I don't think so...but....I think I know for whom he could be a poster child... That video has been around for several years. It is a 600 nitro chambered Encore. If he would of held the thing right I believe it would be shootable. He's just supporting the weight with his weak hand....that's no way to hold a gun....any gun. Somewhere out there is a video of the guns owner (that aint him) shooting it and handling the recoil very well. If I can come across it I'll get it posted. hangunnr

You may want to shoot a thumbhole stocked rifle before purchasing one. It's kinda awkward working the bolt from the position your hand is in. Other than that the rifle has nice lines. hangunnr

Good deal there Jim!!! Nothing like buliding good relations with the locals. hangunnr

Weatherby Mark XXII, .17 HMR, FOR SALE !!
hangunnr replied to toddpipkin's topic in Rifles & Accessories
One of our local shops has one of these. They are a very nice rifle. Good luck with your sale. hangunnr -
Me too, I'm a little concerned about how the chamber was cut. I've never had one this tight before. Time will tell. hangunnr

Yeah, I'll get right on that.....LMAO... hangunnr

Welcome 3seasons!!! Glad to have you... hangunnr

"How does it shoot?" Don't know... hangunnr

This is one project I've wanted to do for years, and well it's taken a couple years to come to fruition... It was worth the wait... I set out with a Remington XP100R, had it rebarreled with a sweeeeet Krieger 1-12 twist 308 Win barrel. Had the muzzle threaded for a muzzle brake and a end cap to cover the threads when the brake isn't in use. There may well be a supressor for this rifle at some point in the future. I then had the barreled pistol action fitted to a very nice Accurate Innovations walnut stock. These are premier grade stocks which sport a full length aluminum bedding block similar to what HS Precision uses. I was able to pick up a used Rem Model 7 bottom metal to comlpete the package. I had the rifle stock fitted by the smith that did the metal work as it was needing some of the bedding block removed. I just completed bedding on the pistol stock last night. It still needs paint but I haven't setteled on what coat it's gonna wear, maybe a camo dip.... The mount is by Ken Farrell the rings are Warne QD and the optics a Leupold VXII 4-12. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this weekend so the barrel break in can start. hangunnr

Haven't heard any positives or negatives. I would be leary of the 1/8 MOA adjustments and the 1" main tube. There won't be much adjustment available. hangunnr

How are you gonna use the rifle the majority of the time? If it's gonna be a dedicated LR rifle then the canted base. As stated earlier this will hinder you at shorter ranges. When I purchased the mount for my 300WM I went with a 0-MOA base. The Leupold I use has a very generous 90MOA of internal adjustment. I really didn't figure that I'd be shooting serious long range all that often so the flat base was in order. It all breaks down to where you'll be spending the most of your time with the rifle....close to medium distance or way out there. I know, I didn't directly answer your question..... hangunnr

huntinguide, Here's the chart I was trying to post up the other day. 175gr-.308 dia bullet at 3000fps with a 100yd zero. Pay attention to the Drop in MOA and the Drop in inches coulmn. As you can see there is about -294.6" of drop at 1000 with this load. This translates to -28.1MOA. Now, If you have a mount that adds 20MOA which translates to 209.4", you will still need to account for the additional 85.2 inches of drop. If you break that 85.2" of drop down that translates to about 8.5" at 100yds. Assuming your scope has 1/4moa per click adjustments this'll mean you will have to come up about 34 clicks to hold dead on at 1000yds. Having a good quality scope with accurate adjustments for repeatable movements is crucial. This kind of adjustment is what seperates the men from the boys in the optics field. Here's a link to a pretty good ballistics calculator. This one allows you to plug in different conditions that can effect bullet flight. I've used this and found the numbers to be pretty close. http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/traj/traj.html hangunnr

That's good that you got her to try it. The M&P is a very easy gun to shoot. I have one as my daily carry piece. Now you have to get her one of her own..... hangunnr

Concerns such as this should be handled via PM. Thread locked! hangunnr

Tru Dat!!! My dad had a 1903 Springfield when I was a kid that was brutal. Even knowing what I know now about handling recoil I wouldn't own one in stock military form... hangunnr

Absolutely, there's no way you can replicate exactly the same hold a mechanical rest imparts. Do you use sandbags when hunting or just shooting off the bench? Tell me you don't go hunting without shooting from field positions.... I sight my guns exactly how they'll be used in the field, be it freehand, bipod or shooting stix... hangunnr

I'm assuming you're talking about the 300WM...yes? Here's a drop chart showing the amount of drop a 175gr bullet at 3000fps will have out to 1000yds. This'll give you an idea how much adjustment you'd need. The other factor will be how much elevation adjustment your scope has. Ideally you want the cross hairs optically centered.....meaning centered between the up and down travel within the scope. The idea of a canted rail is to keep from bottoming out the adjustments, but I bet you already knew that. For whatever reason I couldn't get the drop chart to show correctly.... There's about 295" of drop from a 100yd zero. If you went with the 20MOA base you'd still need about 85" of adjustment from your scope to be able to hold dead on at that distance. That translates to 8.5" of adjustment at 100yds. If your scope dosent have that much travel you won't reach 1000yds without holdover. I don't know the Nikon product line so I can't be of any help there. You need to know how much travel your scope has. If I'm wrong on my numbers would someone please advise... Putting a canted base on will hinder you at close ranges. If you intend to use this rig as a dedicated LR rifle than a 15-20MOA might make sense, but for a average range rifle I wouldn't recommend it. FWIW I have a 0-MOA base on my 300WM and had no issues reaching 600yds with a Leupold 8.5X25 LRT scope I still had plenty of adjustment left........BUT my cross hairs aren't optically centered. hangunnr

My experience with machine rests both rifle and pistol is that they're good for telling you just one thing, and that's how your gun will shoot from a machine rest and that's all. Once you interject the human element into the firing equation all the time in a machine rest goes right out the window. Now this contraption.... It allows the shooter to strap his gun in and push a button to trip the trigger. What exactly is it that the shooter learns from this? I'll save you the time of replying....nothing! I've never seen a gun that shot well out of a true machine rest (which this isn't) shoot close to the same point of impact once the stock or grips were put back on and shot by hand. I've still got a couple match grade .45s that won't hold 4" at 50 yds out of a Ransom mechanical rest but will pile the same load into 1.5" when shot by hand. The harmonic differences between the two methods is substantial. Now, if you have a gun that hurts too much to shoot off the bench..... well that's pretty simple, either learn a better technique or get a lighter recoiling gun. hangunnr

With your handloads are you able to seat the bullet out far enough to touch the lands? I realize that in doing so the cartridge may exceed the magazine length but the reason I ask is because in my VS 308 I can't come anywhere close to touching the lands. I wondered if that was a common trait with the VS guns. hangunnr
-
It'll be interesting to see if this 308 will be able to run with the Win Mag at extended ranges, accuracy wise. If nothing else with the EFR scope it'll be a killer short range hole puncher. hangunnr

Only if you are closed minded enough to not be able to question your own values IMO.... hangunnr

As are my AR's......but that's only because I can't get them to go any higher... hangunnr

A good and very simple question. Apples to apples. I w:rolleyes:nder why it's so hard for some to rationalize? Hypocrisy is often a hard pill to swallow. hangunnr

Yep it sure does...... hangunnr

The base is a Ken Farrell short action Remington 0-MOA. http://www.kenfarrell.com/REM-7S-1-0.html The rings are Warne Maxima 1" low matte. I had a couple sets of the rings here so I stuck an extra up front. It's likely not necessary but as long as I had an extra I figured it might as well ride the gun. This is a rock solid setup. hangunnr
