that damage your barrel, choke tubes, or gun, and leave themselves open for lawsuits and damage claims????? I think not.

Re: Anyone know.....Rhinos # I'm sorry, but Nitro does sell Rhino coke tubes as well. Here's the new Rhino web-site addy!! http://www.rhinochokes.com/main.htm

Re: Cost of Heavy Shot Not to dispute you here, but it's impossible for the actual shot to come out of the shot cup before the whole works is out the end of the barrel. In a split second the entire wad, and shot are gone and are quite a ways down range in a second's time. Think about that. I realize that your not a hevishot user and have your own concerns, and that's fine. But, I've been there and done that comparing thing, and until something comes along to impress the heck out of me as this Nitro/Rhino does, I'm a happy camper.

how many people shot heavishot with a lead. choke?
maytom replied to Addct2hntng's topic in Turkey Hunting
Re: how many people shot heavishot with a lead. choke? Before going with a Rhino choke and Nitro loads, I was shooting a Tru-Glo choke and Winchester supreme's. When Remington first came out with their hevishot loads a few years ago, I bought a box of 3" 1 1/2oz of #5 hevishot loads and tried them out of my Tru-Glo choke tube. To be honest, they actually patterned better than the Winchester load that I was using at that time. But, the pattern still wasn't what I wanted at the 40 yard marker. Hence my switch to the Rhino/Nitro combo. -
Re: Cost of Heavy Shot Strut, I hear your concerns about barrel wear. BUT!! The shot cup that holds the shot stays with the shot until after it leaves the barrel, and doesn't separate until quite a distance down range. The actual shot doesn't even come in contact with the barrel. I don't see where you'd think it would cause barrel wear from????

Re: Couple turkey pics... Hey strut, that looks like the weather that we have at my house!! Great pic's!!! Come on May 1st!!!

Re: 1187 spst pattern pic Impessive 30 yard and 50 yard patterns!!! I really think that a custom choke might do better, but that's up to you to decide if you want to spend some extra money to find out. I really love that style of the Remington 11-87!!! I've seen that listed in their catalog, but never in any sporting good stores??? Just curious, where did you end up buying yours at?

Re: Cost of Heavy Shot For me, yes, it's worth the extra cost. I have never seen such an awesome pattern out of my gun. I'm a huge Nitro/Rhino fan. To each his own, but I have found the Holy Grail as far as turkey choke/loads go with my combo reguardless of price.

Re: Custom Guns Impressive piece of hardware!!

Re: Patterning Question? I agree, that sounds like a fine pattern to me as well!!

Re: How fast does a turkeys beard grow? From what I've read on it, they claim a turkey's beard will grow up to 5" per year!! Problem is as they are bent over feeding and walking, the ground will keep them trimmed to a certain length just by the beard dragging on the ground. Some turkeys are born with longer legs, hence they will end up with longer beards!!!

Re: Prices for turkey mounts? That seems pretty high to me!! My Rio ended up costing me $530.00, and I thought that was on the high side!!

Re: New Turkey Gun Have fun with your new toy!!!

Re: Short Barrels...... They claim that a 26" barrel will get the most velocity out of your gun, as well as being better in the woods than the 30". Most turkey guns come with a 21" barrel, and have no problems with patterns. They are also much easier to manuver around in the woods compared to the longer bareled guns. That being said, if I had a choice, I'd go with the 24" and split the differences!!!

Re: Anyone have feedback on CHOKE TUBES? Take alook at this pattern target I shot while using the Rhino .660 choke and 3" Nitro hevishot loads out of my 1300. Before getting this combo two seasons ago, I tried the: Hastings, NU-Line, Winchester factory chokes, Kick's, and Tru-Glo choke tubes along with many brands of turkey loads. But I still ended up with a lot of holes in my pattern target at 40 yards. I just wished that I would of bought the Nitro/Rhino combo way back when and I would of saved a lot of money, time, and frustration. Expensive, yes, but well worth the investment in the long run if you ask me.

Re: 20 long beards...What a sight... Tim, that must of been a sight to see!!!

Re: Do you shoot 3\'s or 3.5\'s Winchester 1300 with 3" shells.

Re: Anyone have feedback on CHOKE TUBES? Comp-n-Choke and Kick's are both owned by the same company. Chuck Boswell is the owner. Never shot the Comp-n-choke, but I have heard nothing but good stuff about the Kick's. Personal preference plays a big part. I'm a Rhino man myself, go figure.

Just wanted to let some of you know, there is an easier way to carry your decoys than by just stuffing them into your vest. I almost pulled my arm out of it's socket while trying to reach around and yank a decoy out of my turkey vest a few years ago. Then I stumbled onto this niffty decoy bag put out by AW in the Midwest catalog. If you ever had to set-up quickly, this bag is a life saver. They come in different sizes for diferent brands of decoys, as well as having a couple of extra pockets for storing your decoy stakes, etc. I have to give them a two thumbs up!! Check out the Midwest catalog near the front!!
